It was a close-knitted plot by the Emperor. How, where and when would he tell her? She would never act that desperate is she knew about the plan. Her reaction was necessary to make other believe that there's a rift between emperor and GTY. Empress Dowager had spies everywhere even in prisons, there's no way GTY would risk the plan. Ming Lan understood the responsibilities her husband had and there's a distinction between formal and personal affairs. This arc also proves her affection and feelings towards GTY which was I believe was like icing on cake for her formidable character.
Some people complain about why Taohua doesn't just tell the truth. Even in the novel Taohua never say anything…
The difference between her revealing the truth by her own accord and him finding through other sources is the crux of the progression that people are expecting. The second point is that the plot should not turn the ML whose entire 2nd arc is going after the FL who is reluctant to reveal her plans. The common sense for a character of his stature and personality should be doing his plans and let her do hers. And of course some of recent event are absolutely deviating from centralizing plot.
It would be refreshing if ml can just move on and focus on his tasks. If jth wants to reveal she will. All this cat n mouse is just degrading their character.

Typical Fl reaction lol. Most of the dramas lose their characterization by beginning of 2nd half. Now the writers have to find a way to fill up plots or shrink existing ones based on no of eps left. Here everything is lost.
GTY's stepmother forced in a concubine after their marriage which Ming Lan accepted as well. ML always complied with the social the norms even if she personally does not prefer them. That's a bit different from FL's who act recklessly just to get saved in by the ML.
Good point with censorships. Although a lot of this comes down to younger audiences who can perceive these historical plots from modern perspective and they expect everyone to be green-green. Even this show currently, ML being labelled red flag in earlier episodes is ignorant of the plot and setting. Maybe people watch for sake of actors rather than the plot. I've yet to watch a drama of even closer quality to that of story of ming lan or NiF.
It would be a real character development if she comes clean voluntarily. But can we really expect this from these kind of dramas?
