This entry I created is for the mini-series, there is also a movie of the same name by the (same) creators coming out in 2019.
Scenes from this mini-series (with official English subtitles) can be found in the middle of this 3 minutes promo teaser trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqIvNNRYc6Q
The number of episodes for this series should be low for a C-drama, created at a total cost of around 120 million yuan. Primary shooting was completed in Nov 2017.
Can anyone simply tell me is this good drama with happy ending? I like chinese drama with less episodes. But most…
In most adaptations of this particular story, it has a mostly happy ending (for the leads). But this one hasn't finished airing yet... It you are interested, there's one upcoming Wuxia C-drama on my watch list that's only 30 episodes and has a happy ending...
Hi, may I know if the second and third seasons are of the same characters with first season or completely different…
This is one big complete story broken down into 3 seasons of filming to do the series justice. Most of the 50 of so important characters that appeared in the first season will appeared in at least 2 seasons and acted by the same cast.
As for English translation, in the past 6 years, at least 3 or 4 groups has tried and then gave up - the best they have achieved so far is less than 8% of the novel. The best translation I have seen so far is the one by Lannyland, since it has the flavor of the original but he stopped after only translating the prologue and the first chapter (about 0.1% of the full novel). The links are below: http://www.lannyland.com/night/vol1chap000.shtml (prologue) http://www.lannyland.com/night/vol1chap001.shtml Other translations I read so far are decent but less inspired (some even left out the prologue). Perhaps if the drama became the successful, there will be a more complete English translation of the novel ;
Thanks, Erudite for this! Interesting. I read this novel ages ago, so couldn't remember all the details of the…
The novel you have read ages ago would have been the abridged version. It is 2/3 the length of the original serialized version which was published exclusively on Ta Kung Pao, a newspaper based in Hong Kong in the early 1980s.
The drama adaptation is based on the superior serialized (original) version but incorporated a few appropriate plot changes where the novel version is found to improve on the original. The drama creators also outlined a few changes they made on the own for screen adaptation which I found to be quite reasonable.
According to those who have read both versions, using the original as a reference also established conclusively that the story timeline of FSOW took place before Baifa Monue Zhuan (The Bride with White Hair).
I'll believe this is airing when I'm watching the first episode somewhere and not a moment before. Plenty of shows…
Two episodes have been released on March 2nd officially by Tencent QQLive - their VIP members got another 6 more episodes in advance for viewing, for a total of 8.
Filmed on the actual Wudang mountains and other locations found in the novel, Liang Yu Sheng's last classic work has finally being brought to the screen after a 35 years wait. Due to the number of martial action scenes involved, it took 5 months to complete the shooting of 30 episodes.
This is ML Yu Levi first major work, but he seemed a superb choice as he has both the physical skills for performing the action scenes required as well as the appearance and attributes of the protagonist in book. Because of how the system work, I can only submit his profile for a new person after I have created this new drama entry. He should appeared in the cast and credits shortly. The rest of the cast is pretty solid but perhaps not so recognizable by audience outside China.
While completed, there is no trailer for this drama yet, so I just put up some photos here: https://kisskh.at/27915-first-sword-of-wudang/photos BTW, the golden eagle you see in a photo above is a real life hunting predatory bird, not CGI.
Yes, every novel to screen adaptations of Jin Yong's classics need to be treated as separate products. I, however,…
What disappointed me with this version is the creators have plenty of time to shoot this (149 days for 37 episodes) and sufficient funds - the cinematography, location sets and the use of appropriate ethnic costumes (as you yourself pointed out) demonstrated their willingness to spend on these areas but the screenplay and editing is questionable. Just take this sketch in the 1st episode as an example:
Dad: Our people are being slaughter by stealth! Post extra sentries and lockdown the compound! Son (unconcerned): I just got ambushed on my way back but now the two of us are going out alone to do some unnecessary animal hunting at night. Dad (unconcerned): Ok, just go ahead...
As for casting, I don't discriminate people on whether they are idol or not, but they should be appropriate for their roles. https://kisskh.at/27512-scent-of-incense-sword-rain which is released almost the same time also featured a group of new young actors/actresses but I feel the casting is better.
This would be more enjoyable if one has never seen a different version before or treat it as a entire new story ;) While this became a rather expensive spectacle to give exposure to a group of new actors and actresses, this new series is not without some merits - so I will watch a bit more before deciding. I have identified a few support actors in the cast, but currently not feel worth my time to create new personal profiles for the young leads.
Apparently March 2 is the new date but still no confirmation
The director has confirmed the date on Weibo and was congratulated by costars Elvis Han and Jeremy Tsui this morning. My guess is the recent success of his other drama https://kisskh.at/21475-the-legend-of-dogu has a hand in helping to secure a release date for this one.
According to actor Li Peiming who made an imposing 9th King of Qing Yang (as seen here https://kisskh.at/photos/RPPVx ) if everything go as planned, we will be able to watch this drama by March 2019 :)
BTW, his character Lv Baoyin is probably the person most responsible for instituting the tribes' tradition of killing all males on the losing side who are taller than horse's back as seen in TaE: Storm of Prophecy. In the Eagle Flag novel it is worse, since the reference is actually the horse' belly.
Is it good? Is it good? AHHHH!! I want to watch it but I just really want to know if it's good first. I just don't…
As you have watched https://kisskh.at/4269-legend-of-lu-zhen, I would said after watching the first 12 episodes that this one should be better. While seemingly fanciful, Dugu is more solidly based on real history, and covered several decades of the Dugu family and their in laws.
BTW the characters of Lu Zhen (she is from kingdom of Qi) and her king both have small roles in Legend of Dugu as the two stories intersected in history.
One of the two C-dramas to be released in 2018 that dealt with Empress Dugu. This one has a more reputable director while the other has a more seasoned cast.
PS: I just realized after viewing the first few episodes that this drama is more about the Dugu sisters collectively and not just the one who became the Empress.
After the first drama version starring Chow Yun Fat, this is 7th remake (alternative versions from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and even Singapore accounted for the first 6 remakes).
Non c'è di che :) BTW, I got conflicting counts from "insider" sources, which give number ranges from 24 to 60 episodes for Season 1 - so I still haven't filled in the episode count.

So far (after 24 episodes released) this is a pretty decent Wuxia drama.

The selling point for this version: it's from the director of https://kisskh.at/16087-sparrow and https://kisskh.at/6209-the-warring-states
