I'm liking it so far (ep2) but what's up with the cheesy directing? The over-the-top close ups and shouting names…
This is a genre very typical of kdramas. Most recent kdramas have become more sophisticated, but this one has a certain old-kdrama charm. Everything is over-the-top and made for comedy. You have to take everything with a grain of salt and not think too much.
It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I haven't laughed so much in a very long time π
WHY does everyone except Sanli get married so quickly??!! DATE A LITTLE! If y'all don't want to date, at least keep a nice, large space between the engagement and wedding! They act like they date each other, but when they get married, they don't know the simplest things about their partners! SImei rushes off and tries to marry a guy who doesn't even seem to LIKE her.
I wish Erqiang dated Master Ma for some time. Their family is cute but it's kinda awkward, with him still calling her "Master" and I can't seem to see love for Erqiang as a man in Master Ma's eyes. She still seems to be talking to her intern/the sweet guy who is nice to her. They don't feel "married". I don't know how to explain it.
Yicheng still has that inferiority complex with Nanfang. I wish they had sorted it out at least a little before getting married. The siblings always accept his partners just because they're his partners. They're cordial, not familiar with these women.
Yiding used to help around the house and eat with the family, go to the movies, discuss things, work with Sanli, tell her everything, and give gifts to the Qiaos as a couple before he married Sanli. The entire family got familiar with him, listened to him and accepted him as a brother in the family before he got married. If anything happened with Sanli, the siblings had no problem calling him. Even when they broke up, no one stopped him from visiting during the New Year, and he was warmly welcomed even by their nasty father. They seemed to have a more normal progression to marriage.
I just don't know what to make of Simei anymore. It is as if she is stuck between a girl and womanhood. What I…
If they hadn't given us such a peaceful Episode 28, I really would have destroyed my laptop screen. I'm sure Simei knows Chenggang is complete trash. I can see that she's just desperately trying to make herself believe everything is all right. She's built her castles in the air and she just doesn't want to see it all come crashing down. I feel so bad for her daughter.
Even Chenggangβ that shameless jackassβ doesn't seem to be fully grown up. The jerk isn't like other cheaters we've seen in most dramas. He doesn't have that sinister, evil, professional-cheater air. It's like he cares about Simei but he's still a spoilt, cowardly baby who doesn't take responsibility for anything he does and lets his desires get the better of him. They both act like children.
That scene where Erqiang also picks up a knife and says "LET'S GO TO JAIL TOGETHER!" π My heart suddenly warmed. But I'm glad Yiding isn't a totally subdued guy... Yicheng and Erqiang would have ended up in jail if no one stopped them. They seemed to forget that they had wives and families who would be affected by their rash actions. Who else is there to yell "IS IT WORTH IT? GIVE ME THE KNIFE!" and knock some sense into them? Their coward father cowering behind everyone was so funny. I've moved on from hating the dad... he's just a big fat selfish joke to me now. Funny how I used to think he was the worst specimen of humanity when I started out on this drama π³ And now I've been traumatized by the whole host of evil trash.
I feel like his lack of confidence is going to destroy all his relationship with his family he can do anything…
I completely agree with you. Nanfang seems to be a wonderful human. I hope Yicheng is able to let go of his inferiority and just embrace the two families.
I really enjoyed Ep 28 as it portrayed that life was just rolling along for the Qiao family but why do I feel…
Yes! I loved Ep 28. Wayyyyyy less angst, they just let us enjoy the family being together π₯° everybody seemed so happy, we had Yiding being so adorable with his son and everyone gathering for New Years'! π I felt like everything was all right with the world!
Can't agree with you about Yi Ding. The way he speaks to Sanli when he gets angry is a just No No in my book and…
I don't think I could liken him to Chenggang. We've got consistent updates about him all through the series ever since he met Sanli. With all the instances we've seen him, I think we can sufficiently gauge his character. What he did was wrong but very weird for his character. Yiding isn't like Erqiang or Qiqi. I keep wondering how and why he would suddenly have such a violent temper.
We know he isn't a coward. He was the one who broke the chair over Master Ma's ex-husband when he was attacking Erqiang. He took charge and sprung into action when Erqiang had to be taken to the hospital. He's witnessed countless showdowns in the Qiao family and never ran away. Thus, he isn't a totally subdued/shy/stupid character.
I think what we have here is a case of "Even the mildest dog bites when pushed into a corner." He suddenly changed after his accident. What happened to make him like that? Was it the fact that his mom never cared for him while he was at the hospital? She never let up on her constant nagging and keeps demanding things from him, but there's only so much you can blind yourself to. Is he taking his frustration and anger out on her because she's the only one who takes his outbursts without retaliating?
The thing that makes me conflicted is their conversation in their bedroom when he asks for a divorce. He said nothing about his own feelings. How did the other divorces go? "I feel suffocated. I want to do what I want. I want to be free. I don't love you anymore." How does this one go? "You have it so rough. You're still so young." Nothing is ever about him. Why was he crying? Why did Sanli say she knew he was picking fights for no reason and that he'd be sad if she left with so much conviction? What did that sudden, desperate hug mean? I felt like he realized he couldn't compromise anymore. That he's too weak to overcome his childhood insecurities with his mother, but he could also see these insecurities were causing pain to Sanli. And the only option he could see was to let Sanli go. He didn't absolve himself of responsibility. He promised to take care of Sanli and their son. So what would change if he divorced her? She would have no obligations towards his mom.
I'm not ready to give up on him or assign him as another bad character yet. If he turns out to be a bad person, I'll be as shocked and hurt as Sanli would be. But they do have to talk things out and he definitely has to change.
I am getting close to all the drama, but I found YiDing very dangerous, after all the experience of films and…
I disagree about Yiding. I think he's just very very stressed out over having to choose between his mom and his wife. Of course, I'm not condoning his behavior, he was wrong to yell at her like that. But I think he's tried to please his mom all his life because he knows he isn't her son. I was cut to the heart when his mom said "He doesn't WANT to know." He's obviously trying to do everything he can to be accepted by his mom. He's obviously been hurt by her before. But now Sanli is also getting hurt and he has to make a decision.
Sanli-Yiding and Erqiang are the only ones who have convinced me that they really love their partners. I feel real love from them. Yiding is the most romantic male here. He will have to change, but I don't think he's a bad person.

It was a wonderful calm before the storm.
