Simply horrible FL

I am dropping this after the first segment because I have never EVER seen a fl who is more abhorrent in literally any drama I’ve watched. She is completely self obsessed and so utterly cruel constantly to the ml, who bows his head, dutifully taking her abusive tirades and then quietly goes about trying harder to make her happy. She actually makes him sell her food at the market (as well as his own) while she sits reading a book ignoring him, and there’s never a “thank you” or any appreciation shown, just a shoulder shrug.

So, just wanting to give you fair warning, if this kind of thing bugs you like it does me, maybe skip this one lol. Maybe I should press on and she will be better, but honestly she’s SO bad I don’t even WANT a happy ending for her. I want the sweet boy to run away fast and find someone who will cherish him, not abuse him. Anyway, rant over. Lol, I hope this helped a little.

Just Beautiful

I don't usually cry while watching shows but here I am, a blubbering mess. The best way to enjoy this show is to watch one episode at a time over several weeks. It took me two months to finish. It would have been too heavy otherwise.

Even if the first few episodes are a little boring, it will grow on you over time. The only negative point I can think of is the relatively short screentime of PBG. It honestly felt more like a special appearance than a lead kind of role even though he was present throughout the series. That said, each member of the cast did a phenomenal job, especially the older version leads.

The only way to describe the drama was that it is beautiful. No matter which stage of life you are in, you'll find something to relate with. I'm glad I watched it. I will never watch it again but I will treasure the memories and the life lessons I've learned from it.

A Journey Through Seasons, Generations, and Healing

This review is more of an analysis and spoilers, haha I watched this while it was airing, and wrote this in my document that I would like to share now!

WLGYT is not your typical drama that simply explains life’s lessons; instead, it offers a 𝙙𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙫𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙖𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 through detailed experiences and perspectives as if the 𝙙𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙖 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 (hence, "dedicated to you" message on the poster. Fun fact: The title, "When Life gives you Tangerines", is a Jeju language verb for "𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙠 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠."

🍊Tangerines grow in a specific season, mirroring the drama’s 4-volume structure: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. Like the fruit maturing, the characters mature alongside the changing seasons of life.

𝗩𝗢𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗘 𝟭: 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴🌷- A mother who bends so her daughter could fly and the blossoming love between a young couple. [Tags: Dreams, romantic love]
𝗩𝗢𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗘 𝟮 : 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿🏖️- I’d swim oceans, cross deserts, walk through fire, and against the whole world—just to be with you. [Tags: Social pressures, family expectations, personal sacrifices, relationship challenges & ambitions].
𝗩𝗢𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗘 𝟯: 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗻🍂- Parents are like the sun. We complain about the heat, unaware that without them, we'd be cold and lost. [Tags: Parenthood, sacrifice, unspoken love, generational differences, romantic love, family bonds & unspoken love].
𝗩𝗢𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗘 𝟰: 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿❄️ - The body may rest, but the soul lingers—in voices remembered, in rooms once shared, in hearts never the same. [Tags: Aging, life reflection, legacy & eternal love.]

𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲:
The drama presents two POVs—starting with Ae-Sun, the mother, and gradually transitioning to her daughter, Geum Myeong, as the story unfolds. Initially, the narrative can be a bit confusing, particularly because the same actress, IU, portrays both the young Ae-Sun and her daughter. Not to mention, the transition between the past and present.

Though they are confusing, and I have to admit, I was going to drop it, but later on, I realised it actually enhances the emotional depth of the drama, weaving the two timelines together in a way that reflects how 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙡𝙮 𝙨𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩. The past sometimes shapes the future. Furthermore, these creative choices introduce a level of complexity and continuity to the story, emphasising the generational bond and the passage of time, as we see the challenges faced by each character in the drama from both the characters' own perspectives.

My personal favourite is Volume 3, where the perspective from Ae-Sun shifts to Geum Myeong, since I was born into a similar generation as Geum Myeong, relating to her more. Meanwhile, other volumes remind me of my parents' life stories. Regardless of which volumes, I cried my heart out ಥ_ಥ

‼️Only doing the characters that impact me the most.
➔ 𝗔𝗲-𝗦𝘂𝗻🌻: She was a passionate, rebellious young woman with dreams bigger than her time allowed. Her character was all shaped by her mother, Gwang Rye, who folded her wings so Ae-Sun could learn how to fly. As Ae-Sun grew up, she struggled with societal expectations and sacrificed her own desires for the sake of family.
➔ 𝗚𝘄𝗮𝗻-𝗦𝗶𝗸🌲: A green forest. He isn’t poetic or expressive with words, but his 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙢𝙚𝙨. His love (whether romantic or familial) is steady, silent, and self-sacrificing—symbolising the kind of care that’s often overlooked but unwavering.
➔ 𝗔𝗲-𝗦𝘂𝗻'𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗚𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝘆𝗲💎: A stern, traditional mother shaped by war, poverty, and sacrifice. She’s strict and emotionally distant, but beneath her harshness is a deep love that she struggles to express. She believes survival and stability matter more than personal desires. Her story reveals 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙚𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙜𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜, which Ae-Sun embodied later on as Ae-Sun became a mother on her own.

➔ 𝗔𝗲-𝗦𝘂𝗻'𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝘆𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗴🌼: She was born in a different era with new freedoms but also new pressures. Just like how Gwang Rye shaped Ae-Sun, Geom Myeong is shaped by both admiration and frustration toward her mother. Her journey explores first love struggles, identity, independence, parenthood, and generational healing.
➔ 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝘆𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗴'𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲, 𝗬𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝗼𝗺💔: On the surface, Yeong Beom is literally the carbon copy of Gwan Sik. However, while Gwan-sik stood firm and ran toward Ae-Sun even when the world tried to tear them apart, Yeong Beom hesitated and didn't do the same to Geom Myeong. He let go when things became difficult. He lacked that same courage when 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙚. That’s why he couldn’t be the endgame. In the end, love isn't just about compatibility—it’s about showing up, especially when it’s hardest to do so.

Time waits for no one

“When Life Gives You Tangerines” is a beautiful reminder that time waits for no one. The drama takes us back to the innocence of youth, where laughter, friendships, and first love feel endless — yet life slowly pulls the characters forward, changing them in ways they can’t control. What makes it touching is the way it captures fleeting moments that seem ordinary at the time, but unforgettable when looked back on. The nostalgic village setting enhances the sense of warmth and longing, making us reflect on our own memories and how quickly they slip away. It’s a bittersweet story — tender, heartwarming, and sometimes heartbreaking — showing that even though people may grow apart, the feelings we carry from those youthful days remain timeless. A must-watch if you enjoy reflective dramas about growing up and the passage of time.

An Emotional Journey: More Than Just a Romance Kdrama

I initially thought this was just about their romance, and the external issues they had to overcome together—like your typical romantic kdramas. I didn't expect to watch their entire life unfold, but not that I'm complaining. The only thing I wasn't prepared for was the number of times I bawled my eyes out. I got attached to the characters so quickly, probably because I loved the cast in the first place. They portrayed their characters so well! I never thought I'd get so attached to a fictional family. I felt hopeless, heartbroken, hopeful, angry, sad, happy, and excited while watching this KDrama. I think it was a good thing they released the episodes at different times because I would've felt overwhelmed if I binge-watched everything in one sitting. I LOVE THIS SM!

A drama that reshapes your heart

I’ve watched over a hundred dramas, but very few have left me speechless the way When Life Gives You Tangerines did. To me, this wasn’t just a drama. It was a quiet, devastating, and deeply human masterpiece. A reminder of what it means to endure, to live, and most of all… to love.

Some may call it overrated, and at first those comments surprised me. But I realized this story speaks loudest to those who’ve faced life’s weight and struggled with the burdens of family, poverty, dreams deferred, and grief that lingers for decades. If you’re at a different stage in life, maybe it won’t land the same. And don't get me wrong, that's completely fine and normal. But for me, this story felt like home... warm, flawed, messy, heartbreaking, and unforgettable.

The character of Gwangsik alone raised my standards for men to the stratosphere. I’m not even sure someone like him could exist in real life. A man who lived every breath for the people he loved, who gave everything without ever asking for anything back. His quiet sacrifices, his constant presence, his gentle strength... He left an imprint on every soul around him, and on mine. Watching him love Aesun from childhood to his last breath was a devotion in its purest form.

And then there’s Aesun, never letting the world dim her. She stayed vibrant, dream-filled, stubborn, and radiant, even through loss. She reminded me that it's never too late to chase what matters to you, even at 70, even when your world has already broken apart once, twice, maybe more.

This drama does jump across timelines, from 1997 to 2004 and beyond, and while that might seem confusing at first, every puzzle piece clicks into place eventually. Each moment, no matter how small, ends up meaning something.

The cinematography is quiet and poetic, washed in nostalgic tones that make it feel like a memory. And the storytelling is patient. You’re not bombarded with twists or dramatics. It’s subtle, and yet it guts you. Every character, even those with just a few minutes of screen time, had depth, pain, and dreams.

The most unforgettable line came from Gwangsik, passed down to his daughter. A line that became the emotional anchor of the whole show: “If you can’t, just back down. We’re always here for you.” So simple, yet so healing. Painful even. I wish everyone in the world could have a parent like him.

And I can’t leave this without mentioning the OST. It’s honestly one of my favorite parts of the entire experience. The opening song brought Jeju to life, not just with the music, but with those dreamy animated scenes that set the mood before each episode even began. And “Midnight Walk” by d.ear… that one stayed with me. It’s a song I keep returning to when I need to slow down and breathe.

If I could rate this drama more than 10/10, I would. This isn’t just one of my favorites, but one of the most important stories I’ve ever watched.

There's not much to say, really

I finally finished the best show on MDL at the moment and I don't know what to say. All that could be said has already been said. This show took dramaland by storm and I think it was fair. It feels like old-school kdramas like Reply 1988 but sort of more angsty. It was beautiful and frustrating, sad and funny just as life would be. The production quality and acting are immaculate. The whole cast and crew clearly put their all into making this the perfect project and there isn't anything to add besides just saying: they all did amazing. The show looks and feels cinematic.

Plot: The whole point of this show is to shed light on the lives of ordinary people in order to highlight their extraordinariness. So naturally, it had parts that frustrated as well as parts that inspired. I tried my best not to get mad at the characters for their immaturities because while other shows' immature characters feel like flaws in the narrative, the immature and petulant behavior of the characters here felt like rites of growing up. Their mistakes felt like unavoidable twists of fate, and their broken connections were...well, that's just life! I find it very hard to judge this show for any choice it made narratively because everything seemed too true to life and a part of the realism of it! So yeah! The show gets away by virtue of being too realistic!
That said, I preferred the parents' plotline to their daughter's and the later episodes, because she was just too frustrating and unfair at times. I get that she had it hard too but she just nagged way too much! It was sort of embarrassing and painful to watch her feel inferior to the entitled rich people when those rich people were so pathetic and unworthy. But again...that's true to life! The parents, on the other hand, were so pitiful, you just can't help but root for them. Also that part has romance and family drama and a historical setting...it just hit different!

Acting: I don't wanna add much here: IU was great, I always knew she was great. Yeon Hye Ran deserves ALL the awards and Park Bo Gum was so good here, he single-handedly pushed me from holding massive contempt towards him to actually enjoying his presence. So much so I was upset when he was absent from an episode. Everyone else was equally great; the whole cast was amazing, really.

Music: This show also had perfect music. The theme song (which is called Spring, btw, you're welcome!) was so beautiful and nostalgic that I couldn't bear to skip the intro. The rest, I don't really remember, but it was mostly old Korean music and IU, so it was great.

Production: I wonder what the budget was because everything production-wise was so perfect and spot-on that you don't even think about it. It all just feels real.

Rewatch value: I don't think so! I will end up crying way too much and I feel all out of tears!

Overall: It's great! Go watch it!

An amazing drama, not to be missed!

This drama is far different from the usual storylines. After watching a few episodes you become so familar with the depth of the characters that as susequent episodes unfold their story becomes so real that it feels like you personally know them, you develop a strong bond with them. The acting is extraordinary! All four actors playing the main couple gives amazing heartfelt, emotional performances that you form a strong bond with them. The story tells of unimaginable hardship, the deepest love you could ever experience, tragedy, strength, perserversnce, determination, loyalty, devotion and human dignity. There is no doubt that this beautifully filmed, spectacularly acted, heartwrencing love story will certainly garner numerous awards, high praise and millions of viewers.

“Beautiful, but it didn’t fully click for me”

I can see why a lot of people love it but for me it landed somewhere in the middle.

The biggest strengths are the acting, the visuals and the overall nostalgic vibe. The early episodes especially were quite touching and I appreciated the focus on family, quiet love and everyday struggles. You can really feel the effort that went into the production from the soundtrack to the detailed sets.

The drama started to lose me as it went on. The pacing felt uneven, the timeline jumps were sometimes confusing and the story didn’t always feel focused. While the themes were meaningful the execution didn’t fully work for me especially in the second half which felt longer and less engaging than it needed to be.

Overall, it’s not a bad drama but just not one that fully clicked for me. I can see it resonating more with viewers who enjoy slow, reflective, slice of life stories but if you’re expecting something more tightly structured it might feel a bit underwhelming.

Good Enough

Korean Drama 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' is the story of a family throughout the decades.

The start of the drama is a bit rocky, but it quickly settles into the story. The plot is filled with emotional scenes that are the product of the slice of life drama and not a melodramatic try hard, which makes it even more impactful. Each episode was also interesting till the very final and the timeline, with its back and forths, was nicely handled and didn't get confusing.

Finally, the settings were great and the period part of the drama was masterfully presented. Moreover, the performances of the cast were excellent.

So, overall, nine out of ten.

First love is never just a memory

Only four episodes in, and it's already delivering all the feels. Here’s a quick dive into what makes it worth watching so far....

K-dramas have a way of capturing deep emotions, and this is no exception. This drama takes us on a journey through time, from the 1960s to the present day. It tells the story of a young girl who faces rejection from her father’s family and longs to live with her mother, a hardworking haenyeo (female diver). Despite the hardships she endures, one person remains by her side—the male lead. From childhood, he quietly supports and protects her, making their bond genuinely heartwarming and totally unforgettable.

Their love story is filled with struggles. Although they care deeply for each other, family opposition and societal expectations keep them apart. The male lead’s family disapproves of her background, while she dreams of leaving her small town to become a poet. A heartfelt moment in a flower field marks their first kiss, but their happiness is short-lived. When they try to run away together, reality forces them back home, leading to heartbreak. In a painful twist, she is pressured into an arranged marriage, while he desperately pleads for her to choose him instead.

One of the most impactful scenes happens in the same flower field where they first kissed. She forces herself to push him away, telling him to leave so she can live her life. But when she throws away the gold ring he offers, she later regrets it, desperately searching for it in the dirt. Eventually, she refuses to let others control her fate. In a dramatic moment, she runs through the rain to stop him from leaving. As she calls out his name from the docks, he jumps into the sea and swims back to her, an absolute cinematic serve of love and devotion.

The story continues as they navigate married life, facing new challenges. Living with his family becomes unbearable, leading them to leave and start fresh, despite financial hardships. However, their love remains strong. In a standout scene, when she discovers that her husband’s abusive boss is the same man she almost married, she confronts him head-on—despite being pregnant—showing the fierce determination that has always defined her. The present-day storyline shifts focus to their daughter, revealing how the past shapes her own choices.

The title, When Life Gives You Tangerines, carries deep symbolism. Just as tangerine trees continue to bear fruit despite rough conditions (as shown in the first episode), the female lead overcomes obstacles and finds her own happiness. The drama beautifully captures the themes of love, sacrifice, and self-discovery, making it an emotional rollercoaster. With its heartfelt storytelling, it’s already shaping up to be one of the most unforgettable K-dramas of the year.

Despite being a 16-episode drama, the first four episodes already feel like a complete story on their own, with the fourth episode’s ending feeling like a 'fitting ending'. This makes me even more excited to see what’s next: will the focus stay on the love story between the two leads, or will it shift more toward their daughter’s journey? Either way, the next episodes are bound to bring even more surprises.

"First love is never just a memory. It is a lesson, a longing, and a warmth that never truly fades." ❤︎
