as someone not from China, i found this surprising.
After all, are these shows also not offering audiences an escape from their mundane realities? Also, I would never have watched costume or for that matter any chinese dramas nor formed a positive opinion on the country and its people sans the massive popularity of chinese shows outside china as in so many ways that was the window for me to have an idea of, know about, learn about chinese way of life and its culture--whether ancient or modern.
of course, such a step or statement will not come out of thin air--there must be reason to it and one i can think of is distortion of chinese history as it is depicted in dramas (of which I am as an outsider, at best illiterate). however, I hope the authorities also remember that art and reality are not 100% the same. One does take liberties in art that is known as creative liberty, and without being utterly disrespectful or blasphemous to the culture and history, if a show or its portrayal do tweak appearances a bit, i don't see how that can be an issue.

and yes, I loved Pursuit of Jade. I loved ZLH on screen--he was a visual delight but so was his performance (absolutely wonderful) as I did TXW. She was pretty and stunning in her action. Of course, it was evident actors put on make up but they looked lovely. I loved the characterisation and their healthy relationship and in fact, these aspects made me respect Chinese values. I wouldn't lie, PoJ was the first Chinese period/costume drama i watched--i had only watched modern c dramas since starting to watch c dramas about a year ago. And PoJ changed my perspective on such period/martial arts dramas. I am now watching The Prisoner of Beauty with Liu Yunning and I am so liking it--strong women in such shows inadvertantly made me respect chinese culture of women being vocal and almost equal in society.

Anyway, I hope matters are addressed in a way that keeps chinese values and chinese history intact and at the same time continues to enamour audiences both within china and abroad.

this is so similar to what i felt too--even the ML's confession to her is so toned down that one may almost miss it--but in life--it doesn't have to be the grand confessions they show on dramas.
in fact, all the dates the FL went in reminded me of different rom com k dramas.
this was a really good show--i would have liked to see more of the leads' relationship developing but i am not unhappy with what i saw.
the review was really good.

Review Good Boy
on ep 5of the show, when I am almost ready to drop the show, I can understand your review well.
the Drugmon character is interesting but them bringing her right inside their SCIT office is hard to digest and even on ep4 despite things moving on expected (read predictable)lines i kept watching because of the great actors--but by end of ep 5 I don't think I am sure about watching the show further. I am turning into a fan of Park Bo-Gum as an actor and I love Lee Sang-Yi too (esp after Bloodhounds). But the writing of this show really seems to pull back the actors.
