ML had resentment toward grandma growing up. He was left all alone to fend for himself at a young age. I do not believe he came back of his own accord but to repay a debt to Zhang who also said if you can do this, I'll promote you too. But the real reason was Zhang. Grandma said YZM is not bad by nature. So, I do not believe he would have done this to grandma on his own. The promotion is for Zhang, but Zhang said I'll also put in a good word for you. I'm not sure when he released his resentment toward her but that's why he never returned but he did keep in touch with her by letter over the years. But they are not close at all, they started to bond in the 2 months he was back; unfortunately, she passed away so soon.
He would have continued to pursue grandma, but she took ill and decided to stop.
He needs to repay his debt.

did you noticed that grandma only cried when she spoke to YZM in her taped funeral address, because he was the most miserable one, she felt so sorry for him?

i feel it slowed down because the plot has changed but i'm sure it build back up in couple of episdoes. I was riding the grandma cloud and then had to get off

Yao mother died in a car accident on the way to her boyfriends He must have been around 10 or 12? His dad is alive, just got out of prison, and now grandma has requested him to go visit the despicable man he has disowned as his father. No idea how long father was in prison, but Yao really was without any adults. He had to take care of himself since he was a kid.
Yao never visited his grandma since he went abroad and he's over 30 now, He said he hadn't visited grandma for number of years but sounds like he might have visited once or twice long time ago. The reason was he resented grandma for a long time for not controlling her son (Yao's dad)
Yao understands grandma's good intentions through her letter and her words to him before, but he doesn't understand why?

grandma can do whatever she wants it's her property incl. that house that she prob. got through her divorce settlement with YZM grandfather. But however, you look at it, and of course rightly so, but MCH is the favored one, she is partial to her and wants to help her and feels YZM doesn't need her help anymore. but the drama gave this tragic story of YZM and then gave prob. 5 min so far in the entire drama. I feel sorry for this poor guy even though I know grandma good intentions are prob. the right thing to do. I just wish the drama would have given just a little more revealing details so I can understand grandson and grandma better. Now if grandma gave the house to the Mai, then I would say that is totally unfair even though it is her right to do so because that house had belonged to YZM grandfather, I feel the drama is also lacking in revealing some background about the parents' difficulties in the past, it would help me to better understand them. But YZM face shows that after he read the letter, he still gently caressed his grandma's picture, and he now loves her despite what she did to him, creating a very difficult situation for him. I don't think YZM is the one seeking the hotel, he needs to repay a serious debt to an evil woman who saved his life when no one else helped him. Of course, there is added benefit she says she'll help him get promoted, but I believe as grandmas said YZM is not bad by nature, YZM if not for Zhang, probably never return for the hotel, because he still felt resentment. I believe he was forced into this and since he doesn't have emotional bond with grandma, he had no problem doing it for Zhang. I dislike this evil Zhang person who I feel killed grandma, triggered her heart to fail. At the funeral, grandma only cried when speaking to YZM, she broke down. That means to me, there is something so deep seated between grandson and grandma not revealed in the drama. It's not normal to walk out in the middle of a funeral or for grandma to start crying in the middle of sentence unless there is something been holding onto and then trigger it, but we 're left guessing as the drama didn't reveal much about their tensions in the past.

I was watching this poor Chinese struggling family I thought how real, now they're rich people.
I feel like I'm watching another drama and wait again to build back up the plot of the mother daughter conflicts that was never resolved

like I said the grandma is partial to MCH. When YZM asked grandma if she might be partial, she said no, I like you both, but she's not perfect, she can't see that she is partial

No character in this drama is interested in YZM past. Even the FL has not shown an interest.
Why does the drama bother to provide this information about him and spread out between many episodes? Grandma is dead. Why do they have to tell us about his dad and mom later?

she won't be able to deal with Zhang, not without his help.
basically, she's been learning from YZM since the day she ran into him in the elevator.
He's been in the shadows helping her

grandma told MCH that her independence will become her weakness.
independence can lead one to arrogance, thinking you are so good, you don't' need any help

people who are determined, hardworking, smart, talented, ambitious, and most of all passionate about what they do. they will find a way.

grandma never ran the hotel as profit entity. She ran it as a way to support her friends who are also family too her. grandma really did not run a business.
the hotel was passed down to her is my guess from her family.
Eventually the FL will go into wedding business to make profits.
I can see her friend can also sell jewelry for weddings.
not a bad idea actually. If they want to keep the hotel independent, wedding business is perfect. ML works for a big multinational hotel management corporation that manages and develops. His corporation's values, principles, vision, and mission are not aligned with an independently run hotel. Once merged, lose independence. But YZM had assured grandma he would do everything possible. As good as the offer is to shore up the hotel which is crumbing, and losing money, she doesn't' want to give it over. This is actually typical battle between small private company being gobbled up by big corporation.

so the ML (the stray cat) will adopt an owner (FL) and eventually the FL will decide to keep the stray cat (ML) but not sure how the mother daughter will fit into this plot. I guess the mother may not like the stray cat and throw him out?

I think grandma had an awful first marriage but the second marriage was blissful and it changed her too

That is one possibility. It could also be that it triggers him to remember the reason he became a stray cat was that she didn't handle her son, and so when she said don't be a stray cat and worried others, he thought, how do you think I became that way, who was there for me let alone worried about me? so, he left. but I'm sure then sitting under the tree, frozen in his thoughts, slowly his heart softens as he recalled the past 2 months, he got to know grandma and then he started to recall how she flew down to offer money to help him get an education, gave him advice to work hard, and that led him to better future. Then at that point, he realized his grandmother really did love him, and then he couldn't hold back, and he cried because a person like him doesn't cry easily. He cried because of all the regrets.

Why did YZM walk away when grandma cried that he wanders around like a stray cat makes other worry? What happened in his past that triggered him to walk away from funeral at that point? That's not normal unless its' something tragic so you want to get away. Did he remember all his resentments toward grandma? There is no bond between them except for what little past 2 months, but prior to his return, even though the two acted so cordial and friendly, actually he had a heavy heart toward her all those years, but did she know?
She said she knew her grandson very well, but she didn't' know that he resented her all those years and didn't want to see her again? She said she's best at bringing people together, but she never reconciled with her only grandson.

When YZM and MCH were choosing cheongsam for grandma, I don't think it was that she knew her better but the grandma he knew had changed after she remarried.
Maybe it was the influence of her second husband.

in the funeral, she told Zao that she took care of him the most, no? I assumed that was those 6 yrs. his parents had to work? It would make sense since the mother family is so poor.

actually, I thought grandma was perfect, but after the inheritance, she has every right to give it to MCH but I still see her as partial because she was close to MCH , her favorite.
in a way he was not totally honest either, because in a scene, YZM hinted she was partial to MCH and she said no, I like you both, but her actions speak otherwise. she has every right to do what she wants with her property but she's partial. nothing wrong with that either, she is allowed to be partial. But that makes her not perfect grandma I thought.

MCH basically been trained by grandma for her whole life. It's like grandma was raising her successor past 20 yrs. MCH shares her values and vision. Poor YZ M never had a chance. Women stick together.
