9.5 -- a bit slow in spots near the beginning. For those of us into the strange and original, this is a winner. I am not sure what I expected, but not this. And yet, I loved the story. Why are the Koreans so much better at film-making? Is it the Kimchi? Shim Eun Soo is great, as is Kang Dong Won. One of those movies that I will be looking forward to viewing again.
I am deeply in love with Han Hyo Joo. It's okay. I'm not a stalker. She and So Ji Sub are very good in this, but the plot is made into a movie one hundred times a year, around the world. It is in a folder in a desk drawer of every producer, waiting to be pulled out (again) when there is nothing original to bring to the screen, but they want to give work to some of their regulars. I gave it seven stars because of Han Hyo Joo. Did I mention that I am in love with her?
This movie reminded me of my wife -- a strong woman who placed the needs of other before her own. Wonderful acting, but especially from Rie Miyazawa and Hana Sugisaki.
I almost did not make it through the first episode. By the middle of the third, I was hooked. In some ways, this is a documentary about corporate life -- office politics, sexual harassment, slackers taking credit for the work of others, near-constant stress, and more. No wonder people want to become college professors and only work four hours a week.
Oh My Ghostess is one of those dramas that I hated to see end. There have been others that I thought had superior writing, directing, and acting, and yet, when they ended, I would say to myself, "That was really good. What should I watch next?" Oh My Ghostess, like Reply 1988 and My Father Is Strange, had me go into a form of depression because I wanted it to continue. Starting as a comedy, it morphed into a romance, then into a thriller, finally back into a romance.
Park Bo Young is amazing. Not a great beauty, her 'cuteness' wins me over every time. Actually, as she showed in films like A Werewolf Boy, her pure talent wins me over even when there is no 'cuteness' involved.
Like others, I found it a challenge to like the Na Bang Soon character in the first half of the drama, rooting for the return of Shin Soon Ae, but that changed later on as she opened up.
I was hoping that 'Chef' would tell Shin Soon Ae that he loved her, just before she passed over. I doubt that Na Bang Soon would have resented it.
I feel sorry for those viewers who gave up on this too early.
I loved this movie. I admit that I wondered why he didn't look for a big branch to use as a floating device to escape, but was willing to overlook that due to the richness of the rest of the story. I am surprised that the rating is not higher.
Taken in its entirety, I enjoyed this comedy very much, but I have to say that Jung In Sun gave a demonstration in sleep-walking through the entire production. Sun Seung Won has very little talent and should look into finding a new career. Everyone else, including the writer and director, did a great job. The baby may be the cutest I have ever seen in a movie or tv production.
The problem I have always had with Asian comedy (including Bollywood) is that the actors almost always over-act, in an effort to convince you that they are being funny. Lee Yi Kyung comes close in this, but without quite stepping over the line. The situations here are funny. The actors just have to have energy in playing their parts, and they all pull that off beautifully. I will be looking into other work by writer Kim Ki Ho and director Lee Chang Min. They had me laughing out loud. That rarely happens. Bravo!
I did not think that a drama with such a large ensemble cast would hold my interest, but I am a sucker for themes of duty and honor, especially when told so well -- great writing. I hope that it is not true that police in Korea are so readily punished for doing the right thing. If so, they must have a serious recruitment problem.
When Lee Yoo Ri, my favorite actor in the world, threw out her "husband's" record collection and video collection, I decided that I did not need to watch any more of such a selfish character. While many people seem to think that Lee Re is cute, I find her annoying. The clownish overacting of many of the secondary characters was also annoying. The sound effects stink. When a drama is so bad that even Lee Yoo Ri can't save it, then there is no point in continuing to suffer through it.
