Glad someone said it. I thought I was the only one who had noticed how bad the subs were since no one was talking…
Maybe they just don't care about international viewers, considering that the Chinese audience itself is big enough to generate enough revenue for them... YouTube is probably just a side thing to them

I think it's all bots and machine translations, not humans. I do a lot of subtitle editing on Viki and this pattern of translation resembles the machine translations we get on some dramas.

As a set of performances, it's fun to watch. The stages are beautifully executed, and Hyolyn is on fire. As a competition, however, I hate it. At this point, it's not hard AT ALL to predict the winner. Just like the MAMAs and Music Bank(most of the time). It's like putting BTS or BP into a survival show with rookies. They already have experience and good fanbases. 10 years of being in the industry means 10 years of time to bring in fans and popularize your music. What's the point? No doubt Hyolyn is working hard and doing her best, and she IS doing an amazing job, but she is soooo much more experienced - literally more than a DECADE compared to Kep1er. She even has lots of survival show experience. Being solo has given her an advantage, not a disadvantage. No need for pondering over line distribution and parts when covering another group's song. And everyone looks at her in awe because she's a sunbae and participating solo.

I am not hating on Hyolyn as an artist in any way here. It's just that the competition is unfair. I'm the stupid one to expect more out of Mnet.

I agree a lot. They have the talent and also the idea was interesting...in my opinion what they lack is stage…
I agree they really need to relax. I feel like the pressure of their history and reputation as GFRIEND keeps burdening them

Title Fall in Love Spoiler
All of ML's soldiers, including his right hand man Tan Si. Also the actress and FL's father.
Oh i just remembered there are more 💀FL's stepmother, and FL's stepsister's biological father. Also SML's warlord father and his(father's) right hand man. I hope that's the entire death count 💀

Title Fall in Love
This has one of the best SML characters I've ever watched so far. I can ship the ML & FL soo badly, but still…
I wanted to slap him so many times but i guess it's not his fault he grew up pampered with a golden spoon

Title Fall in Love Spoiler
Does it have a happy ending it looks great but i don't want to watch a sad ending.
Its happy because the main leads get their happily ever after but it was a hollow happy ending for me because my favorite character died along with so many other soldiers, and they just wrap everything up by saying that all the survivors joined the CCP, happily ever after. Like wth i just couldn't be happy after all that bloodshed

This title seems realllly familiar.... isn't it the title of the drama the FL in Touch Your Heart wanted to act in so badly, and thats why she joins the law firm and all? I'm pretty sure the name is the same...

Title Don't Be Shy
The summary says the FL is a domineering female CEO? That's pretty rare. Usually this sort of role is only played…
The domineering CEO FL trope seems to be trending rn.... i remember seeing at least three other on air/recently finished dramas like this one

I didn't expect to like this one. I knew it was going to be outrageous and silly and long, and it was. It ranges from fluffy to extreme cringe to, well - downright illegal, but it's fun to watch with your brain turned off. I think its main charm is the actors. They're actually really good. Cliche dramas like this NEED good actors to sell the story, and this one does. They were stiff at first but it gets better.

I honestly didn't expect to get emotionally attached to it, but "Can I be your mayfly?" and that whole scene WRECKED me. The emotions, actions and dialogues were beautiful. It's like the writers were saving up on brain cells while writing the entire silly ploy just to use them for that scene.

This is such a well-thought-out article! 😍 It's so easy for things to get lost in translation 🥲

I didn't think Boys Over Flowers was a bad name, though... I thought of it as "I'd rather have the guy than the flowers(flattery/fake love)", which is pretty acceptable, IMO.
I've actually started to like the weirdness of drama titles. The silly/outrageous ones pique my interest, even though they can be misleading. It's funny to see how they try to adapt some idioms into equivalent English phrases. Though it IS sad to see a little of the cultural context go away. I've accepted the fact that I will just have to live at a disadvantage since I was the one who decided to watch dramas in a language I didn't know at all. However, I will always be thankful to the thoughtful translators who put in little notes explaining context, idioms and native phrases. I try to do that as much as possible, too.

I can't say anything about how to change a drama title since that's decided by the production company, but about subtitles.... isn't it acceptable to use a Korean word when there is no English equivalent (for words like aegyo)? I think it just helps people understand more about the culture, and the nuances behind the word. I didn't know much Korean when I learned what "aegyo" and "oppa" meant, but I slowly understood both the literal meaning and the cultural significance. I would have HATED to translate "oppa" to "brother" or just drop the honorific, because the entire significance of the word just vanishes. I think using native words is acceptable, as long as we put a little translator's note to go along with it for international viewers.

I won't really put my money on it. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Hyolyn...been following her since her…
Yes I love her stages tooo

Also yeah theres a lot of weightage for fans choice this time - both live and global, but again - most of them are there for Hyolyn. If you check the comments anywhere, its all "hope hyolyn wins" or "i came here for _____ but ohmygoodness Hyolyn was amazing i hope she wins!" So yeah she may be underrated if you compare her to Lisa or Taeyeon, but in that competition she's one of the (if not THE) most popular contestant

There's always this one person who HAS to read between the lines and come to their own conclusions 🙄 sure,…
I srsly have no idea when confidence was considered a disadvantage or an insult to anyone(arent most annoying FLs the tropey doormats?) but ok i guess you have a problem with confident women.

And thank you for giving me an A on that essay. I appreciate the feedback.
