I so agree with you about Zhao Yuanzhou's death. I viewed it the same way. He sacrificed himself even if he badly wanted to live and had already had the will to live. That thought and his hesitation - to self slapping had been buried in my mind until now, like him getting stabbed by Zhou Yichen didn't hurt me, what hurted me most was knowing he wanted to live so much. It was SACRIFICE indeed. This is why I said in my review that he is the epitome of willingness. I also agree with you that this drama is more than just about choices and consequences but FATE itself. It had a bigger role here towards their characters ; especially Zhao Yuanzhou. Yeah he is the perfect protagonist in this drama because he accepted and defied fate at the same time. Like he accepted his death, but he changed his fate along with it as he became the foundation for a better world and people no longer hold prejudice against him ; they understood not all humans are kind and not all demons are evil.

with how I interpreted it, the sword willingly came to him because his feelings for Yanhui became stronger, hence there is love in his heart compared to before when it was only filled with hatred and it was mentioned only those with pure heart can wield the sword. Love is like an element that can give you a pure heart.
