I watched this some time ago so I'm writing based on how I felt about this.

Plot :
The plot is from FL POV so you'll be be going through her journey of redemption and her righting her wrongs . FL is smart , too smart compared to others since she's a regressor. ML is smart too , most of the time it's a battle of wits between the 2 so it's really enjoyable. There are lot of regrets from FL on how she could have lived in her first life , we get a full closure on every front which was very satisfying.

Romance:
It's sooo good and soooooo slow. It's such a slow burn but it's worth the wait. Even when they're not officially together , whenever they're on screen together you'll feel that the chemistry is through the roof. ML is not green flag though , he's bit obsessive but the way their relationship developed was really good.

Incompetent ex-Empress

The female lead was an empress in her last life, and for becoming the empress. she must have gone through rigorous training, and study. I thought that she would be a master in these subjects, but why the hell is she so incompetent? I mean, how is this even possible? How the hell did she even become the empress? Even if someone conspires for the phoenix coronet, they must have talent but how did this useless girl take the position?

It's baffling, one would expect her to be a master strategist and adept ruler, given the prerequisites for such a role. However, her current incompetence raises questions about her past accomplishments. The narrative appears inconsistent; for someone who secured the coveted title, her lack of competence seems implausible. It challenges the credibility of the storyline; it left me pondering how this seemingly inept character managed to claim the throne.

Hooked right from the first episode !

For a long time time, I was looking for a historical c drama which make me fall in love with it in a instant.
And for sure, I fell in love with this series from the very first episode.
I am loving it.
And you will also found it intriguing if you are into historical twist and turns drama.

Intriguing story with a touch of romance & passionate kisses!

I liked this unique storyline where the FL goes back in time and tries to undo all her previous mistakes. And for some events, no matter how much she tries to change it, it still happens anyway. But with perseverance, she continues to work against fate and changes the outcome of the people she cares about.

Towards the end, it was no longer about her undoing her past misdeeds so the story fell flat for me. And when the ML and FL started to acknowledge their feelings for each other, it was very stingy on the romance but instead gives us some passionate kisses and even a bedroom scene before marriage.

Overall, it was entertaining if you don’t expect too much. Thankfully, the ending was an happy one.

Convoluted but engaging!

Since the presentation at the beginning of each episode is a short summary of the plot, I don't think it's spoiler when I say this drama involves a little bit of time travel. We have a leading lady who goes back in time, with her memory intact, for a re-do at family and court life. The drama, tho, starts the story like you are already in episode 5 and the viewer has to catch up. In my opinion this made the first third of the drama a convoluted, sometimes hard to follow but the characters were interesting enough to keep me engaged.

I appreciate leading lady it's smart and an equal talent as her male counterparts. This is important to portray because the world she involves herself in is controlled mainly by man, so in many ways she has the upper hand when they underestimate her and she can be sneaky without them realizing what hit them. Of course, except for leading man and a few of his friends. They see her for her smarts, beyond the beauty and noble title. Which is nice. That is not to say the drama has some red flag here and there but, if I am honest, I am on vacation right now and I just took this story for what it is: a fun period piece with endearing characters and some intense chemistry.

The latter two thirds of the story were far more interesting. We already know our players, where they stand and who they are trying to take down. Now it's a matter to see how this chess game will unfold, which personally I think it's the most fun for this kind of stories.

Overall, I really enjoyed this drama.

Similar Plot of Nirvana of Fire

Story of Kunning Palace, trailer was very eye catching and only if they could add more episodes. As expected, it’s remind me of Nirvana in fire. These are just nitpicks that I found kind of irritating me while I binge watched this drama. I love both actors and actresses though.

Problems I saw while watching the drama: Although I really like the two main leads, it was hard to watch because the writers couldn’t really pull the strings for FL to actually like him. I only see ML’s love for her. I also have more trouble of watching the way how they wrote Female Lead. Bai Lu acting pattern I’m starting to get tired of watching the directions of her character roles (maybe I watch a lot of her dramas, I see how each character manner/are almost same.) I was very irritated to hear her running movements are similar to her modern dramas. I found it annoying that she screams too much during the last episodes when she tries to reason with Main Lead about her feelings. (Directors failed at directing) (I haven’t read the novel so I don’t know if they changed anything but when it is adaptations it probably changed
) They really failed writing her character. As for Main Lead his acting was not as good as how he was in Love Between Fairy and Devil. His new role it was okay but improved just a little along the way. I think the best parts was him acting out as a lunatic was pretty good! He still had weird and funny facial expressions when he delivers his lines.

Overall I’d wish they had done an even more better job with the character of FL lead. It wasn’t explained in a good way. Other than other characters were great!

I’m dark and intense but will protect those I love

Personal opinion…any other face that played XW would have made me feel the relationship or romantic line was controlling and boarderline toxic. XW character is very intense, intelligent but possessive. He’s definitely not the type that has the mindset of “if you’re happy, I’ll be happy”. Realistically, keeping JXN near him is actually way more dangerous for her as XW is a strong strategist so would have enemies everywhere. It would have been nicer forJXN to leave and realise her love for him on her own and come back to him. I truely believe that “if it’s meant to be yours, it’ll come back to you.”

I felt they way they got together in the end didn’t feel like love but more like JXN felt too much debt to him. Almost like pity and very forced. I think over time she would have definitely loved him but as an audience, I didn’t get to see that transition.

Story is similar to “Love like the Galaxy” and some things were done better, like the way the main male lead was smart enough to get the revenge he so desperately wanted but also didn’t walk all over the FL trust to get there. He literally said and then showed that JXN was the most important thing to him when he stabbed his own hand. Actions do sure speak louder than words. On that note, there was also some things that wasn’t done as well like the aforementioned rushed/forced love. Give JXN some time to breath and process so she can make the decision herself to return to him. I think that the couple in “Love like the Galaxy” had a literal 10 year or so gap before they got back together. They were more mature and more trusting. As they say “Distance makes the heart grow fonder”.

But damn, ZLH face is just too gorgeous. He really played the role well and the man can cry like a god. His intensity, jaw clenches and beautiful lips makes it really hard to take your eyes away from the screen. He really didn’t have the air of “imperial teacher” though but considering the story line, it’s a smaller issue than the others. He really did not suit his “modern” day look either so whoever styled him for that did us a great injustice.

BL was great as always but her make up and hair didn’t make her stand out. The first episode when she was Queen, everything looked majestic. I guess that was the point but her “younger self” image really made her look older than when she was the Queen. The Princess really was beautiful and made BL look like an extra in some shots when they were together.

Would rewatch literally for only ZLH and BL but otherwise the story was average. The kiss scenes really felt like they would melt my screen so I’m so glad it passed review! BL always has such great kisses with all her ML but I would say ZLH takes the cake as the best kiss partner so far.

Bravo! Bravíssimo!

O roteiro é bom, os personagens bem construídos e o desenvolvimento do enredo bastante satisfatório.
Quando um drama tem capítulo especial, geralmente, é porque a finalização deixou a desejar, mas neste drama o especial é apenas um brinde da direção com cenas que não foram utilizadas na edição, pois em nada alteram o magnífico trabalho apresentado. Este drama, inicialmente, tinha a previsão de um número maior de capítulos, mas na edição ficaram apenas 38.
A direção conduziu o drama de maneira espetacular, as cenas eram bem acabadas, a coreografia das lutas impecáveis, edição sem erros graves, equilíbrio perfeito na emoção despertada nas cenas e cenário ou CGI maravilhosos. O efeito da borboleta utilizado no primeiro e no trigésimo oitavo capítulo é de uma sutileza indescritível. A ideia genial do diretor de refletir imagens no olho do cavalo e, também, nos olhos do casal protagonista, trouxe brilhantismo ao drama. A captação de cena de chuva no telhado no capítulo 6, remete a ideia de uma "tempestade" se aproximando para modificar os fatos. O diretor Chu Yui Bun costuma utilizar de recursos cativantes e prender a atenção logo nos primeiros capítulos, Neste drama ele tinha, além de seu talento indiscutível, um bom roteiro e um elenco de primeira grandeza. A finalização é bem elaborada e condizente com o desenrolar do trama.
O elenco esbanjou talento, não há nenhum personagem que não tenha sido muito bem representado. Bai Lu brilhou soberana do início ao fim, suas cenas foram viscerais. Senti cada emoção da personagem ao longo dos 38 capítulos, pude rir, chorar, sentir raiva, medo, desejo... A cena da morte de Fang Yin é de partir o coração, não só pelo seguimento da história, mas, principalmente, pela atuação de Bai Lu, seus olhos assumiram toda a dor da perda e depois todo rancor pelo assassino da amiga. Em várias cenas as palavras eram desnecessárias, pois os atores se esmeraram em incorporarem seus personagens.
O figurino é lindíssimo e a trilha sonora agradável.

Novità interessanti nella costruzione dei personaggi

C-drama a sfondo storico, a tema revenge and redemption, adattamento drammatico di un popolare romanzo web harem femminile "Kun Ning" (坤宁) di Shi Jing (时镜), con una novità interessante: i lettori hanno votato per il partner della protagonista.
Inizio dicendo che per me è stato uno show DIFFICILE all'inizio. L'inizio di questo show è stato incredibilmente lento e la traduzione italiana non adattata mi ha fatto soffrire, rallentando ancor più la comprensione.
Questa storia esplora i nessi causali tra passato, presente e futuro, abbracciando l'idea che, se solo sapessimo ciò che sappiamo ora, potremmo tornare indietro e fare ciò che avremmo dovuto/potuto ma non abbiamo fatto.
Inizia con una Ning'er che è già un personaggio pienamente realizzato ma non ancora rivelato: un' imperatrice subdola e capricciosa, eccessivamente autoindulgente, che viveva una vita malvagia e corrotta.
Il tropo narrativo è quello tanto caro ai cinesi di ritorno nel passato per cambiare il proprio destino ma la proposizione è stata molto diversa rispetto a quanto siamo abituati a vedere nel senso che effettivamente molti eventi rimangono immutabili e ai protagonisti tocca affrontare le sfide in modo diverso.
E' proprio questo l'aspetto affascinante di questo spettacolo: se il destino non cambia muta tu stesso il modo di affrontarlo e muterà anche il modo di subirlo.
La Protagonista è una giovane donna a cui è stato tolto tutto per una vendetta inutile di una concubina che però è stata la sua unica figura di riferimento (da qui sentimenti ambivalenti), arriva nella capitale piena di rancore e carica di propositi di riscatto a qualsiasi costo, decide di prendersi tutto anche quello che non le era destinato come risarcimento di quanto le era stato tolto. Si accorge però alla fine dei giochi che non ne valeva la pena e che non aveva davvero ottenuto nulla se non l'odio di tutti, che non aveva risolto i suoi problemi interiori e aveva calpestato anche coloro che l'avevano protetta e amata.
Anche se gli obiettivi di Ning'er cambiano, la sua natura innata rimane la stessa. Il passato è raccontato in flashback, poco prima che il momento si ripeta nel presente. Questo funziona per quanto riguarda i punti più dettagliati della trama, ma diluisce le storie dei personaggi e delle relazioni. Quindi, sebbene Bai Lu svolga il suo ruolo nel complesso, la narrazione frammentaria dei retroscena non cattura la profondità del rimpianto di Ning'er né le sfumature delle sue relazioni con alcuni dei personaggi principali.
Ha però la possibilità di rimediare, ed è bellissimo il modo in cui prende a cuore le sorti dei suoi sostenitori, soprattutto il suo migliore amico.
Altro elemento di novità è rappresentato dal ML, interpretato da Zhang Ling He, il suo personaggio : Xie Wei ,ci ho messo un po' per farmelo piacere ma quando l'ho compreso l'ho apprezzato più di chiunque altro, protagonista inclusa. E' un elemento di novità perché normalmente gli eruditi ma anche i protagonisti sono personaggi chiari, puri, corretti e moralmente integri. Qui il personaggio ha un indubbio spessore etico ma anche una grande complessità interiore e un temperamento collerico, aggressivo, a tratti violento. E' più un personaggio "latino" che un cinese da drama storico.
Però, sempre a differenza dei classici protagonisti cinesi, prenderà scelte estreme a tutela della donna che ama, a suo discapito, saprà prendere l'iniziativa sotto ogni punto di vista, dimostrandosi machiavellico e con infinite soluzioni. Un uomo intelligente sebbene eccentrico e fuori controllo.

La storia è molto interessante, la narrazione è ben orchestrata, nonostante un ritmo lento iniziale, mantiene alta la suspense e l’interesse dello spettatore attraverso colpi di scena e momenti emotivamente coinvolgenti.
Aiuta tantissimo il montaggio, molto ben studiato: alle scelte diverse nei percorsi di vita dei protagonisti vengono accostate scene , tramite flashback , compiute nella versione precedente che si vuole cambiare. Questo accostamento è un elemento di novità molto interessante.
Le scenografie sono molto buone, catturando l’opulenza e la grandiosità del palazzo imperiale, mentre la colonna sonora contribuisce a rafforzare l’atmosfera storica e a conferire intensità della serie.

Cosa non ho apprezzato: la protagonista principale, è intraprendente, intelligente, fiera e forte però sentimentalmente molto indecisa e tentennante (nonostante le sue ragione siano anche dettate da un malinteso che ha avuto con Xie Wei nella sua prima vita, legato al dono di un pugnale).
La costruzione del rapporto finale, quello definitivo, è stata relegata agli episodi finali ( mi riferisco davvero agli ultimi 3 episodi su 38 totali, nonostante il ML palesi il suo interesse quasi morboso nel 32°ep.) e fino al 38esimo, Ning'er sarà tentennante, procedendo a tentoni con slanci in avanti e passi indietro il giorno seguente.
La narrazione è carente nell'arco narrativo di Zhang Zhe. Per me, è la storia più cruciale dell'intera serie.
Ning'er era una persona egoista, così commossa da diventare altruista nei suoi confronti. Le loro emozioni erano così potenti che li hanno spinti entrambi fuori da loro stessi, verso un esito reciprocamente distruttivo. Purtroppo, a differenza del romanzo, ho letto, la loro relazione di riadattamento è superficiale e sfiora appena la superficie dell'affinità incompiuta tra loro. È un peccato che, invece di attenersi al romanzo, che meglio sviluppa questo arco narrativo, abbiano sprecato un sacco di tempo con le noiose e banali buffonate della perfida Consorte Shu. Il lato empatico di Xie Wei, presente nel romanzo, non è stato qui adeguatamente reso.
Tuttavia, nonostante la storia d'amore decolli alla fine, una comprensione reciproca si sviluppa gradualmente tra loro e la situazione diventa davvero bollente e passionale. Quando succede, la loro audace alchimia esplode in un modo che stabilisce un nuovo standard per le scene di intimità fisica in futuro.

L'inizio non è stato dei migliori, ho faticato per entrare nella storia, il ritmo è lento e risulta confusivo ricostruire la storia per la quantità dei personaggi proposti e continui flashback.
La recitazione dei personaggi è stata discontinua: Zhang ling he ha faticato per entrare nel personaggio, inizialmente l'ho trovato "legnoso" e innaturale, per rendere il dissidio interiore la sua espressività era troppo viziata da continue smorfie antiestetiche e innaturali, rendendolo poco convincente.
La protagonista , Bai Lu, molto intensa e convincente in alcune scene ma terribile in altre, la sua recitazione nel complesso per il ruolo da protagonista, è quella che mi ha convinto meno. Non cambia con gli episodi, mentre invece il ML, inizia a essere più naturale e convincente intorno al 26° (per me ha faticato ad entrare nel personaggio ma una volta entrato è stato intenso e performante).
Interessante che questo percorso di "risintonizzazione" del ML, finisca per rubare la scena alla "grande Bailu" e sia stato reso anche visivamente, iniziando a spogliarlo di quel trucco da vampiro ( smokey eye sui toni del rosso, cherry lip e pelle di porcellana ) per connotarlo con un maquillage più naturale.
Una coppia interessante che avrebbe dovuto trovare più spazio sulla scena è quella composta da Fang Yin e il Signor Lyu :c'era qualcosa nel suo desiderio di toglierle quel peso dalle spalle e condividere insieme i pesi della vita che l' ho trovato intrigante. Se gli autori ci avessero dato l'opportunità di vedere sbocciare questo rapporto, mostrandoci come si sarebbero potuti innamorare l'uno dell'altra e sarebbe stato interessante. Volevo vedere dove sarebbe andata a finire ma così non è stato.

Il tallone d'Achille di questo lavoro è la regia: mi è stato fatto notare da un'amica del settore (art director) l'abuso dell'effetto Bokeh e un abuso del grandangolo nei primi piani, o la desaturazione eccessiva dei colori.
"L’effetto desaturato cercava di mettere un pezza e stabilizzare la luce che non erano riusciti a controllare durante le riprese, 3 troupe di riprese non sono riuscite a coordinarsi sulla luce e per omogenizzare il colore e sono stati costretti a correggere in post desaturando.
L’evoluzione dei colori degli abiti segue l’evolvere della storia e l’animo dei personaggi.
C'è stato il solito problema con il tempo atmosferico, dato che cambia da pioggia a sole estivo nell’arco di pochi minuti e poca distanza. L’effetto bokeh (per coprire la scenografia forse non troppo meticolosa) rende le immagini fané e va in contrasto con la desaturazione (tipica dei moderni e dei luoghi freddi o asettici), creando caos e disturbo".
Personalmente ho trovato interessanti alcune inquadrature in certi momenti che davano suggerimenti sui personaggi e sulla loro natura, arricchendo visivamente la narrazione.
Ho trovato nauseanti, per fortuna sono poche, le inquadrature dal basso e gli aloni chiari sul volto dei personaggi e ai margini della scena nelle scene di avvicinamento sentimentale.
I combattimenti sono spesso montati con la velocità a 1,5x per movimentare le scene d'azione ma l'eccesso di velocità e i colpi degli attori girati in aria mentre sospesi su un filo arrivano orizzontalmente mi son sembrati più errori che effetti scenici di pregio visivo. E dire che due di questi registi hanno girato lavori di pregio come Blossoms in adversity o Moonlight mystique, Starry Love, Blue Whisper e the Long Ballad


La narrazione mi ha lasciato vagamente insoddisfatta: come se avessi visto solo la versione riassuntiva di una storia che aveva molta più profondità, sfumature e sostanza di quanto il drama riuscisse a trasmettere.
Non hanno compreso quali archi narrativi avrebbero dovuto avere più peso e la regia ha una sfortunata propensione per luci troppo accese e uno stile di ripresa un po' disordinato. I valori di produzione sono, nella migliore delle ipotesi, mediocri. Questa è una storia che aveva così tanto potenziale che meritava di essere nelle mani registi migliori e di un budget più consistente (forse tutto speso per assoldare Bailu & company). Attori con più esperienza non avrebbero guastato nonostante Zhang Ling He si dimostri un buon interprete con ampi margini di miglioramento. Wang Xing Hue si dimostra sul pezzo e affidabile, come sempre, Liu Xie Ning a me che l'ho seguita in vari lavori, è piaciuta più di Bailu, meriterebbe senz'altro un'occasione da protagonista.
In conclusione "Story of the Kunning Palace" è una serie consigliata a chi ama i drammi a sfondo storico con una storia oscura e avvincente di intrighi, tradimenti, vendetta e redenzione, con personaggi sfaccettati e una trama avvincente ma sarebbe stata meglio con recitazioni più solide e meno discontinue e una regia più curata,
