at this point of time, his cousin was paralysed/comatosed and he already separated from his family. they were well off but was hit by the 2008 financial crisis, so he will take it upon himself to earn a living in hk as a construction worker (tutor in the novel) for his cousin's family and medical fees. poor qx couldn't even go to uni in peace.
his life was full of uncertainties so he felt that he couldn't burden yingtao and chose to separate himself until things get better. his personality makes some of his decisions hard for viewers to understand but hopefully these context will lessen the amount of criticisms yall will/are giving his character 🥹🥹
you won't believe the amount of tears i shed for ep 15 even though i knew it was coming 😭 i cried over the novel but man, seeing both of them act out that scene was so moving.
her innocence and hopefulness being contrasted against jqx's own conflictions and sadness, forcing himself to smile and make empty promises with her 😭😭😭
despite jqx's limited screentime, he really made an impact, please be happy soon my yingtao and qiaoxi 😭😭

plEASE i couldn't stop thinking about ye yun for DAYS after i finished reading the novel. my heart hurt so bad for her, but yet i had to accept that she is very very aware of every decision she chose to make, including how she chose to be in and out of relationships after officially being rejected by yu qiao.
i remembered praying that yu qiao's heart would warm up her but alas you can't force feelings :/

considering how close she views qiaoxi, it's understandable how this 17 y.o girl is upset when her best friend is keeping such a big news from her, not even subtly hinting his future plans at all.
i do understand qiaoxi's plight though, he is too mature for his age and is used to planning thoroughly and being independent. but we gotta put ourselves in yingtao's shoes also and think like her to understand why she reacted so negatively
i haven't read nor intend to read it but from what i'm hearing i don't think it is?
anyway the drama is only borrowing the character names, plot is very different so that's why some fans are still holding onto a small hope that they will change the ending outcome hahaha

you need to be in a certain headspace to enjoy The Best Thing to it's fullest imo! it's slow and non-drama so people can find it boring if they're in the mood for something more stimulating. TBT does have steamy scenes in the later episodes when they do get together though so that might be something for you to look forward to?
OG on the other hand is more focused on family and friendships with differents arcs from their childhood, teens and later adulthood so they are very different genres :)

it's funny when you mention that he only cares about aura farming when my friend (who isn't his fan nor read this novel) saw reuters of him as a construction worker and asked me why did he become so haggard and why he looked so different from his other dramas. ZLH studies his characters very well and tries his best to act out how they were written.
jiang qiaoxi is written to be far too mature for his age who only received real love from his qunshan gang, it's therefore expected that he will come off cold and quiet for the first half of the drama when qiao xi is still in high school living with his parents.
if you expect actors and actresses to only be "good" by playing poor and foolish characters or even looking ugly on camera, then maybe you should watch less idol dramas.
i'm probably being biased but as someone who has watched ZLH since his debut maiden holmes, i only see someone who constantly strive to become better than his previous works. he did not study acting and no prior entertainment experience and to see his growth in skills and personal character, i am very proud of how far he has come.
it's following the novel very closely thus far. So for those who might be put off by qiao xi's mom, just hang in there until he decides to fight for himself, you won't regret it!

THEN i read the novel (just finished it in fact) and now i rate this adaptation a 6/10... sorry the novel just had soo much more to offer that i felt this drama didn't showcase it's massive potential at being one of the best in 2025. The Best Thing was a rare one at surpassing it's novel by leaps and bounds (while majority novels and dramas are *equally* love by fans), but man... this drama left me high and dry though at least the novel satiated something in me.
So for future viewers, this drama isn't BAD but it could've been sooooo much more!

Sure, he started off interested in her and wanted her contact info but by no means was this predatory and inappropriate imo. in the first place, he wasn't a doctor per se for her, just a consulting medical practitioner which is a vastly different connotation as what you are suggesting. you can scroll down the comments quite abit, there has already been comments explaining the culture difference from the west and why your concerns should not fully apply to the drama.
To give my 2 cents, i think this drama is wonderful in our the decisions made throughout the 28 eps by the ML and FL are very realistic and i can see myself making the same when put in their shoes. Hope this has been somewhat helpful in aiding your appreciation of the message The Best Thing is trying convey - to love yourself first and the right kind of love will eventually come to you :)
