An absolute gem!
Everyting is perfect in this series. On top of coherent story line, fast paced, action pacted, superb cinematography and great dark mood and overall aesthetics, one has the benefit, once again, to watch the Chinese actor at work. Actor, like in singular, like in type of actor. I am in awe seeing again and again, in this series and in others I watched online, how Chinese actors make true of the saying "there are no small parts; only actors". Indeed. no small parts and no small actors here ... Cudos! Was this review helpful to you?

It seems much ado about nothing and kind of R&J to me.
[I respect other reviewers and their individual choices. There are plenty of dramas out there to suit every taste. Direct your support or lack of to the drama itself. Not personal attackers. We review. We do not attack. Thank you. Reserve your opinions for your reviews and not for the reviewer who is responding to the drama itself and not to other external aspects. I am responding to this drama that I have watched and I am not personally attacking any actor or actress in real life. After all, I do not know them at all and have nothing against them. No hate on them at all! It is all based on this particular drama only/ this particular reel life only.]I was kind of shocked by how cutesy and high-pitched the FL's voice was in another famous series (which made me feel rather repulsed then) and so, I was quite skeptical about this drama. Nonetheless, I just watched "Kunning Palace" and loved the ML as Xie Wei/ Xie Ju An in it and so, I thought "let's go!".
These are my honest thoughts about this particular drama, and I have nothing against any actor or actress in real life.
Upon starting the very 1st episode, it was pleasant to see that FL had a different sort of role in this drama and I thought "seems good". The colour of the drama and the production and costumes ... looked high class and polished. After watching the action-packed 1st episode, I looked forward to the 2nd episode. All seemed quite great and I was quite intrigued.
However, as I continued watching, I found myself feeling less intrigued and more bemused and even bored by the shenanigans of the deadly spies... everything seemed to be going round in circles and was even rather confusing to me. The four factions (can I call them 'factions') on Wu Feng's side as well as on Gong's side were perplexing and rather boring. My thoughts were "this is starting to feel sort of like R&J where we have 2 feuding factions who are just feuding and feuding and much ado about nothing". I felt that there was a lot of posturing going on but nothing much worthy was going on.
Currently, I am in two minds about this drama - to continue or to drop. And so, it is "On-Hold" at the moment. While I recognise that this production is a good one and big budget with good actors and actresses, it did not make me feel invested and keen. It also did not make me feel the urge to continue watching to find out how things would pan out.
Let me see how I should proceed from here ;o)

A Mixture of Darkness and Comedy
This drama gives the vibe of a suspense drama yet manage to mix it with a light comedy through the role of the Eldest Sister. At first she looked familiar but I couldn't pinpoint where I saw her before until Ep.5. She was one of the guest in Keep Running. Oh my goshhhh, no wonder...LOL.I have tried to watch Esther Yu's works but it failed to keep me completing the dramas as most of her roles were not my cup of tea. Sometimes I think she only managed to play the role of bubbly-pretty, and somehow less wise girl. But, this time she captivates me through her roles and I think I portrays it pretty well.
Zhang Ling He, well, my first time watching his work and I think I will put him on my watch list. His role is in this drama induces women's protective nature. A nice and honest guy with strengths and vulnerabilities.

Mixed feelings...
My first impression is that there are 2 main appeals to this drama. The first is that people have been wanting to see this CP since LBFAD. The second is that people are always criticizing Yu Shuxin only playing cutesy, babyish characters and this was her chance to add something more serious to her portfolio. So far, neither box is really ticked for me. These two had more chemistry in LBFAD and I wasn't even rooting for them to end up together in that show.As for Yu Shuxin, her characters never annoyed me that much because I feel that she is a naturally bubbly person off camera. That is why seeing her play this stoic, dull person it looks like it is physically hurting her to play this character. To me Yun Wei Shan just looks and acts emotionally constipated. YS shines in her comedic roles and this boring character is just doing nothing for me. She did kill the fighting scenes though, especially the mud scene. That was badass.
As for Zhange Linghe, I find him to be just the opposite of YS. He shines in more serious, emotionally tormented roles. The Story of Kunning Palace is easily one his best roles to date in my opinion. He's a great actor and obviously very handsome but I'm not seeing either trait being taken advantage of in this show. His spoiled, prince type persona in the beginning just isn't a full sale, and then he's immediately thrown into a leadership role and changes his personality that fast? Also they went too heavy with his make up and wardrobe where he looks like a Japanese geisha, just with more glitter.
As for the rest of the characters/story...I'm really hoping things get more interesting. So far there's been gruelingly long scenes of dialogue with very little action. The first half of the first episode was spent talking about was going to happen. Then the 3rd or4th episode the two spies literally talked for 75% of the episode. There's slightly more passion/chemistry sparking between Shangguan Qian and Shang Jue but I feel like she spends more time talking about him, than actually with him.
As for the "villian" brothers. They're not very interesting. I'm not sure if we are supposed to pity them or hate them? Maybe both? And the comedy is not comedying. Nothing clearly meant to be funny actually made me laugh. Every "funny" scene feels inorganic and forced into the overall dark and serious setting. The only scene slightly amusing is when Shang Jue calls Ziyu out for noticing Shangguan Qian's good looks and Wei Shan gives him a death stare. But unless you're five years old you probably won't find Gong Zi Shang funny either.
The cinematography is pretty good. I have no problem with the dark vibes, graphics and settings. It was part of the appeal for me. The ambient sounds can be a little too intense for what's actually happening though. The background music for Shang Jue's entrance and for the scene where the brides arrive by boat was too dramatic for the scene. But overall the OST sounds decent and fits the drama well.
The premises of this drama seems really interesting so I'm going to stick it out until the end. It's a short enough drama to endure, even if things don't get better...UPDATE: I'm actually dropping it for now. I may circle back another time but after 8 episodes I was still bored to death.

Dropped, tried my best!
First of all this is my OWN opinion. Feel free to don't agree with it. I just write my own experience down if you don't agree with it then please scroll down and don't read it.I started watching this because I saw it had a good rating and I love fantasy, hidden identity, romance and action too. So I gave it a try. It's actually started intresting, with it's own dark, gloomy set. Since I haven't seen much episodes I can't really tell further. The two main leads meeting was quite intresting in the prison but I didn't mind it first. But when she actually tried to escape to lure him or idk what to was a bit stupid for me. I didn't much further since I got annoyed and dropped it without regrets.
I know a lot of people like this drama, because it's own beauty but I specialy didn't liked the dark theme. I especially like Esther dramas but I didn't liked this one.

My Journey to Jiuchen...

A journey into martial arts and poisonous potions
finished 9/10 🌟I DEMAND MY SECOND SEASON HOW ARE THEY GOING TO LEAVE THAT ENDING LIKE THAT?! 😭
apart from that...
I must say that in general it has become one of my favorite historical dramas 💖
it has been my favorite so far... It has been so far my favorite characters of Esther Yu and Zhang Linghe 👏
On top of that, their chemistry was 10/10 🔥
I liked the script even though it had its boring parts
The fight scenes were my favorites, I loved the entire visual effect of the drama from its direction, photography to the costumes, which I must say are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen.
I thought I would like the supporting characters from the edits I had seen but they were super meh for me
I liked his character on an individual level but I had a hard time connecting with her
her ending was also super open but if I'm honest I cared very little
Although it took me a while to watch it because of my lack of time, I really enjoyed the story
