Alchemy of Souls is a breathtaking blend of fantasy, romance, and mystery that captivates from the very first episode. Set in the fictional land of Daeho, the series weaves a rich tapestry of magic, soul-shifting, and destiny, anchored by compelling characters and intricate storytelling. The chemistry between the leads, especially the enigmatic assassin trapped in a blind woman's body and her noble yet conflicted master, adds emotional depth to the narrative. Visually stunning with lush cinematography and elegant costume design, the show immerses viewers in a world both ancient and otherworldly. Its themes of identity, sacrifice, and love are explored with nuance and heart, making Alchemy of Souls not just a fantasy drama, but a poetic journey of transformation. A must-watch for fans of epic storytelling and emotional resonance.
Mu-deok + Jang Uk = one of my fav couples --> you can feel the emotion and love from the very start and how he suffers in season 2 , just beautiful

mild spoilers

I immensely enjoyed EVERYTHING about the storyline, even the villain of the story did so well and tied in the story(even though I hated him). it's a total re-watchable series.

I also enjoyed the rise of Jang Uk (against all odds), his character development, the dedication of Maid Kim and his friends. he also proved that "destiny delayed is not destiny denied " to come out triumphant.

lastly I loved the inserts of comedy and romance(the right amount) wherever they where needed between the main characters.

Quite the Unusual Masterpiece Plot

Naksu, a shadow assassin feared by all in Daeho, found herself caught in a fight with Songrim mages that she could not extricate herself from. Left with no choice, she cast the forbidden sorcery of Alchemy of Souls while on the run, where she transfered her soul from her battered, dying body to another living person. When she finally came to, she found herself in the body of a blind girl on the way to be sold to a brothel, Mu-deok. Although her vision is now good, her escape attempt still failed as she posseses none of her past ability and skill as Naksu, and instead trapped in the body of an extremely weak girl. Jang Uk, one of the heir of a prominent family in Daeho, noticed that Mu-deok is a soul shifter, and hearing that Naksu had been captured dead after a failed casting of soul switching sorcery, he makes a bet that Mu-deok is Naksu after seeing the soul shifter sign in her eyes. He buys her off the brothel and made her his maid, and after several incidents, manage to make Mu-deok admit who she really was and agree to a deal of becoming his master in return for him to help her to retrieve her original powers. Thus began Jang Uk’s journey from being a useless young man born under the King’s star, whom no one dared to teach due to his father’s order, to a person that would save all of Daeho, after being under the tutelage of Naksu the feared evil assassin.

At first, I thought this is a typical reborn assassin female centric story as I saw Naksu’s overpowered performance in the opening scene, but it turned out to be zero-to-hero male centric kind. I had a hard time accepting Jang Uk as the ML due to his sharp, mischievous look with bratty character, and at some point i actually prefered the SML Seo Yul for his extremely green flag character plus gentle, sweet looking face. But Jang Uk kinda grew into me as he matured up into a responsible young man.

Jang Uk, Seo Yul and Park Danggu are the trio that one could never really prefer one from another, they kind of complement each other. Seo Yul is the extreme righteous one who would torture himself when he could do nothing to a wrong in his eyes, Jang Uk is the mischievous-often-misunderstood one who would wreak chaos just to be noticed, while Park Danggu is the balance between them, the one who is bratty enough to stand side by side with Jang Uk but with a mind sound enough to be resonate with Seo Yul, practically the balance between them all. Even with such contrasting characters, they would still stand by each other with complete trust.

I love what they did with the Crown Prince, a grey character that could turn red and green flag in a blink of an eye in accordance to situations that could benefit himself without sacrificing much conscience.

And Mu-deok is one of the most eye-catchy character of all. I love the accent she speaks with, which reminds me of a dielect in my country, though different language, the way of speaking sounded quite the same. Mu-deok is the accidental maid with conflicting assassin instinct. Realizing she had none of her powers that used to allow her reign above all, she had to resort to autracious acts that she wouldve never done before, doing housechores to serve masters and sucking up or giving in to people of higher status just to survive the day. Her private banters with her pupil is fun to watch, but when the going gets tough, she turned into the devilish Naksu that found humanity in the end.

I totally love the comic relief of the love triangle between the serious but rather slow-witted Park Jin leader of Songrim, the gentle motherlike Maidservant Kim and the chaste and reserved Master Lee.

Totally love the fight chroreograph here. They look fierce and forceful, especially when there is spells involved, and the CGI didnt look comical at all. What I like the most is that not every stab slash pound and flog would make the receivers to vomit blood, whish i see prevalent in most ancient shows.

The story ended with a rather cliffhanger but I dont mind as I didnt have to wait for the next production to release, cuz I watch this waaaay after the hype has ended. Now off I go to season 2. Toodledoo.

One of the best dramas I've watched

I'll start off by saying that I absolutely loved Hotel del Luna, so another drama by the Hong sisters was a must watch for me. And I think that they did not disappoint.

The story is so well crafted and creative. There are no glaring plot holes. Everything that happens or appears is tied into the story well without seeming forced. The romances were paced very well (not falling in love too fast). The characters don't make boneheaded moves that make me yell at my TV. Overall is a very well thought out story.

On the topic of the couples, I honestly really liked all of the side couples. Yes, the Dang Gu/Cho Yeon couple had very little actual development, but somehow ended up being one of my favorites.

As for the cast, Jung So Min and Lee Jae Wook really made this show what it is. They, along with the rest of the case, did such a good job with immersing me into the story.

The only thing that I didn't like is the ending. I got so attached to Mu-deok/Jung So-min, then you end it like that? I barely wanted to watch season 2 because of that.

Apart from my one complaint, this show was such a good production. The story kept me hooked the entire time. Everything was cohesive and purposeful. It was very well paced, episodes were a good length. I saw someone mention that it could have been half the length with the same story, however I really enjoy spending every possible minute with the cast/watching the show. I never found myself bored.

In a world of sloppy rom-coms, this show is such a breath of fresh air, with it's focus on the fantasy story and action scenes, all while still incorporating some of my favorite romances/couples. It's very rare that I find a show that I like this much.

So many genres mix in together in harmony. Off to a great start. Ignore the review bombing here.

I can't write long reviews. So in short, based on first 2 episodes, it's an absolute delight. There's comedy, action, supernatural, magic and mages mixed in an historical setting. But it succeeds nonetheless. Also the casting choices are great. Main leads have amazing chemistry and rapport established already in two episodes. I have never been into historical settings, but even i am really looking forward to what's next. Bit disappointed that people are review bombing the show here. So many will ignore this show because of what's happening here.

the chemistry between FL and ML is great but a little too childish like for me

i gave 6/10 for story and it’s from the soul shifter and the 4 great houses story. the romance didn’t hit the spot, it’s just not there for me. I’m not into that kind of behavior of ML
Naksu/Mudeok is basically mothering her lover which I kinda dislike that he put her on that spot (annoying)

acting and casting is 10/10 Lee Jae Wook kinda delivered, he is great even though his character Jang Uk is not my favorite but Lee JaeWook is a great actor, ngl. Jung So Min is an underrated actress, I watched all of her works, I love her unique style and cuteness and seeing her playing Naksu/Mudeok is amazing, she did such a well done! I wish she has more series coming. Min Hyun being Yul is suitable for him, he’s giving such a warm type and I feel sad for him but if he wants the girl he should step up to the game, that kind of unrequited love only exists in drama 😆 it doesn’t work that way in real life! he keeps quiet but also being high alerts on duty, such a character. sad.

I was rooting for Jang Uk to grow up and he did after a season, so to season 2.
nothing to say more I guess

Very rewatchable show

Strange title but the preview was humorous. So glad I started watching it. Now rewatching my fav episodes while waiting for the extension 4 episodes. The chemistry between the whole cast is so endearing. Good friends, enemy turned almost friends, adults getting the reverse results trying to protect their kids. Just wish the storyline moved forward in a direct fashion more. They always start with the climax and then show the ‘backstory’ even if the backstory took place the day before. So it’s like watching forwards and backwards forwards and backwards. For the main plot it makes sense. But they do it for even small events like Uk catching the Golden Fish. And I wish Uk fight scenes were longer. After all the angst training etc the fight scenes which usually show his improvements are so short. Blink of an eye and it’s over. Especially the 10 fight with Yul. I loved it though too short.

Breath of fresh air

This is my first time writing a review and wowza I'm really loving this drama so far! I have mostly watched just C-Dramas. I have zero expectations coming into it, but found myself adoring the characters, even all the older characters are just so enjoyable to watch! The chemistry between the main leads is perfect and I really am starting to love the Prince so much. Surpisingly funny, such good comedic timing in such random moments I found myself laughing out loud. Hanging out badly for the next episode! This is such a welcome gem and I'm so happy I gave it a shot!

This is the best historical movie so far in 2022, i love the suspense, the way the male leads behaves and the female lead is the right person for the role, i love everything about the movie. All the actors are doing really great, all the 8 episodes so far are actually nice and worth rewatching.
From episode 1 - episodes 8, there havent been any dull moment. I love the love chemistry between the male lead and the female lead. The fact is that they cant do without each other.
Practically going by the tale, just wondering why the queen has to be the head of the soul shifters.

This is crazy!!!

Alchemy of soul had me search on google how to wait for an episode in a week. Before watching the first episode, I had my routines and priorities. Now I have depression and addiction. Every aspect of this show is perfect and well balanced. when I say there's comedy, I mean that which actually makes you laugh and not one that was put for the sake of it. And if you can laugh, you won't do it once or twice. It'll become a routine.

There's comedy in this show. But comedy isn't even mentioned in the genres. Now imagine what the drama delivers in terms of the listed genres. Can you even imagine? But what's even crazier is the blend of everything: The Osts will make you repeat the scenes forever. The cinematography, the story, the cast, the script... everything about this drama is out of this world.

This is the kind of show I have to wait for an episode in a week. As usual, the online community gave me some solutions:

1. Be productive, one week is fast
2. watch other shows, play video games, ... find something to do, don't be winny bitch
3. I mean...there are other things to do than wait for a korean fantasy drama.
4. blah blah blah

but I decided to focus on the good side of the wait:

1. It teaches patience.
2. That Dday feeling.
3. Plenty of time to go crazy about an episode with fellow Alchemists
4. Theories and fans' insights. There are actually crazy brilliant kaddicts who breaks down concepts from dramas and you just love it. It's like a beautiful addition you never knew you needed.
5. Dreams: I actually dream about shows. My brain creates its own version of the next episode. this has happened a lot.

but seriously, for this show I need something intense to keep me alive. It doesn't even have to be a Kdrama, any movie will do. I tried tomorrow but it's just really lacking, or maybe my standards have skyrocketed.

Hey Alchemists!!
