Kai Zhi and Shu Hong happened so quickly... I feel like there's a chunk of script that got cut. I felt like they were compatible soul mates, but the script writers should have given us some more bread crumbs and tension build up....

Also what is with all the guys man handling Shu Hong?! She accepted Kai Zhi's after a few moments of resistance but man.... It still felt too forceful, especially after Liang Xiang's in Ep 15.

Yes, Yang Kaizhi's interest in Shuhong started on ship. Remember how he offered bread to her but she took advantage and asked him to deliver to Wu Tian Bai? After that, he was no longer interested but they did have some sparks in episode 28, presumably because Wu Tian Bai is now dead and he sees her as a free woman.

Agreed. It seems like a 180 from the pleasant, helpful, motivated youth in the earlier episodes.

Why is everyone acting like Shuhong entered into a consensual relationship with Liang Xiang? And she's just going along with it?! Also does anyone else think that maybe Tian Bai isn't dead? Who else would have made the handmade bomb that targeted the Prince Regent Zaifeng?

Ep 30-31 What in the world?? Liang Xiang is living in Lalaland.

The main inconsistency of the ML is pissing me off. He seems good and wants Capt Hiraka to be true to his fiancee, and rejects the prostitutes that he is offered but then violates Shu Hong?? Then agrees to marry the girl his mom picked despite still thinking of Shu Hong. I feel like I'm missing a thread of what in the world is going through his head??? Which makes the character unrelatable despite Li Xian doing a fine acting job.

I heard that the scene where she is changing clothes and Wu Tian Bai comes to hug her was changed in new edition. In the 2022 edition released, it was a lot more explicit that they had relations. Wu Tian Bai is a horrible man but I can see why then FL stays with him. Unfortunately, she is raised in a society where women are not independent and he has flashes of brilliance and shows her that he does care, so she stays in this situation ship....

It's a shame that there isn't more active discussion on this drama. The story telling and editing is a little inconsistent, seeming jumping from one thing to another clear logical flow. Ep 15 was a great example of this.

Huge fan of Qin Jun Jie after seeing his charismatic Men San Dao in Heroes. He's also one of the rare actors that looks better in a Qing Dynasty queue than with a modern haircut!

On Ep 16 and boy it's been a little draggy for the last few episodes. Also way too much screen time for the second and third couples. Does it pick up again?

Qiqi was raised by their aunt so had limited interactions with the other kids. He had his own arc (got a girl pregnant in HS, married and divorced her when she demanded it, raised his little one and took care of her parents). He did start joining some of their family dinners and he was critical to saving Yicheng at the end.

I'm officially addicted to this one.

What happened to the pacing and storytelling?! On ep 24 and it's been so disjointed!

I liked his back story as a child learning to embroider with his little mother. But the Zhang family arc.... Like he suspected there were ulterior motives to an official's family looking for a merchant. He lived it with his parents. He CHOSE to accept her and that was not a backstory leading up to his habits of forcing himself on other girls. He is a selfish monster and the writers are abysmal for trying to paint him as sympathetic character deluded by the Zhang family.

I feel like they tried to make Wu Lian sympathetic but failed...
