i find it bizarre that several Korean teachers have told you that “예뻐“ can’t be used for men, honestly. it absolutely can be but it isn’t usually the first choice (and like in English with “pretty”, for example, some men wouldn’t like it being said about them). and no, in this context it was that Kang Haneul said it to the host recently but he was talking about how it was difficult to act across from Siwan because he was so pretty in Misaeng which was released 12 years ago^^

that’s not true… even in an interview Siwan recently did, the host said that another actor, Kang Haneul, had reached out to her and said Siwan was too pretty/너무 예뻤어. Seol In Ah agreed, saying he was 잘생기고예뻤어 (pretty and handsome). it’s definitely not as common to call a man pretty but, honestly, maybe more common in Korea than in some other countries (because Korea has has had trends like Flower Boys, etc). and considering Siwan’s character also acts a little bit effeminately, it seems on point that he might call both women and men pretty if that’s what they are LOL

oh yeah, the soul switching genre i think can go either way. sometimes it’s a censorship thing and sometimes it’s supposed to genuinely just be a “love is of the soul/the person not the body” kind of thing LOL. even that trope has been around for ages but i find that harder to digest because for basically all of those, in the end the relationship is heterosexual. so it’s really hard for that to not feel like queerbaiting.

in shows like Disguise to You (i.e. where a character gets confused for the opposite sex), they can be poorly managed where at the VERY END all of a sudden the more masculine female lead suddenly has super long hair, uses heavy makeup and wears only dresses. i think this show will do well and end with the female lead keeping her more masculine original style, though!

just going to point out; not all men have a visible adam’s apple and, if we’re considering the societal context of this show, it’s worth knowing that it’s VERY common for Korean men to get laser facial hair removal. i would also imagine any woman posing as a man would be using a binder. wouldn’t it have been more likely that if when he touched her chest he thought it felt like she had breasts and that she might be a woman… that he would have reacted? like quickly backing off?

while the mention of Joan of Arc and the playing of the Amazon documentary COULD be an intentional character choice (i.e. Yun knows or at least suspects Kang is a girl), it could alternatively just be that they are “easter eggs” put in as a directive choice (i.e. a “joke” with the audience/viewers of the show because WE know).

The “gender bender” trope is pretty common, tbh, and has maintained some level of popularity since even before BLs became popular (Coffee Prince, To the Beautiful You, You’re Beautiful, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Love in the Moonlight, The King’s Affection, etc.). I think the “hidden identity” trope in general is just pretty loved :)

is he perceptive? sure. but he is paranoid and doesn't trust his own perception (e.g. when FL saw him staring at the vase and acknowledged that it had been turned; he said "so i'm not crazy" or similar and was relieved and excited). seems like he compulsively pays attention to how things CHANGE (which comes across like OCD or a PTSD/trauma response rather than intentional, inherent perceptiveness); the FL has only presented as a male in front of him so there has been no “change” for him to notice in that regard.

ML also doesn't seem to have many close personal relations; being perceptive of changes to your environment doesn't necessarily mean you are perceptive in every regard. ML appears to struggle with relationships so if he's going to misunderstand anything, wouldn't it be a person? beyond that, he is dealing with past trauma, being suspected of murdering someone, negative press and, during all of this, being set up to take over a company. i think, if it turns out that he doesn’t suspect that she is indeed a woman, it still makes sense. he has a lot going on.

and hell, if ML were to think the FL must be a woman because she is somewhat feminine…. well, isn’t the ML ALSO somewhat feminine? 🤭

honestly, i kind of disagree with this? there are definitely people i’ve met in real life who could have been either a man or a woman. while i might think they are more likely one than the other, if i had been introduced to them similar to how the male lead was introduced here (i.e. with the female lead applying for the position of a male bodyguard), i wouldn’t question it further.

also it doesn't seem like the male lead has strong personal connections to many/any people so while he notices a lot about his environment, that seems like something related to compulsion (e.g. OCD, trauma/PTSD, etc.). it doesn't inherently mean he can read people well. but frankly, even in episode 2, he is immensely relieved when the fl also notices that the vase has been turned and he says something like “so i’m not crazy”; seems like he doesn’t REALLY trust his own perception.

that aside, even if the female lead comes across as a little bit feminine for a guy, doesn’t the male lead come across as a little bit feminine for a guy, too? haha, i think, keeping all of these things in mind (as well as the fact that this is between being suspected of murder, being set to inherit/take over a company, dealing with past trauma, etc.), it makes sense that he wouldn’t be questioning her gender. he’s focusing on his sense of safety^^
