Speaking only for myself as fan of his, I find that a lot of his more recent works tend to rely too heavily on him to carry the entire story and one man can only do so much. If there are unsatisfying plot holes, bad camerawork, weird editing choices, a lack of chemistry, or anything else, then those things will naturally distract from the acting performances. I also think that a lot of shows get so overhyped that people go in expecting too much and then get disappointed when a show they thought would be a 10/10 felt more like an 8/10. That's a bigger drop emotionally than going from a 7/10 to 5/10.
I don't know if you're still updating this, but I would happily suggest a few additions from out LGBTQ directors and screenwriters:
- Bad Buddy has an outing plotline and is a crown jewel of the genre - Not Me has an entire arc surrounding a pride parade and protest - Only Friends feels like a modern, elevated homage to shows like Queer As Folk - Moonlight Chicken explores themes of community and poverty from a queer lens - The Eclipse is about challenging all forms of authoritarianism, from fascism to homophobia - Never Let Me Go has not one but two of the most supportive parent characters ever
Also, you can have to decide for yourself if Gay OK Bangkok counts as BL or not, but it's undeniably gay.
