The core storyline and cases were interesting and relatable to our human nature, emotion, thoughts, values, beliefs,…
This is because the premise of the drama is the investigation process and not the prosecution/execution parts which involved prosecutor/lawyer. The drama was adamant from the start that they will only focus on the police side of the story which is the 2 main characters. That is why once they solved the case, when it is time to bring the cases to prosecutors, they no longer cover it since that is another long process and a whole different story. But I'm still appreciate it that they give us insight on what the punishment might be. Like the fraud case on the elderly, the most the criminals will get is 10 years max despite they caused the death by suicide of many victims through their deceptions. And we can see the most interesting part of it all where Shin Yi tried to take the matter into his hands by trying to get the criminal more time by confronting him face to face -- to have him stab him so the criminal's sentence will be a lot heavier which is attempting murder on police officer which unfortunately didnt go through as Du Cheng stopped him in the middle.
Regarding the tomboy girl, I thought it is close pretty neatly by having told us that they can know whether it is suicide by the way the knife position on the victims' body. We as the audiences knew she is telling the truth thus most likely she will found not guilty of murder.
You have to keep in mind the prosecution process will take months and years thus they cannot tell us the result of those people just after the cases are solved since it will look unnatural and didnt follow the flow of time intended in this story which is a couple of months from the time Shin Yi joined the police and until the case of 7 years from before are solved.
I usually dont watch Reality Shows but your article makes me interested to check out this one. Plus, its been sometime since I watch anything Japanese so this might be the time to dwell back in. :D
They were enemies in the real history. Thats why in the drama, all their brotherhood scenes are only done behind…
Yes, the Emperor is very admirable although sometimes I do feel he needs to be less merciful lol. But many viewers keep misunderstood his actions and keep calling him stupid -- I feel like many failed to see the wisdom in his actions on how he gave up small things but getting bigger things in return.
The description of ML in Marry Me isn’t so kind “arrogant, sly, sharp tongue” if that’s close to his real…
Actually if you watch the drama, its more to the lines of fun, funny, talkative & childish. The 'arrogance' is usually the façade all male leads in Cdramas likes to put on in the first few episodes.
I personally feel like 'misunderstanding' is just incompetency of writers in writing good stories. They have to…
Yes yes, when you watch enough dramas, you will get all that reference. Like 'Sayonara' in Japanese hold more weight that just a simple 'goodbye'. Or Saranghaeyo hold more weight than a Joahaeyo in Korean. Yes, stuffs like that :)

Not translated wrongly but the essence is lost when it is translated to English. Its like when you can understand the language, the translated version of the drama will never matched 100% if you understand the language . It is still correct, but probably only 80% unlike what the script intended in the first place. But the drama is still very hilarious. Its just when you understand the language, it is way way more hilarious.
The most obvious one is when one of the character called Fan Xian (the ML in JOL) Xiao Xian Xian. Its actually a double blow for him since Xian Xian (repeating one's last name) is actually a cute way to call someone (guys in general esp are embarrassed when called like this) and to add Xiao in the front which means 'Little' is another blow for him. But the subtitle only write Xian Xian which may make some viewers confuse on why Fan Xian is so bothered being call that way.

Joy of Life in particular is very hilarious script wise but many of the jokes lost in translation unfortunately. However, I do wish you still managed to catch all the brilliant jokes and enjoy the nuanced script. :D

Yes yes. Joy of Life only available at WeTV/Viki. Nirvana in Fire is also at WeTV. I subscribed to it since WeTV is a heaven for Cdramas lovers since they have basically have everything in HD. You can download it illegally but the picture quality is just not that nice so for high budgeted dramas like Joy of Life, its only appropriate to watch it in 4k since the details is everything. Plus, WeTV subscription fee is very cheap so its one of the streaming site beside iQiyi that I feel worth my money.

My all time favorite is Joy of Life & Nirvana in Fire. The only 2 dramas that I feel deserved the perfect title in term of script quality just like Secret Forest (Kdrama). I love smart and brilliant script and detail storytelling. And this 2 dramas fit the bills while being so interesting and entertaining. :D
Maybe it's because I'm still considered a rookie to Chinese costume dramas because I find the script ridiculous…
I personally feel like 'misunderstanding' is just incompetency of writers in writing good stories. They have to rely on 'misunderstanding' to move their plots which I find weak since most can be solve with talking instead of silence or fighting. Plus, misunderstanding is greatly connected to trust issues thus couple without 'trust' is just very problematic in general.
There are seriously many great Chinese costume dramas that didnt rely on this troupe so I hope you will find them and enjoy them at full glory. :D
I honestly find Mr Sunshine is just a pretty picture without substance and fall asleep while watching it on numerous times. The only reason I finished it because I watch it with my sister
I tried to watch The Untamed a few times , but could not get pass Ep 3. I don't why people loved it.
TBH, you need to give the drama a time. I watched it first because of its popularity and up until episode 10, I dont know why I watched it lol. Then after the drama really start, where the angst kicked in, then I understand all the hype. Its so so good.
Its the same for Ten Miles of Peach Blossom. The first 10 episodes was like ??!! then the angsty part comes in, now it has becomes my all time favorite love story. Its like since the later episodes are so great, people totally forgotten the first uninteresting episodes.
Crash Landing on you, I cant get pass episode 1 and I dont know why. Mouse, episode 1 and I already knew who is…
Seriously, I love Hyunbin but for the life of me I keep falling asleep while watching the drama. The only reason I finished the drama is because of Kim Junghyun since he is the only interesting character on the show for me.

No fact about 'being friend in secrecy'. Its all in the writers' creative imaginations. Thats the highlight of this whole things for me tbh. The brilliance of the writers in twisting the story of following the history while at the same telling a different story. Thats why they even managed to give us a happy ending despite following the exact same tragic ending for the Emperor and Empress in the real history.
Like in the history, the Emperor did gives his lands etc to Cao Cao but here, there are wisdom in his actions. So you see him as a hero instead of a weak king. But in the real history, he is indeed a weak king and the end of the Han family rule over China. Its hard to explain but you will appreciate this drama more if you know the real history and you will amazed on how the twists totally change your perspective on many things. :D
