I also came across that if a movie is dubbed, Douban rating will be reduced by at least 1 point. So, WOL opening Douban rating of 6.5 is a commendable feat.

WOL was able to gain considerable popularity and high ratings despite airing alongside other popular movies. WOL has a different genre and theme than other popular shows, so it might appeal to a more specific audience. The success of a show depends on various factors such as the genre, the storyline, the cast, the marketing strategy, and the fan base.

Lastly, WOL 8.5 on MDL is an excellent rating to have.

This movie got 2.1B views worldwide and has MDL rating 9.0 which is amazing, yet the # watchers is only 11,227. Is it because MDL is mainly fan based?

I love this drama. It is one of my favorite Xu Kai works. It took me a while to figure out the schemes. The comments on You Tube help me to piece things together. Actually, Su Yuehua character is the most complex and the actress is pretty and her acting is well done. There are many older seasoned actors who elevated the quality of acting for this movie as well as other younger supporting casts acted very well too. The sisterhood between Yao Zijin and Yin Zipin is beautiful to watch. Once I figured it all out and watched the entire series, I now just enjoy re-watching the sweet and tender, as well as complicated scenes that involve interactions between ml and fl. I like Xu Kai's acting because he can express his emotions through his eyes and face and body movements so beautifully. Here, in Royal feast, he did a great job of portraying the romantic and temperamental prince, Zhu Zhanji. I like that this movie is not comedy, so Xu Kai doesn't have to act silly. Xu Kai never overacted in this movie. His expressions are deep and moving, but you have to understand what is going on to notice those emotions, otherwise, you think he's staring into space. The expressions are subtle but it's visibly there and exudes deep emotions.

I've seen endings like this in chinese dramas where everyone dies so endings like this never shocking to me which is why the reactions here are fascinating

WoL is a drama that does not rely on clear-cut villains to be engaging. It has a complex and nuanced plot that spans a rebellion and a post-rebellion era, where the true villain is gradually revealed. However, WoL is not a typical drama. It focuses more on the inner turmoil of the protagonists than on the external antagonists. It explores how the characters cope with their psychological and emotional challenges, as well as their physical and external ones. Wol is a light-hearted drama that may not appeal to you if you prefer more direct villains.

Emperor Taizu of Song, the founder of the Song dynasty, defeated the generals who each own territories (similar to the Cui family) and united the country. Then he went further to even downsized his own military and only kept a core Imperial army around the capital. He wanted to avoid the wars that broke out during the Five Kingdoms. However, it didn't take long for armies in the outer areas of the country to invade. Hence, the Mongols took over China.
There was a general Yang Ye under the Song Dynasty who was able to defend the country, but however, he was later executed for allegedly colluding with the enemy (similar to Cui Yi being falsely accused)

Li Ni loyalty is to the throne. The one thing he feared the most was to have to fight Cui Yi and Cui Lin in battle. His solution was to protect Cui Yi, Cui Lin, and avoid wars. If not for the Cui Yi love for Cui Lin, Cui Yi and Cui Lin would have fought Li Ni on the battlefield.

The events of the court charging Cui Yi with treason (colluding with enemy) or demanding his army be dismantled are commonly done in history. A weak King does not want strong military presence. The court is suspicious of a strong army.

Ep 34 is a poignant and emotionally charged episode. It depicts the struggles of Cui Yi and Cui Lin as they face emotional conflict and difficult decisions that will take an emotional toll on them. The episode also showcases the unconditional love of a father for his daughter, and the courage of a father to make the toughest decision in his life for his daughter’s sake.
The episode highlights how frail the human condition can be when faced with traumatic events in life. When people are depressed, they forget to take care of themselves and spiral into despair. It can be difficult to keep going when your heart is filled with deep grief, sadness, regret, guilt, and trouble. Cui Lin’s emotional devastation, triggered by the heartbreaking sight of her father’s mental decline, affects her relationship with Li Ni. The scene is a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s on both the patient and their loved ones, as Cui Lin is forced to confront the emotional turmoil of watching her father’s memories and identity slip away.

I really enjoyed Xu Kai scene here in episode 33, at around 28 minutes and 47 seconds, Li Ni finished imploring to “clear your name.” The camera then shifted to Cui Yi, before returning to Li Ni. He stared at Cui Yi with an intense, piercing, agonizing, sorrowful, desperate, determined, and penetrating gaze, yet remained composed and resolute (undaunted, unflinching, and fearless despite the difficult task in front of him). You could feel the intensity gripping him as he waited for Cui Yi’s response.

Xu Kai’s performance in this serious confrontational scene with an older, seasoned actor was impressive and convincing. Xu Kai’s portrayal of a young heroic warrior and noble prince was so convincing that he exuded an aura of nobility and spoke with commanding intelligence, authority, and a sense of urgency. I really want to see Xu Kai do more serious roles and less romance and comedy. He has a gift for expressing deep emotions.

these kinds of endings are the most memorable

if you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't even noticed. It's not important detail. More important is the story than minor details. It's fiction. people can fly in the air, so if there is no blood, no big deal. When you watch these types of movies, you just go with it, and focus on the story.

if you want to watch WoL up to ep 30 then finish it off at 31 because part of the scene in 30 carries over to 31 so it is more fitting to stop there if you don't want to keep going, but maybe you will. My view is that Ep 30/31 is the turning point of the story, not the ending. It is not a serious movie like AJTL but quite light-hearted, mostly humor, and lots of youthful romantic love. It's for the young at heart and people with a sense of humor.

WoL to me is a positive and encouraging movie. One of the themes that I like is to never give up on living and live well.

it's not just experience, some people just have that "it factor" and LSS has it, not to put any other actor down.. just calling her out on her own merits

So magical. Pure beauty. Awe-inspiring. Classy. Timeless. This will be viewed forever. What is impressive about them is that they make it look so easy to be this beautiful and graceful. These two are naturally expressive and have beautiful, graceful figures and gentle, sweet, innocent aura about them that appeals to me. They're a perfect match in this video. Kindred spirits. Xu Kai looked so proud of her. As he said, "I just want her to shine". Jing Tian looked so pleased to be with him and trusts him. Their chemistry here reminds me of Li Ni and Cui Lin. He admires her and is there for her only. Just like Li Ni, always attentive to Cui Lin. They really lived up to the award for Most Charming.

I spoke too soon. I really thought rating could go higher based on all the reviews. Unfortunately for AJTL, seems the ending has impacted the ratings due to lower rewatch value by audience ratings, and could lose future audience appeal. Personally, I don't like the rating scores. Rewatch value is so subjective.
