So I don’t usually have favorite celebrities, and if I do, I will simply watch more of their shows, but I don’t really go beyond that, and rarely look up or read about their private lives. I don’t think it’s because I'm jumping on the bandwagon, but I feel that something is wrong when people put these unrelated celebs on a pedestal, and worship them as gods despite all the evidence to the contrary of their on-screen persona.
I believe that we don’t even know everything about those people closest to us. I have a partner whom I trust wholeheartedly. But if one day, the police comes knocking at my door and tells me he’s under arrest for suspicion of trafficking. You bet I will be shocked. That’s a normal, human response. But after that initial reaction settles, I would still put my trust in him. That’s the foundation of our relationship.
So that’s what I think KSH supporters are feeling right now. Because of their attachment, or imagined relationship with their fave actor/actress, it’s pretty hard to shake off their faith in that person. They are confident in their judgment of character. Who would want to be proven wrong? Certainly, nobody seeks this, especially those who are resolute in their convictions.
It’s easier for those of us who are more detached from the whole drama, to be more discerning because we have less at stake. For example, if the cops had gone to my neighbor’s house, knocked on their door, and said the same thing, I would be more inclined to believe the police.
Why? Because, though we may know and be chummy with each other, they’re still unrelated to me. So the same goes for this situation. It’s not that these supporters are “blind,” or “dumb,” or “disgusting,” or “evil,” it’s because the world that they know has been turned upside down. So it’s understandable that they become disoriented and feel lost upon the discovery of their beloved idol, who can do something so depraved and unacceptable to others. So they try to cling to that sliver of hope that KSH retains some type of humanity, like donating to the wildfire efforts. Because they do not want him to be branded as “pure evil,” but maybe someone who has just lost a part of their morality because of the industry that he is in.
It’s like how when people become surprised that their idols turn to drugs to relieve the pressure placed upon them by their management, the public or even by themselves, to do better, to aim higher, to make more money, to become more attractive, or whatever new set of standards that apply. They are only human reacting to the nature of the beast that is K-ent. If their adulation gets shattered, what else can they cling to? Unless they have more figures in their shrine, they will have no other option but to be insistent in this person’s absolution.
So the lesson here is really, that we have to be more flexible and less stringent in our own beliefs. I’m not saying to fully discard them, because we each have our own idea of where we stand in the moral spectrum. And just like there is not just one country, or one race, or one culture, that we have to accept that there are differences in thoughts and ideology, and that’s okay.
It’s nice and all to be a staunch believer in what we think it’s right, but just be open to the possibility that we can be wrong.
