I feel the same sometimes. And, yes, fantasy shouldn't get plagued with real world belief systems even though I'm not a fan of it. Honestly, I've been out of touch with romance genre as a whole for a long time so I think essentially I wouldn't be able to comprehend it as well. I gravitate towards more grey stuff for comfort. Also, I thought romance genre was thriving from afar. It was truly insightful to have this conservation with you. I feel like the root cause of the current muddled state of mind of creatives is micromanaging them to hell for increased profit margins. It has significantly contributed in ruining entertainment for us all. Gotta agree on that. Media has equally positive benefits as its downsides and more often than not most of us choose to ignore the former. Nowadays, all we see in the name of romance on tv is perpetual power struggle in relationships. Like, am I crazy for thinking that an ideal romance between a couple in a romance drama is one of selfless love, the courage to be vulnerable and willingness to stay together against all odds? And by this, I absolutely don't mean self-destructive love. It's been ages since I've seen a romance like this and also why I gave up on this genre alltogether.
