I'm quite surprised people see a significant quality difference between S1 & 2. As someone who didn't find either super engaging, I'd say they're only marginally apart. Still a very unique concept.
I feel like the story was super convoluted given it's only 8 episodes. I see what they wanted to achieve, but the set-up wasn't fleshed out enough for it to mean anything for their present-day romance.
This was a super promising period drama, and it felt like everything was aligned. However, a specific writing/plot choice (I’ll comment on below) prematurely undercut the drama’s potential. Personally, I think it lowered the stakes and eliminated future tension farrrr too early.
I think the prospects of a second season greatly hampered their performance with the first season. An element of romance felt like the most natural progression but that didn't happen. I still enjoyed it, but I can’t in good faith give it a higher rating. I think the lead’s previous project, Military Prosecutor Doberman strikes a much better balance. I will eagerly anticipate S2.
This drama was not a melodrama it was a rom com so the main plot was the swooning which it delivered back and…
No shade, but your response seems to be a random throwaway comment that has no bearing on my original observations. Like, you’ve not engaged even 1 point I listed. You’ve actually started a parallel conversation with no links. So it may be better to have this as its own comment, as opposed to under mine… 😭
The Good Bad Mother actually had some of the most moving scenes of last year, with extremely emotive acting. However, outside of these sparse, poignant moments, much of the show felt painfully substandard. Like, I genuinely cannot believe that truly breath-holding scene in the front yard, with the mother's stunning line delivery, holds space with the final plot. I cannot fault the acting, particularly the leads, but even that could not remedy the final execution. The twins were an absolute treat though 🥹
Every day I'm on mdl, I question my concept of a slow burn—or maybe the shows in question are slow burns, but they’re just very poorly executed ones. Calling this boring would be too easy; it’s rudimentary. I also have to mention the filter/grading because it’s just that bad. The dials for such colouring need to be banished to a digital prison where no other filmmaker or editor can touch them.
I don't know exactly why, but this felt incredibly fragmented compared to S1. If they do consider furthering this series (which I don't think they should), I hope they consider how they can capture the essence of the initial show.
Conceptually, this show was really different, and on that alone, it has its merits. However, a fatsuit in 2024 is egregious. That aside, it was one of the better shows of the year, not that competition was stiff... Not better than Woo Hee's counterpart show from this year though. Amazing actress.
