I don't think XK was ever a model who did catwalks on runway. He won the print ads/graphics category at China's international modeling contest, then signed up as tao bao model. Some people are just born naturally expressive. With his height and statuesque figure, he can emanate a distinctive and classy walk that exudes confidence, sophistication and grace that captures attention for its refined quality.

Recently I read a long discussion on Douban that Yu Zheng does not care about Xu Kai's career. Yu Zheng is a ruthless businessman, maybe borderline corrupt.
He'll do what's good for him, not the actor. I tend to believe that after Yanxi Palace, he used Xu Kai's overnight fame to raise up his actresses who were not popular yet or well-known yet. One in particular I won't mention her name. It was never about how to help Xu Kai's career. But Xu Kai took on those roles and performed well and has more than pay back Yu Zheng for giving him a start on Yanxi Palace. I don't' know if it's' true, but I watched a video that reported that Xu Kai actually turned down all the acting offers after he won his international modeling contest, the only offer he accepted came from Yu Zheng, and the rest is history. But Xu Kai has never complained after Yanxi Palace, just do what the boss wants, and more than paid him back. But now it's time for him to do more for himself where he wants to grow in his career, and hopefully, he can get out from under Yu Zheng who has become a roadblock. I recall a comment on douban someone wrote on the WoL discussion that Yu Zheng has really been holding Xu Kai back.

switching subject, there is a mannerism that reminds me of Tom Cruise when YZM after he told He Dong about his promotion, he places his curled-up fingers across his mouth and gives that big white smile with his dimples flashing, the way he sat too, I swear that exact demeanor and mannerism, like an attitude too, I saw Tom Cruise in one of his movies a long time ago did exactly like that. I don't know why I always remember that, but Tom Cruise has a huge smile. As soon as YZM did it, that memory came flashing back to me, and it gave so much personality to YZM.

Some will say XK acting is bland or wooden. There are different styles of acting and what viewers prefer to see is subjective to their tastes. Some viewers prefer more forced acting style (overact) because it is more easily recognized as acting, while others may appreciate the natural, subtle, and nuanced style of acting (underact) that involves deep expressions and body language. To appreciate the latter, I find it helpful to understand the character. Then those micro expressions will be understood. If someone is watching it while doing other things or fast forwarding, they may miss it.

Not everyone wants to compare for the sake of comparing. People tend to stick with what they like. What exactly is your purpose in watching dramas? Some people just want to enjoy a drama, to be entertained. However, you seem to have a need to compare Xu Kai to every other actor. You're taking the fun out of entertainment. It's exhausting and a waste of time (my opinion).
