I must be dense. What surprised me was that the mother daughter has always had a love hate relationship and the mother was not the person whom MCH confided in or asked for advice, nor was the mother a person who had real influence or impact in her life. Somehow, I didn't get that from the drama until MCH pointed that out to YZM toward the end of the drama. At first, I thought the mother daughter were very close and intimate (due to tender moments together in early episodes), but it took me almost to the end of the drama to realize that their bond mainly filial, one of respect, care, and love for family. Also, MCH is a perfect daughter who is obedient, kind, and compassionate toward everyone. The hero in her life was her grandmother who really raised her and her bond between her grandmother goes deeper than superficial filial bond. Her grandmother was the rock in her life, her soul mate, providing her the emotional support and wisdom and eventually her good fortune. Because there are too many roadblocks between mother and daughter, they have never understood each other. There are so many battles in MCH's life, and explosions with her mom. It really wasn't until her mother left the family and they all went back to her hometown, did MCH finally understood her mother better. It is common that parents don't tell their kids about their own struggles in their past. This was an eye opener for me because MCH was portrayed as this perfect character and she seemed close to her mom, yet they hardly know each other, but in the end, she's like most children, she never really understood her mom. Her mom doesn't understand her, not only a generation gap, but she grew up poor in rural China in a whole different world. In real life, misunderstandings, people end up with resentment, guilt, griefs, and regrets. In a fairytale, everyone lives happily ever after.
The mother chased the daughter to get marry but now the daughter is wealthy and independent and not in a hurry, and the mother no longer control her life.
