Excellent drama. I don't know why i put it off so long.

This is my favorite work Zhang Ling He has starred in. I didn't care for the plots in "Princess royal" and "My journey to you". But story of Kunning palace is awesome. In fact, all the actors were awesome in this drama.
The plot is nothing we haven't seen before, but what makes it riveting is the character's and seeing their internal frustrations.
And omg, was i blessed with so many hot kissing scenes towards the end lol.
I only took off .5 rating because the xue family plot was getting annoying at the end. I think they could've made it like 2-4 episodes shorter between dragging on the main enemy and female lead's indecisiveness.

Story of the Ages

Insane palace politics with high stakes and a slow burn that absolutely slow burned but when it started to burn, it was like a raging inferno. Majestic OSTs paired with masterful storytelling of reincarnation, this is fight to take back one's own destiny.

Ning is just trying to redeem herself and get away from the morbid drama that caused the downfall of her last life, yet she is too smart and headstrong to stay out of it. She's an imperfect FL who's resentful, selfish, and ambitious but you can't help but root for her. It makes sense why everyone keeps falling for her because she's being her authentic self.

Here comes the star of the show, the batshit insane son of a bitch, Xi Wei. Never have I met such an unhinged and cunning character AND he's the ML. I love it. To me, it was so obvious that he had feelings for her from the beginning. He is definitely the fall first and harder, and never let go type. He just makes sense with Ning. Their insanity matches.

A breathtaking tale of revenge and redemption, not one episode was boring. While the romance was slow to develop, it made sense since both characters are too crafty to fall head in first. But believe me, once they (more so Xi Wei) took that first step, they dove off that cliff. Just craziness all around, one of my favorite dramas of all time.

this drama is all worth your time . Its a rollercoaster of emotions.

the script, directing ,acting of this drama is amazing ,its a piece of art overall. the male lead acting was very good ,you could feel all the emotions from his acting specially in the last 10 episode .the story is full of twist .you will never feel bored . a minus in this drama is the FL even after reincarnation she is a little confused and very hesitant towards the ml. I understand why she was hesitant the first 20 episodes but after that she started to act a little too confusing (?), and frustating.BUT overall i have never watch a drama like this .I recommend this to everyone including the one that watches rom com.

Watch it for the love of Zhang Linghe if nothing else

Let me first write why everyone should watch the drama: Zhang Linghe looks absolutely gorgeous as angsty angry ML.
I'm not a fan of Bai lu but she acted so well. Their relationship will forever be iconic.

The story was fast paced unlike most of c-dramas (I'm used to watching k-dramas so no offense here to c-drama lovers as I'm used to series ending around 16 episodes).

The bad parts: badly edited and directed. It gets confusing at times. wasted enough time on Consort Shu character which was not necessary.

All in all this drama is a treat and one of the best to come out in recent years. A must watch.

So much scheming and plotting...will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat <3

I initially started watching this drama solely because of Zhang Linghe and Bai Lu, but also because the plot was super interesting to me. This drama definitely did not disappoint in terms of the plot/overall story! It had so many twists and turns, and is definitely a pretty intense watch! Bai Lu's character, Jiang Xuening, did in fact cause me so much stress at times! But she is also super smart and cunning! Like when she decided to go and talk to Xie Wei (ZLH's character) when it was snowing??? GIRL NO DON'T DO IT! She is also such a strong female lead and I love seeing that the female leads are getting their chance to shine as well. Xie Wei is definitely a character who is morally ambiguous and unhinged, but he is also very calculating. His schemes and plans are always so well-thought out and elaborate. Every twist and turn in this drama had me on the edge of my seat! This entire drama was so incredibly complex, and the storyline was so intricate! I kind of liked that the male lead in this wasn't your typical drama lead, as he leaned towards more morally ambiguous than anything else. Overall, this drama was absolutely incredible from start to finish, and I do recommend it!

I greatly enjoyed this drama. I loved the characters, the direction, and the overall execution, though I did feel that certain aspects of the adaptation were influenced by external constraints, which affected how closely it aligned with the original material.

The original source story is a rebirth-based narrative centered on second chances and reflection on past choices, with a strong emotional focus on personal growth and “what could have been” themes. Because of this, I felt the original version carried a particularly poignant emotional tone.

Overall, while I still appreciated the drama on its own terms, I found the original story to have a stronger emotional impact in comparison.

Mixed Feelings

I'm at a loss to explain it but I want to express my opinion. the overall story of this drama is mixed, it can be either framed or trapped, and it has many twists and turns but a happy ending. because this drama based on a novel has a dark story. I don't think it's a wuxia(?) but a political conflict without any spirituality.
But I hope BL and ZLH can act together again in a wuxia/xianxia/xuanhuan drama, I love their chemistry.

and I'm here to express my frustration, I commented on this SOKP page they attacked me, then I better delete my comment. what's wrong with the fans of this SOKP drama attacking me so much? is it because this SOKP drama is overrated? this makes me afraid to comment again and the fans of this SOKP drama are so terrible.

even though my favorites are ZLH and BL but why are SOKP drama fans so horrible?

This was a slow start drama that really takes a while to build up (with annoying flashbacks every two scenes and internal monologues galore), but overall, it had interesting characters and a decent storyline. I had doubts about both the ML and FL at first, but I ended up liking both of them in the end. If you're like me and like morally grey characters, you'll probably also like the ML, who is, honestly, pretty unhinged (pls get this man a therapist).

The romance part was more of an aside for me, as I wasn't really buying it between the ML and FL. The side characters were constantly mentioning how the ML and FL acted differently towards the other and how they must love the other, that the whole thing just felt forced, as if they were trying to convince the audience of this fact rather than letting their actions speak for themselves.

I probably wouldn't ever rewatch this but this was an enjoyable drama. If you like palace politics, you'll probably like this as well! Nice OST, good acting, and satisfying ending.
