S-L-O-W I watched most of this at 1.25.speed. Much of it at 2.0. A little bit at 1.0. Many repetitive scenes. Lots of slow dialogue. If it had been compressed into 20 episodes it would have been much better.
The great Buster Keaton used to be called 'The Great Stoneface.' Jang Ki Yang was much like that in this drama. I was surprised, because I liked him in supporting roles I have seen him in. Perhaps he was simply following the director's orders.
Jin Ki Joo -- I would love to spend a weekend kissing those lips. What a great smile. I would not dare say anything negative about her.
Heo Joon Ho dominated every scene he was in. What an evil character he portrayed.
It is a shame that the drama had to be so S-L-O-W.
Most of the way through, I thought that this was the sweetest movie that I had ever seen. I expected a happy ending. Alas, it turned into a tear-jerker at the end. I still give it a 9.0, due to that minor disappointment. The cinematography was wonderful -- as important to the story as the music was to The Beauty Inside. It makes me sad that it took me fifteen years to find it.
Wow, the first movieI've ever dropped. I don't understand why so many people liked it. She was a horrible human…
wravyn -- I just noticed your message after posting one of my own. Since you watched enough of the movie to get the idea, just skip to the last twenty minutes and see if you have the same reaction that I did.
I have never understood why this movie has such a strong following. To me, the 'Sassy Girl' character is extremely annoying. However, the last twenty minutes saved it. When I talk to people about it, I suggest that they skip everything before that.
As others have mentioned, this reminds one of Signal. It held my attention throughout. I hate it when I start to get bored, and my mind wanders. Three of my favorite actors in the leads. I almost got confused about the ending, but I put the pieces together after a moment's pause. For anyone not sure, look to Emylan's post below.
With some movies, you can be very passive and not pay careful attention. If you do that with Hwayi: A Monster Boy, you won't be able to put all the pieces together properly. It is worth the effort.
I guess that I am missing something. After the fifth episode, I decided that I could not go on much longer. I found it boring. I jumped to the finale, which went about as I expected. I did enjoy watching Lee Bo Young, but not enough to sit through any more of this.
Really enjoyed Flying Colors. The problem was with the subtitles. I could find two types -- bad and awful. Of course, I settled on bad. I know that there are Japanese who speak English very well. I see them on the financial channels. Maybe they could do part-time work for the movie industry.
I fail to understand the high average rating. There was not a single person in this whom I would ever want to have contact with. Not one student, parent, or teacher. I felt that way from the first minute. Moriguchi Yoko was okay, but that was only in the flashbacks. The pace was numbingly slow. Why would anyone want to wallow in this morass? "Different strokes for different folks," I suppose.
While very touching, I feel that the plot could have been fleshed out more. With more careful editing, the movie would have been 50 minutes long, without losing anything. I fast-forwarded quite a bit, but still had tears at the end.
Woah am I the only person who dropped this drama? I watched 2 episodes but I just can't continue. Don't get me…
GreyWarden97 -- I feel your pain. I am only in ep. 2, but I am wondering why it is rated so highly. Much of the acting is more Bollywood(silly) than Korea(realistic).
I watched this on Kissasian. It was translated by Nami (whoever that is). Nami does not speak English very well, so at times it was difficult to follow what was going on. I gave it a 7. If not for Nami, it might have been an 8. I have long been a fan of Uhm Jung Hwa, until she did that horrible "You Are Too Much."
I had some serious problems with this. Even Lee Sun Kyun, who is great is so many things could not do anything to save the awkward part he was given. Ryu Seung Ryong was awful. Im Soo Jung was very good. The story sucked. The husband was married to a woman who would not shut up and would not listen to others. I have a relative who is married to a woman like that. My relative is miserable, and nobody likes his wife. In this, the husband should be happy to get rid of her, but viewers know from the jump that he will end up wanting her back. No surprises here. Two hours lost.
I just watched the first episode and hated it. So Ji Sub, whom I usually like, seemed to be 'phoning in' his performance. Gong Hyo Jin will never be my favorite actress. I get the feeling that they were just showing us the rehearsal run-through. I will try episode 2 due to all the great reviews, but I have a feeling that this is not going to be as good as 'Gone With The Wind.' haha
I don't believe that a better movie has ever been made. This is one of the greats. I value stores about honor and responsibility. This is a two-hour movie that seems like four hours just because so much happens. Acting, writing, directing, overall production -- all of the highest quality.
I am a fan of Jung Jae Young, so I want to give this a high rating, but it is supposed to be a comedy, and I only chuckled once. Why was a 'dead' person driving the bus? There was little tension and few laughs. 5.5
If anyone knows the name of the artist who painted the pictures for the film, please let us know his/her name. It is probably in the credits, but I don't read Korean.
I recommended this to my daughter. After watching it she called me in tears. It is a great film.
This is another of those movies that I feel had not been rated highly enough by the MDL population. The scene of an understandably upset Jo Min Soo in the bathroom is worth the price of admission. Women in their 40's have sex lives. Who knew? I thought that movies only dealt with teenage obsessions.
There have been times that I have watched a movie, or drama, that is very highly rated by the MDL audience, but found that I was very disappointed. "Different strokes for different folks" -- right? "Pieta" is just the opposite. I thought that the average would be much higher. It is probably the darkest movie I have ever seen, even more so than "I Saw The Devil" or "Seven." That, by itself, is not a reason to watch a movie, but I found "Pieta" to be captivating. I have not seen Jo Min So in a lot of movies (yet), but she always seems to draw my eye. I even bought a DVD copy, in case it should prove difficult to stream at some point in the future. I tend to re-watch happy movies more often than dark ones like this, but I still believe that it is a superior film. 10
Why is this so highly rated? The writing and acting is cartoonish (Yes, I know it's based on manga). It could be re-edited to less than half its length. If "Poochai" is employed in the Blue House, why does he spend so little time there? What is he being paid for? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
