I'm way behind in watching this, but I think in the beginning when he embarked on this desperate path and he was young and naive, to sell this contraband stuff, I don't believe it was as serious a crime. He didn't know it made people sick - did he? But it just somehow spiraled out of control the deeper he got into it, and even though he setup perfect crime, but then a dead body was discovered that started an investigation, and Songge made mistakes, and people affected also came after him. When a person is desperate and trapped, they will go out of their mind. His relationship with his father doesn't seem close.

But after he went home after some time the story doesn't say when but at some point, he was normal again, yet he kept pretending. I think Grandpa suspected it when he spilled hot porridge on his hands, yet he stayed unresponsive.
I read that Xu Kai said in livestream that Chen Hui was not pretending in the hospital, only after he got home, after he came out of it, then he pretended to still be unresponsive.

I felt that if Chen Hui didn't kill him first, he would kill Chen Hui, he kept coming after him. It's possible the outcome of this story had to be this way due to censorship. Perhaps they had limitation on how to make a happier ending. It had to be the worst case ending, otherwise, it'll never air.
