One of the Best Palace dramas
One of the best political Chinese dramas I’ve seen. Very well written and the acting was phenomenal. I enjoyed that the main characters had a dark side and through that darkness they were able to find the good within themselves. The passionate love between the main characters and how it developed was outstanding, they saw each other for who they truly were and loved each other regardless. It was also refreshing to see strong female characters that were mature and not so childish and helpless. I don’t mind seeing a female character start off innocent and then grow into a mature woman but some dramas just portray the female extremely childish til the end. Not the case with this drama, all the females held strong roles with personality.

UM DOS MELHORES CDRAMAS POLÍTICOS
É um drama muito bom! Me lembra Love Like The Galaxy e The Rise of Phonexis! O jogo político, a seriedade da coisa, a pitada de romance ideal... quase perfeito! Então vamos lá para a resenha:Enredo: é muito bom. É sério. Fiel a novel.

Quite an unique plot
LIKEHow Xie Ju An yearning for Xue Ning's attention - his jealousy making him so hot!
When Xie Wei and Yan Mu talking to each other in front of a withered tree - that scene was touching
DISLIKE
Poor Xue Ning and Zhang Zhe - there were always something there blocking their lives
Cannot believe there is actually someone like Xue Yuan - he is so pathetic
Treacherous King Ping Nan - what a jerk and he should die by a thousand deaths
Selfish Empress Dowager Xue and the silly Xue Shu - seriously..
MUSIC - personal fav
借梦 Jie Meng - 周深 Zhou Shen
REWATCH VALUE
Shall re-watch when I'm free one day

FL is Beautiful.
The basic storyline, where both ML and FL had switched identities had great potential that were not well developed. There's much confusing major details that didn't make sense. How did the FL and ML ended up journeying together to the capital? A father not recognising his son? Confusing time frames, e. g. Yan Lin seem to know JXN way before XW but they kinda arrive in the capital simultaneously....
What exactly is XW's disease that is so incapacitating at times and yet is miraculously absent at the end?
The Emperor, Lord Linzi and Princess are siblings. With different degrees of friends...... YL knowing JXN long time but Prince only meeting JXH later. Same for relationships between Princess, YL, XW and JXN etc. It's like these people exist within their own specific time frames that may or may not overlap.
Within a short time period, not well chronicled, XW arrived and rose to be the most trusted advisor to the Emperor. Its not clear how this happened. And of course it happened with him incognito to the Emperor.
And the baddies are just so underwhelming and totally undeserving of the heroic exploits of the good guys.
There's enough to keep moving on to the next episode .....much prob due to a forlorn hope that the storyline would fill up the gaps ....or to the enigmatic FL.

In my top 5 favourites
This story is one filled with intrigue, manipulation, bravery and loyalty. There are lighthearted moments through to ones where the depths of despair and personal sacrifice come through loud and clear.
The characters are flawed and believable and the story develops layer by layer and very early on it is evident that not all is as it seems.
The chemistry between Zhang Linghe and Bai Lu is a slow burn but by the end the sparks fly spectacularly and all of the actors really showcase their talents.
The set is incredible with amazing attention to detail & sumptuous costumes and the fight scenes are realistic and at times funny (qins do not make good weapons).
It needs to be watched (at least) twice as there is so much to take in and quite a few subtle prompts that I missed the first time

One of the best historical /palace dramas!!.
This was such an amazing drama. The storyline is beautifully packaged, there are nuances of romance, sadness, family, friends. The acting of each actor makes my heart moved. Not only the main character, but the supporting characters are also very good. So far the story is neatly packaged, harmonious and interconnected. With all kinds of problems they solve them with a climax and well And well happy ending. You will also be spoiled with luxurious visual effects, with makeup, art and the like. There is also an action part, basically complete. Thank you to all the teams involved in this beautiful drama. Was this review helpful to you?
This one has everything I love about Chinese period dramas
The main couple embodies both the "Wattpad bad boy" toxic dynamic and the "stealing glimpses of your high school crush" butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling. Both of the leads are toxic, scheming their own games, neither radiating sincerity at first. The goodness in their layered characters appears gradually. The ML is an actual red flag, but only during his mental episodes. This adds an exciting layer to their relationship, as we get the thrill of a bad boy romance minus the guilt, since he’s not himself when he’s being a monster. But then again, maybe he’s just unleashing his true, unrestrained self, only other times he’s holding back.
The male lead’s innocent crush—secretly studying her face, stealing shy glances, making lame excuses just to be around her—absolutely heart-fluttering. These lighthearted, fun moments gradually evolve into a deep, passionate love over time. The transition was seamless, and how they embraced their feelings and built trust between each other happened at the perfect pace.
The drama explores many themes: palace politics, revenge, toxic relationships, and fluffy romance, with each arc being captivating and well-balanced. Definitely a must watch and became my favorite cdrama so far!

XIE WEI IS EATINGGGGG
That man was starving.I love it when toxic men YEARNS.
I've heard and seen zlh and bai lu since I discovered cdramas last december—they're popular on the scene—but haven't seen them on action PROPERLY. Till now, and they are so good.
What I love:
+ zlh suits this type of characters. I need him on another one now. He looks hot when angry and toxic. Manifesting Zhu Yu will have this 🤞
+ Xie Wei's hair deserve a special mention. That is gorgeous. There was also one scene I caught where he flicked his hair, so sassy I love it.
+ I also love the detail where Xie Wei's real identity is implied throughout the series and not immediately declared. Makes the 'uncle' much more impactful.
+ The Jiang father always protecting his daughters 10/10
+ PRINCESS ZHIYI MY POOKIEEEE!!! "One day, when Yanlin brings down the State of Yue with the troops of the State of Qian, come to me with the soil of my homeland and bring me back to the capital of my home country." TEARS. JUST PURE TEARS.
+ Xie Wei getting caught kissing her forehead. THAT WAS SO UNEXPECTED I SCREAMED!!!!! and Xie Wei just nonchalantly staring.. PERFECT.
+ Xie Wei crashing out and begging Xuening to stay?????? MY MAN WAS DESPERATE BUT VALID.
+ "You're mine." "I'm not." "Then I'm yours." JUST KILL ME RN?????
+ The twins!!!
What I do not like:
+ Xue Shu
+ That dramatic lighting. I love and hate it.
+ What happened to my Fangyin 😭
+ Yinzhi, when I catch you, istg
The gasps I let out from this series. The kisses 🤭 ep 36 🤸♀️ Fangyin getting burned and stabbed (I will not accept it, that was so fucked up and for what), Xie Wei's hand (boy I understand, I knew you were gonna do it but my god that was intense), Xue Shu sleeping with the Emperor (girl what was the point, you still turned back to your father's leash), Jian Shu getting stabbed?! I was so worried meanwhile Xie Wei and Xuening are talking in the middle of it all and I thought he was bleeding to death on the side.
I miss them now. My girl fangyin, you deserve better.

gosh... the editing...
the acting and story are good, but the editing really made me feel very uncomfortable when watching it.I discovered editing like this when watching The Long Ballad, so I thought this drama was edited a long time ago, but it turns out this is a new production. I'm quite disappointed because of this.
For me, editing is as important as the actor's acting, so I lowered my rating on this drama even though I was waiting for it because it's Bailu's drama. I really liked her in the drama TTEOTM, the first xianxia drama I watched.
then the make-up of the female players is also not neat, especially on the lips. Like the make-up stylist didn't pay enough attention, even the make-up for Bailu was the same, I couldn't focus on watching because of this.
in some episodes, I had to skip a lot of things because they were so long. especially in episode 12 during the coming of age ceremony, it takes 1 episode to argue in the same place.
I'm satisfied with the ending but why is Bailu's clothing style less attractive in the ending? Her make-up this time is beautiful but not her clothes

Fresh story from the usual reborn trope
One of my favourite chinese drama so far. Smart female lead and male lead. Rewatching it 3 times already.Intriguing politics and revenge. Bai Lu and Zhang Ling He acted really good for this drama. This drama is the best in the reborn trope.
Additionally, the songs, music, and wardrobe for this drama are beautiful.

A Must Watch for First Time Viewers of Chinese Historical Dramas
Honestly, I really miss this drama because it was my very first historical Chinese drama. And thanks to Story of Kunning Palace, I immediately fell in love with the genre. I think this drama, starring Bai Lu and Zhang Linghe, is truly well done especially for someone like me who’s new to historical C-dramas.In my opinion, this drama sits right in the middle. It’s not too heavy, but it’s not exactly light either. That’s why I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to start exploring historical Chinese dramas. Trust me if you’re looking for something super light, I worry it might ruin your expectations. Most historical Chinese dramas are much heavier and more complex, so Story of Kunning Palace is the perfect entry point.
In the story, Zhang Linghe plays a major red flag character, while Bai Lu portrays a smart and strategic woman. Their dynamic makes the drama feel balanced and not frustrating to watch. Even though there are a lot of conflicts in the plot, the way both characters handle them with logic and clever thinking allows viewers to enjoy the drama without feeling overwhelmed.
Many characters in the drama disliked Bai Lu’s character, especially in the beginning. But despite all the hatred and traps set against her, she always had a clever strategy to counter everything. She truly embodied the role of a smart and sharp-minded woman.
