Dull and stiff

I had to drop it in the end, I was just so bored. The characters were so hard to like, and they had zero chemistry. Takara was actually the more likeable one and he had no expression at all.

I get that they were trying to portray the awkwardness of a first love, and the story itself had potential, but they didn't manage it, in my opinion.
And what's with the weird filters?? Especially on Amagi.

It's not something I'd recommend to anyone looking for something to enjoy and become absorbed in, but it seems to appeal to people who like fluffy (in this case nothingy) romance.

Lovely BL to Rewatch

In short, I 💗 the story, acting, and settings so much. I love TakaraAmagi! I hope we get a season 2… I rewatch this just like I rewatch Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice But to Kiss, My Beautiful Man (especially Eternal), and My Personal Weatherman (something endearing about Japanese BLs). But this is my #1🫶🏽. Amagi is cute and so much fun to watch. He is so endearing to me. And Takara is a handsome green flag all the way. I love Katori and Tanaka as supports— they really add to the story. I want to see a season 2 where the two are in university or in jobs and still together and learning how to be in a relationship together. 💗💗💗 I hope the producers decide to gift us with Season 2…and maybe 3? 😉🥰🫰🏾

Kuudere Final Boss

Discovered this series after seeing a clip of it in a YouTube short, where I thought to myself "that wig looks pretty funny", and happily added it to my planned to watch list.

I didn't know much about this show ahead of time, but I thought it was going to at least be a little more enjoyable than this.
Takara-Kun to Amagi-Kun is presented as a cute series about an innocent romance between two high school boys who are trying to keep their relationship secret. However, upon watching it, I didn't quite get that same sweet impression.

The story felt very sparse, with no serious structure—a lot of moments felt kind of randomly placed. I felt like a lot of the things that happened throughout just kind of ended up meaning next to nothing for the development of the story, and I couldn't really pinpoint whenever a scene was major to the plot or not.

The main characters, Takara and Amagi, are a super awkward and angsty couple who I felt had barely any chemistry the entire time—and it never really got better as the season went on. The acting was okay I guess, but both Takara and Amagi were characterized in ways that made them just sort of unlikeable to me. Amagi is a hyper-cute character that feels really fake and one-dimensional (which his shoehorned-in traumatic childhood backstory fails to help with at all). He felt more like a person pretending to be an anime character more than a real teenager. As for Takara, he was a little more bareable, but not by much. He is a mega kuudere type who fails to show any emotion throughout the entire show, except for a couple tiny smiles towards Amagi as time goes on. I will say, I think the actor played him as decently as he could of, but the character is just so strange that I don't really care. Takara could have been a really good opportunity for the show-runners to write in some good character development, but Takara basically never changes. Towards the end, he starts to say more bold things, but he still keeps the same lifeless demeanour. The only character I genuinely liked in the show was Katori (the glasses guy). He was pretty funny and was very refreshing to see amidst the blunders of every other character.

Overall, this was a little below average mid-levels, and I honestly was getting bored in the second half. At least the ending was happy I guess, but still. Very cringey and jam-packed with lame tropes.

3.5/10.

I finished it just to see Tanaka and Katori scenes.

Wouldn't it be better if the main leads were Komiya Rio (Tanaka) and Suzuke Kosuke (Katori)? They have much more appealing visuals than the real main leads. I almost dropped this at episode 2 but since this is just a short series, I finished it. Thankfully, the late half of the series gives more scenes to Tanaka and Katori.

Also, the attitude/personality of both main characters does not fit for a main role truthfully. It gives a corny romantic relationship and a lackluster storyline.

Overall, this series is.... Mehhh. Empty. No impact.

Japanese manga codes live

One thing is certain, I do not like this japanese concept of kawai. In my book, it is just the utmost cringy second hand embarrassment!

Takara and Amagi is only that: a cool as cucumber taciturn Takara, always walking around with his hands in his pockets falls for "kawai" Amagi in his oversized clothes and brimming with childlike enthusiasm both hiding mountain size of insecurities. They are both high school students and while Amagi is worried that Takumi will loose friends because of him, Takumi does not want anyone to know they are dating because Amagi is just too cute.

Even though the drama talks about some serious issues, I almost did not finish it because of the superficial esthetics which does not sit well with me. The first is the kawai behaviour: when an 18yr old goes skipping around and flailing his arms and being a 5yr old girl. The other stems from that one: the height and build difference. And that is so much japanese yaoi mangas concept: seme and uke, a man and a woman. Here it is sometimes hinted to be even worse: a man and a child: I chose to consider it as a father-son relationship. There was even a scene where Amaki transformed into a child! Disturbing, to say the least!

We do not get to know much about the boys outside the school, especially Takara. Amagi is explained a bit more since it was obvious that he is hiding something behind his cheerful disposition: his thirst for love and acceptance. And even though Takara repeatedly tells him he likes him, Amagi has trouble believing him. Amagi started dating Takara because he asked him and not because he liked him more than anyone else. His concept of dating was that of a 10 year old girl (i.e. holding hands and eating ice cream in the park!) so when Takara tried to kiss him, he was very surprised and even more uncomfortable with it. He eventually did fall for him really but his insecurities kicked in every time Takara did or said something. Takara was like a rock, solid and just as expressive, speaking in short sentences and always calm.

While the main pair was rather bland and annoying, I finished watching this because of their best friends: actually I want a series only featuring them! They were fun, deadpan and realistic while Takara and Amagi were in the realm of a fairy tale.

The production is the usual japanese fare: muted colours in the shades of blue, a bit fuzzy and very soft cinematography. Music, nothing special.

Watch this if you run out of BLs to watch, just like I did! lol

This is such an adorable slice-of-life series! It’s packed with sweet and funny moments, along with heartfelt messages about two teens struggling to share their feelings for each other. I really enjoyed the story, the chemistry, and how the characters interact. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re in the mood for something light and relaxing.

Another Top 5

It was super cute, refreshing, and funny. There were some sad parts with Amagi. He was so self-conscious, but you could feel the little fella trying his best. Amagi is so adorable too!! Takara had his dorky moments as well. There were elements of anime in there. Those parts cracked me up.
I loved that the story was just normal teen coming of age stuff, not defined by being gay. It was Takara and Amagi suddenly trying out a relationship and become each other's person. Freaking cute! I really like how they dealt with issues. They talked about sex, being out and open, and the thing I liked the most is they are two very different people, yet they found to really like each other and figure out how to be with each other anyway.

It's one of my comfort series. Give it a try, it might be a comfort for you too. ^-^

Initial thoughts turned into dropping the show

The first episode is confusing and a part of it is due to the editing. So often times I’m trying to figure out if what I am watching is happening present day or in the past. The way to tell is through character interactions and dialogue. You know it’s the past playing out because the 2 leads aren’t too familiar with each other yet versus the present day where there is clearly tension and history between the two we aren’t privy to yet. There isn’t noticeable visual cues that help distinguish the timelines. But other than that I’m still curious to continue on because I want to know how they got to the point of tears and angst. As for the leads, Amagi is very cute and adorable almost to the threshold where I’m like….hmmm I don’t know about this because he puts on the cuteness in an overtly exaggerated way. And as expected Takara fulfills the role of the popular guy in school pretending to be aloof and uninterested but who panics inside with how cute Amagi is. I don’t know how they’ll develop this in just 8 episodes but it’s short and something I can easily watch through as new episodes come out.

Update: I watched up until episode 3 and I’m on the fence about whether or not I want to continue with this series. I don’t think it’s a bad drama. It’s just that I’m not invested enough in the characters. They don’t seem real to me but caricatures being played out. It doesn’t help that the hair/wig? and make up really exemplifies that. It’s just not for me. I couldn’t help but think that I would’ve preferred this story animated. I think it would’ve lended itself better in that medium.
