They were each other's first love in Joseon era and last love in present day. They were always destined to be…
It's beautiful that they were able to fulfil the promise to each other after 300 years, and finally belong to each other body and soul π
I almost cried when Shin Yu took Hong Jo to the ocean to propose, so that he could "ask" her dad for permission first! that was sooo sweet π₯Ήπ€§π₯²
And they even foreshadowed SY and HJ happily growing old together - when that elderly couple walked past SY on the park bench.
But ... a teeny part of me wanted the show to explore their epic past love & present connection more (instead of wasting screentime on NY and the gardener).
Ah well, I'm just an armchair director/screenwriter grumbling from the back seat ... π
Looking forward to Rowoon and Bo Ah's next shows, whether separately or together!
Time to say goodbye to our π¦πΆ giraffe x bear π» couple? Say it ain't so!In the end, we were left with…
As others here have said, the spells and curses were largely forgotten after the initial shenanigans (which were admittedly hilarious).
Shin Yu's curse evaporated after that near-death experience, and the fated love aspect took over the initial "love spell" ... that maybe did or didn't work. Then (aside from the potted plant) zilch until the gardener suddenly drags Hong Jo to his lair with the creepy altar and started babbling about red strings and such.
As viewers, you'd be tempted to think that none of Hong Jo's "spells" ever actually worked! In fact, the Creepy Gardener's black magic seemed to be more effective ... and in the end, even Shaman Grandma Eun Wol was shown as getting it (very) wrong sometimes!
For me, since they started off with spells & curses, it would've made more sense if the villain was tied to Aengcho's past life & shamanic powers, but the gardener only had a peripheral past connection with her (that we were shown, anyway) and it felt kind of randomly shoehorned in (Hong Jo, girl, you're not a dumb character, so WHY would you volunteer yourself as bait without telling Shin Yu or even Jae Kyung beforehand?!)
It took away from the significance of SY & HJ's past life connection a bit, since the main purpose of their past lives backstory was simply to show that their love was strong enough to overcome a 300-year separation, and special enough that they BOTH remembered their past love life. Well and good. But WHY?? What made their love so special? Okay, okay, I'll stop being over-analytical.
Btw, I can't remember - was it Shin Yu who found the wooden box that Mujin buried? Or was it just something unearthed during the demolition of the shrine?
How come Na Yeon continued being a colossal b*tch taking up screentime until the very end, but didn't even get the benefit of a past life cameo (unlike Creepy Gardener)?
I'm glad that my man Jae Kyung stayed classy till the end π. I just wanted a scene of him finding his special lady! (they could've cut a few Na Yeon scenes to give us hints for a HEA for Advisor Kwon π¦¦. Just sayin.)
Time to say goodbye to our π¦πΆ giraffe x bear π» couple? Say it ain't so!
In the end, we were left with lots of warm fuzzy feels, but explanations? not so much.
I'd still give it a high rating for the memorable couple and their chemistry (although our office couple Ma + Gong had some sparks going too, bless 'em! π)
Shin Yu x Hong Jo are one of my favourite discoveries this year - their ridiculously cute flirty bantering just made me smile and wriggle and hit things!!
Rowoon perfectly embodied Jang Shin Yu in all moods and aspects! It was refreshing to see a ML who unashamedly and verbally expresses his vulnerability and love for the FL at the drop of a hat!
Yeees. He started out annoying and ended up amazing. I wish more SML's were level-headed like his character was.…
Kwon Jae Kyung had a total last minute hotness explosion - those writers were absolutely messing with me!! π€£π€£
I was rooting for him from the get go, so I wanted his ending to be more wrapped-up-with-a-ribbon-on-top ππ, just for my own closure ... But failing that, I'll accept a cameo appearance in Rowoon or Bo Ah's next drama!! π
I think the 3rd person who remembers the past life was Shaman herself. KJK redeem himself by supporting SY and…
yes, makes sense. Even if their relationship dynamics aren't exactly the same anymore, we still have the lingering connections from past lives. our selves
And after all, that's the point of reincarnation, right, so that we can redeem and improve ourselves through our efforts and choices, and build good karma (although it's a bit dubious as to why scum like the gardener are allowed to reincarnate in the first place π )
βHow do I wait until then? I miss you whenever I blinkβ. I donβt know who is the cheesiest version of SY.…
tbh, I don't think there was much difference between the two π. And I think that's what we were supposed to see - that his love and their connection was true and unchanging with or without the spell π₯°
Although I liked how they made Mu Jin a warrior, but made Shin Yu a guy who's scared of heights and such - but is willing to wrestle octopuses for his love ππ€£
That has to be one of the sexiest cotton candy scenes that Iβve watched ππ±
definitely!! their chemistry is π₯π₯ even with a ball of fluff between their lips π
I was praying they wouldn't go the obvious route of a proposal under the cherry blossoms, and sure enough, they were my cute and naughty SY+HJ couple until the end!
An aside: I did find it amusing that they kept turning off the lights for sexy br time - is that a new thing in dramas or what?! Oh well, guess it's better than the "sinking out of camera view" or the "misty curtain" effect!! π
BWAHAHAHA, you said it in a nutshell!! So far, Mr Creepy Gardener wins the award for the Most Annoying Side Character…
* he (probably) killed his wife and buried her in one of his park projects, dug a huge pit and tried to bury Hong Jo in it, took lots of unauthorised photos & got hold of personal clothing, sent creepy flowers, pot plants and other items intended to intimidate / curse the receiver, stalked Hong Jo to her apartment and molested her, stabbed Shin Yu ... and STILL the police can't pin him with anything???!! WTH?!! How hard can it be to catch one gardener?!
* I'm still waiting for Na Yeon's villainous past life reveal. And her public exposure as Hong Jo's bully and tormentor. Never mind spells and curses - I need justice for Hong Jo before this show ends, so that she can stand proudly in front of her co-workers and Shin Yu's parents and be appreciated for who she is.
besides the obligatory pining & separation period, I understand why HJ had to take some time out, since it all…
after all, the Creepy Gardener stalked & molested her, Shin Yu got stabbed in his own apartment building, and she just watched him flatlining several times before her very eyes (btw, I still don't get how the ER can have such a window where outside people can see everything going on inside!!)
She's also guilt-ridden towards his worried parents, so I totally get that she feels like a "bad luck charm" to him, and that she thinks it's better to stay away from him. Shin Yu being unhappy is secondary to him being sick - or worse.
But looking at the end of Ep 14 & Ep 15 preview, I think I can look forward to a solid ending!!
I understood Hong Jo's point of view, that she didn't want Shin Yu to suffer whenever she was around, but I kind…
besides the obligatory pining & separation period, I understand why HJ had to take some time out, since it all happened so fast, and seemed to happen the moment she agreed to officially date him +
I actually don't like historical genre because it seems it always relates to palace politics. But they seem always…
@Cho Na & @Elif Kim - I agree with both of you!
The story could have benefited from a deeper dive into their past love story (which would have bolstered early support for their current relationship and defused the "two-timing" debate).
Instead, we got a whole lot of small fry Na Yeon and Creepy Gardener plus Mr Haum CEO taking up screen time, aargh!! It would make sense if we got some more insight into the past lives of Na Yeon & Haum CEO, if any.
I'd like some more explanation of how grandma shaman Eunwol knows so much about Aeng Cho & Mu Jin, if she's not a descendant of some kind . Or maybe she's just really good at her job!
I'm not too bothered by the comparison between Aeng Cho/Mu Jin and Hong Jo/Shin Yu, since the former couple grew up together and knew the clear class barriers they were facing, whereas it takes Hong Jo & Shin Yu more time, as they're a new couple dealing with the messy nuances and distractions of modern society and workplace politics, and a world with no place for spells or curses!
I'm glad we got Eps 13 & 14 smoothed out quickly, and now, fingers crossed for a satisfying HEA!!!

Some remaining puzzles (with spoilers): +
I only wish Shin Yu had been around to hear the conversation, then he and Hong Jo could have had a spicy conversation of their own π
might go and try to find a YT highlights version ... for Jae Kyung, I'll try

I'm also seal clapping here π π¦ππ but I'm greedy - couldn't they spare 2 mins to give my man Jae Kyung a happy ending?
