I am actually quite upset on how the last scene is portrayed by few users in social medias. The posts said that XSH took poison to take revenge on behalf of his brother's death. To make DZA experience the pain of how it feels when your beloved dies before your eyes. But i think people are seriously misunderstanding the whole context.
XSH if he wanted revenge he could have done it the moment he saw his brother died but he let DZA go. Because he loved him but he hated the fact that he deceived the trust XSH gave to DZA. But it costed him his life and morality. Driven by obsession to have his lover by his side he overturned the whole kingdom. He was righteous to a certain point that he spared the lives of the people of South Hui.
But his long driven obsession hit a point when he noticed that XSH is not like before. XSH is ready to die anytime. As y'all saw he wanted to kill himself because he thought it was better to die than to surrender to his enemies. Which is why DZA thought that he hated him although DZA loved XSH much much more than before. XSH didn't hate DZA but he regretted the fact the he was naive and got easily deceived. you can clearly see he mentions it. Now he was willing to fight till he got to know that DZA is sick. He was given poison because he was not loyal to Red Shadow Guard and because his love for XSH was greater than his own life. Well few were loyal but how many? many of them knew the fact that the king is nothing but weak and irresponsible. That was his salvation to the countless wrong decision he took, his greed for freedom and love, Death. He lost everything but DZA who has few days to live. I read this line somewhere here or in insta/yt that XSH tells SS that he can say that XSH is despicable for abandoning his duties and morals but he truly loved DZA. So a life without people you love is equal to living in hell. That's why he chose poison over life. A peaceful destiny where they could be ever after, eternally.

i agree 😭😭 only if they could get some more funds the court politics part would be elaborated. it was rushed in only 6-7 eps. especially i would love to see the Prime Minister having more screentime because he was a cunning man. He wanted power for himself. Crown Prince was always suspicious of him that's why he deliberately misleaded him leading to his demise yet we never got to see what happened to the court ministers after XSQ died

What's wrong with dying with dignity? DZA didn't have much time left. do you think he would survive on his own? The king favored XSH and called crown prince weak on the top the Prime Minister made it look like XSQ killed the Duan Family. It's all court politics. When you come to power, anything that threatens your position become a danger including XSH and the emperor. XSQ loved XSH as long as he was not a threat but he thought if he tortured XSH may be he would retreat. May be he would understand that XSQ doesn't want XSH in imperial court. but unfortunately it backfired. why I am telling you abt this because even though he was wrong, he was righteous as a brother/master. He killed the man who tortured his brother and led troops to find the rare herb for the servant. He was not bad but he was blinded by greedy and power. He was waiting because he adored his little brother. He never wanted to kill him but he was very much manipulated by the Ministers. It's a prime example of how imperial poltics worked behind the scenes.

my interpretation is a bit different tho. i think Shu He loved his brother as much as he loved Duan. Both had separate place in Shu He's life. but knowing the danger within the imperial court Shu He knew it was hard to avoid Su Qian. all he wanted was someone to trust and some peace but both his brother and Duan broke his trust. That's why he was willing to take upon death when he faced his brother.
Destiny outplayed them ofc. i think a part of Shu He knew that Duan didn't do it on purpose but he betrayed the trust and killed his beloved brother none the less so he had to take the throne he hated so much. this lead him to despise Duan even more. He didn't want revenge but when obsession grew and his kingdom got destroyed he had nothing. He knew he can't find peace in the golden cage Duan made and Duan's days are numbered so what's the use of living in misery when you can get together in afterlife. that's why ig he wanted to die. out of guilt that probably because of him his brother is not anymore. it's my speculation tho 🤗🤗
