九重紫: A hidden gem

was by far the best Chinese drama that I watched in 2024.

This drama captured my attention from the first scene, and I thoroughly enjoyed the well-paced storytelling, free from unnecessary filler that often drags out. It was satisfying to see how Dou Zhao (the female lead) seized her second chance at life, with the unwavering support of Song Mo (the male lead). The drama beautifully portrayed their romantic journey ad the way they worked together to overcome various challenges.

Having previously watched Meng Zi Yi (as Dou Zhao) and Li Yun Rui (as Song Mo) in other notable works, I found this drama to be a standout in redefining my perception of their talents. Their performance in were exceptional, showcasing their depth and range as actors. Both brought their characters to life with such authenticity that I'm eager to see their future projects.

The original soundtrack (OST) also added a memorable layer to the drama. My favorite track, 不羡 by 伯远, perfectly complemented the emotional scenes between the ML and FL, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

Overall, this drama was fantastic, and I wouldn't hesitate to rewatch it if time permits.

Beautiful

Wow. It begins with a bang all while being beautifully shot. This drama offers beautiful cinematography, beautiful cast, beautiful ost, and beautiful storytelling. The first episode hooked me from the start and left me wanting more. I am 8 episodes in and the story is unfolding in such a lovely way i can already tell this is going to be an epic. Its full of action, angst, and has a male lead and female lead with a great driving force behind their actions. Their acting is captivating, I often find myself rewinding so that i can take in the whole scene and every facial expression. The manner in which the ML and Fl stare into each other eyes is probably my favorite thing about this drama definitely swoon worthy. I cant wait to see how this masterpiece ends.

Delightful and Intense

Okay... First of all, we must know the background of Chinese Drama lately, there are some lack of amazing drama in the 2024, and 2024 are coming to an end. We, as a Chinese drama lovers, are kinda lost in the middle of war of two big actors and their dramas last November (you must know what I mean). Although I must admit that a sad ending that disappointing from ZLS, and an oblivious "bubbly" drama character from YSX, both can be characterized as two good dramas. I like the concept from both drama, the execution are amazing, overall, those dramas are satisfyingly enough. But 2024 is not a good year for Chinese Drama Lovers (a dry year I must say). I can only count few dramas that really amazing, and this drama (Blossom) really give me a new breath in this drought. Okay, that was the background.

What can I say about this drama? Welllllll...........
I like the way they present their story, the story telling is so engaging. I know that the concept is rather old, a going-back second chance, many dramas attempt to grapple in it. I can count a few dramas of the same theme that I really like, and Blossom is one of them. This is so unexpected, the drama that people not expect to be so good, indeed started so impressive.
I also like the camera angle and cinematography, they really support the story-line. Beautiful and a little bit dramatic i must say.
Must I also add, they choose the right actors this time, the beauty and acting aren't disappointing. Pleasuring for the eyes and also connecting to their character.
Well... of course I can't say that the ending will be a satisfactory, but at least they start with a good blow. From this drama I must say, that even without big shot actors for the main role, a drama can still have a good quality and is addictive. I quite love the story so far, maybe not relatable as human being coz I never experience a second chance in my real life haha, but at least they use logic to drive each character into doing their job in fulfilling the main story resulting a good beginning in a wholesome story. And my guess is that it will end not in a very happy manner too, but don't be afraid, not every good story in a drama will have a happy ending too. What people say "sad ending" can also be satisfying, depends on how you want to look as real as it can get.

I never been happier to be proven wrong, it's a happy ending and possibility of 2nd season with different title.. hahaha.. I love the character of ML's father (Dou Shiying), at lastttttt he stand up for his daughter and stand his ground till the end. I guess people do do that, better be late than never..
I really like the main CP's chemistry, they are so cuteeeee and the funny scene doesn't seems awkward, both Li Yun Rui and Meng Zi Yi are good with a little joke in their acting scenes. Just in need a bit passion in their kissing scene, I feel like it's not HOT enough for two people who knows they're gonna miss each other in the future.
Overall, I do not lower my rating... The story telling consistent from the beginning till the end, it's so engaging and exciting from one episode to the next one. I can see that they have low budget in filming this drama from their costumes in here and there, but amazingly it still looks so gorgeous. Worth all my time and focus in watching the drama, I even plan to re-watch it in near future.

Definitely a dark horse of 2024 Chinese drama!

Must watch drama

You are really missing something if you ain't watching this drama. I usually watch short dramas as I really don't have time to watch 40-50 eps, (there are some very very long dramas out there) and I also loose interest after 3-4 episodes, as it was hell of a difficult task to remember each character name and face in long dramas.
I thought to watch 2 eps of Blossom to give it a try over a sunday afternoon meal and I end up binge watching it.
I loved it, the FL is independent, intelligent, fierce, witty and at the same time intellectual. She can manage household so as she could do business, I haven't seen such a powerful female in long dramas. It's a change for good.
The ML is also powerful, and when two strong-willed characters meet each other, it was really fascinating to see how they handle situations. Their bond becomes strong, even though they have their own doubts in the beginning.
About the rest, you should watch and find out.
You would laugh, you would cry, feel sad, but feel satisfied.
The writer did a amazing job and I hope we could see more of these kind dramas.

I NEED MORE!!!! o_o

This isn't gonna be beautifully written or anything so bear with me lol. There's also only 6 episodes so far so I'll have to update once it ends.

I have never ran to write a review so quickly o_o It only has 6 episodes so far but I binged all of them at once and I almost cried when I got to the last one
I'm going to be honest, I usually watch dramas for a cute ML and really fluffy romance (im sensitive and can't handle too much angst/unhappy endings lol) but something about this story has me hooked. Tbh the premise isn't anything that hasn't been done before but it's so entertaining and well done imo

[Things I love about this drama 6 episodes in]:

- FL is AMAZING! I'm used to them making FL meek and kinda weak (not all but common) but Dou Zhao is strong, smart and is one step ahead of anyone trying to take her down. it's sooo satisfying watching her topple her evil stepmother's cliche plans to ruin her lol. Not to mention how absolutely STUNNING she is???

-It's still really early on so there hasn't been much if any romance yet but tbh I can feel the chemistry o_o One thing that usually sells me on a drama is how good the ML is at expressing his emotions thru his eyes. You can see the tension between them even if it's just a little bit so far (i'm excited to see how their relationship progresses).

-No idea if this is true but imo I'd say it's pretty high budget?? The costumes are really nice and FL looks amazing in every scene lol. Tbh I don't even need the ML, I'd watch 30+ episodes of just her hehe. The sets are nice and I think it's shot pretty well.

-The friendship/sisterhood between the FL and her cousins <333 I LOVE GIRLS <333 also!! she has two female bodyguards which I love.

Great premise, but the execution was a snoozer

It begins with the leads experiencing a tragic fate, but are somehow transported back to the past to live a do over. The FL returns to her younger self just in time to witness the betrayal that destroyed her parents marriage, precipitated her mother’s death and brought about her “wicked” step mother. The conflict that this situation could’ve created was resolved before it could ramp up. After which, the story slowed to a crawl. The series spends quite a bit of time on the day to day monotony of the FL building her business and the ML’s military excursions, but nothing that was building towards an intriguing story thread for the series. I gave this 5 episodes , but just could not get into it because the story wasn’t really moving forward at a reasonable pace.

On a shallow note the ML looked great with long salt and pepper hair, mostly salt. 😂. And the snow covered sets were very well done. The leads had so so chemistry. They need more time together to potentially warm up and mesh. Perhaps that happened in a later episode after I dropped the show. The acting was good, but the actors weren't all that charismatic, which I'm guessing contributed to the show being difficult to enjoy. If the actors were interesting, it would've certainly made it easier to continue watching even with the story barely progressing. Anyway, if you have the patience to sit through several episodes of some world building, while the general story comes together at a snails pace, then you may enjoy this. If you are someone who likes to see where the story is going and actions to support that story thread within the first episode or two, this show may not be for you.

The boring politics and narrative killed this show!

During the first 10 episodes, all I cared about was the main couple, especially the female lead. Usually for this type of wuxia / costume political show, the story if written and directed well would be interesting to watch. Sadly the script was so sloppy that it took us way longer to familiarize with all the characters and their names. I think the main issue here is the "Tell" more than "Show". They need to show us what's happening instead of simply mentioning a character's name and telling us what's going on.

Decent leads, boring political story. We've no clue how it got such a high rating, could it be the main casts have a high cult fan base? Anyway, this show is not worth it and is mediocre compared to shows like Heavenly Sword and Dragon Slaying Sabre and Love between fairy and devil. Those are worth of high praise, this drama (Blossom) is just NOT IT!

Se i due protagonisti avessero dovuto fare un video musicale insieme avrei dato 10 perché il lavoro sul visivo e sulla regia questa volta è stato una spanna sopra la media, come qualità, fotografie, riprese, effetti (sfumati, innumerevoli scale dei campi messe a fuoco e scontorni dello sfondo, effetti Boken e chi più ne ha più ne metta, buon utilizzo del colore).
Tuttavia, questo non è basato a compensare e camuffare le doti interpretative ed espressive molto carenti degli attori, principali e non, i buchi narrativi e la sceneggiatura spesso cedevole del lavoro.
Non c'è davvero nessuno che si sia distinto per una recitazione più matura e convincente, eppure qualche altro attore l'ho visto in altri lavori e mi sembrava all'altezza, tipo Liu Miatang o l'attore che fa Wei Tigwey è un bravissimo astro di mosha in love and redemption, qui non hanno completamente brillato.
La narrazione grazie ad un buon lavoro sulle immagini da parte dell'art director è immersiva, la prima puntata ha dei filtri e colori goth con tecniche di ripresa molto interessanti che presentano un lavoro diverso che cattura subito lo spettatore, dopo il primo episodio è una lenta caduta verso cliché e scopiazzamenti di ex drama famosi con le stesse identiche scene riprese. (The story of ming lang, are you the one, dream of splendor...).

Il tema è abbastanza comune, la storia non dice niente di nuovo, tuttavia l'elemento di novità è caratterizzato dalla presenza di un libro da interpretare per poter cambiare il destino. La protagonista infatti ha una seconda opportunità di vita dopo essere venuta in contatto con un monaco buddista che in punto di morte le dona questo testo "Cronache del mondo".
Anche questa idea poteva essere meglio resa, tuttavia nel corso della narrazione il ricorso al libro sarà sporadico e il racconto è sotto forma di personaggi contrassegnati da una storia espressa in forma metaforica, molto ermetica da interpretare (se la sceneggiatura avesse lavorato meglio si poteva fare un lavoro interessante e rendere questo tema originale e coinvolgente).
La premessa della rinascita è semplice e gli archi narrativi riguardano la cospirazione di palazzo e degli affari, in cui sono coinvolte molte persone, nonostante ci sia un buon aumento del livello di tensione, suspense e sollievo e un buon ritmo fino al 14°, il drama poi si arena. E' un continuo alto e basso, episodi in cui sembra che si vada riprendendo ed episodi di caduta libera dove macchinazioni, intrighi, personaggi vecchi e nuovi incasinano tutto e la recitazione è carente.
Non c'è niente di speciale nella trama o nella recitazione, unico pregio ripeto è l'uso accattivante della telecamera e del brio narrativo di questo regista che ho letto essere al suo primo lavoro di drama, ed essere invece molto "esperto di corti". Forse per questo il lavoro non ha funzionato ma la regia è l'unico dato di pregio di questo drama.

Il cast di questo drama è composto da attori le cui capacità di recitazione sono ancora in fase di sviluppo (si spera). Il man lead avrebbe dovuto essere per logica un uomo contorto, machiavellico, impulsivo e molto inquieto, diviso tra scrupoli morali e filiali e assettato di tensione per la vendetta, sofferente, tormentato, travagliato. Liu Ruy non è stato PER NULLA IN GRADO di rendere tutte queste sfaccettature, è sempre serio, composto e non ha nulla della complessità emotiva che dovrebbe avere il personaggio, a livello di espressione facciale è sempre il medesimo con qualche sguardo di sofferenza o un accenno di gioia, solo in due scene si è davvero distinto. E' vagamente più espressivo di Hu Yi Tian della fioritura imprevista ( un lavoro che pure non ha brillato per l'interpretazione monodimensionale dei due protagonisti ma salvata dalla storia e dalla bravura dei second lead e guest role).
Meglio la protagonista femminile che comunque ha un fascino troppo maturo, sia come personaggio che come estetica (non so se questo è legato ai palesi ritocchi estetici che ne rendono il viso innaturale e poco spendibile nei drama a tema storico dato che rinoplastica, filler e seconda palpebra con occhi da cerbiatto non esistevano nella dinastia MING). Tuttavia ha dato al suo personaggio un po' più di coloritura rispetto al freddo e distaccato Song Mo.
Si è parlato di una chimica eccezionale e girano molti reel sul web di contatti fisici tra di loro, in parte questo è stato reso grazie alle inquadrature e al buon lavoro di regia ma se osservate bene noterete che le difficoltà espressive dei due smorzano tantissimo la tensione impalpabile che lo spettatore dovrebbe sentire per gli sguardi o il contatto fisico , lo capirete definitivamente con i baci che sono un mero accostamento di labbra chiuse a denti serrati. Non dimenticherò una parte fondamentale , molto ben mostrata grazie al lavoro di regia moderna, in cui uno dei protagonisti dichiara il proprio sentimento e l'altro non ha nessuna variazione emotiva a livello microfacciale, quindi hanno inquadrato il sorriso per mostrare felicità ma già il pathos era stato distrutto dall'assenza di un minimo trasporto emotivo per la realizzazione di un desiderio che doveva mostrare quanto meno una travolgente felicità e invece ZERO.
Questa assenza di partecipazione emotiva mi ha posto come spettatore passivo davanti a delle scene e non mi ha fatto completamente coinvolgere o immergere nel racconto.

Un grosso limite è stato rappresentato anche dalla sceneggiatura: partendo dalla confusione tra appellativi, nomi, nomignoli, nomi propri che sin da principio ti rendono difficile seguire il drama in modo fluido, passando al montaggio che penalizza il racconto saltando pezzi che invece sono fondamentali allo sviluppo della storia. E per terminare devo dire che la sceneggiatura, dal 12 al 18 °diventa un racconto inutile di cose poco interessanti. I dialoghi non sono sempre banali o stupidotti, o logicamente incongruenti, ANZI qualche riflessione importante si può trovare e apprezzare, stessa cosa nel dialogo romantico della coppia tuttavia sono spesso confusi e mancano di coerenza logica interna alle scelte, non sempre congruente con le azioni, o cambi di rotta improvvisi per mandare avanti il lavoro, inoltre quando il dialogo è intenso non c'è trasporto emotivo nella recitazione, anche se hanno inserito il doppiaggio questo non ha salvato l'opera.

Le puntate si sono trascinate con degli intoppi per allungare la storia e intrattenere lo spettatore nello "tsundere" di questa coppia senza motivo, mancando di credibilità.
La prima notte insieme è stata tra il patetico e il ridicolo, la peggiore che io abbia mai visto in 50 lavori finora seguiti , sempre nel tentativo di allungare sfiancando lo spettatore stanco di vedersi trascinare degli eventi che ormai non ci stavano più.
Questa chimica è talmente carente che molte avrebbero preferito, ho letto, scegliesse il second lead che pure poteva essere reso con una maggiore complessità interiore. Della coppia principale salvo solo una bella scena a cavallo, l'unica che mi ha davvero emozionata.

Questo regista ha tentato di mascherare i difetti interpretativi con un brillante stile narrativo visivo e sono ricorsi anche ai doppiatori (PENSATE VOI ). Quindi mi chiedo perché affidarsi ad attori così acerbi per lavori che richiedono una grande complessità e gestione dei ruoli (una yang zi o un wang zhanyi o un tian hian ci o sun yi zhou forse sarebbero riusciti a risultare credibili). Mi viene da pensare che sono stati imposti per mera attrattività estetica ma una nota non basta a fare una sinfonia, il doppiaggio se non c'è trasporto in visivo per quanto sia buono perde forza ed è inutile.

POSITIVO: A parte l'uso migliore della regia rispetto ad altri drama che ho seguito , questo lavoro ha anche dei pregi , penalizzato dai difetti che sono quelli che ho finora elencato.
Di buono c'è il modo in cui hanno caratterizzato la protagonista : intelligente, volitiva, matura, con un ottimo fiuto per gli affari, ricchissima, con una grande "vision" e capacità di anticipazione delle mosse altrui, grandi abilità di pianificazione strategica e grande intraprendenza. Ora, ditemi voi se una donna così non meritava un'attrice di grande spessore o con maggiori abilità recitativo- espressive per rendere tutto questo.
L'idea di utilizzare il linguaggio dei fiori per esprimere l'ideale a cui aspirare o i concetti di supporto, crescita, l'ideale di relazione sentimentale.
Il tipo di relazione che gli autori hanno voluto formare è molto bella: lei è un po' il suo grillo parlante, una buona amica che lo aiuta a non cadere negli errori che commetterebbe per la sua impulsività e le deprivazioni affettive da parte paterna cui è stato sottoposto, a cui invece ha provveduto lo zio. Ora provvede lei, si sostituisce a madre e zio e lo supporta, lo incoraggia, qualsiasi cosa lui vorrà lei lo aiuterà, in mezzo a tante difficoltà saprà tirarlo fuori dai guai. Questa idea di eroina che salva l'uomo che ama a differenza dell'uomo salvatore che vediamo quasi in ogni lavoro, mi è molto piaciuta.

L'idea di utilizzare un libro come un racconto da interpretare pure è molto bella.
L' intrigo è molto ben congegnato tanto che se non siete abili ed esperti lettori potreste dover arrivare al 25° per capire chi si nasconde dietro alle difficoltà sperimentate dai protagonisti e perché sebbene gli episodi finali vedono una caduta di stile a livello interpretativo e di scrittura con soluzioni improbabili, non mostrate e scopiazzate da are you the one e ming lan dove però il processo era ben spiegato. Ho faticato per finire gli ultimi 5 episodi, ero insofferente per la recitazione stentata, specie la serva che impazzisce o il protagonista che non ha mai il carico di sofferenza adeguato al peso che porta, o la protagonista che a volte è totalmente indifferente in scene strazianti. Davvero PENOSI.

Nonostante alcuni archi che avrebbero potuto essere migliori, alcune occasioni mancate, una logica sciatta e modifiche disordinate, la storia si conclude in modo soddisfacente.
È una produzione solida che ha fatto del suo meglio con le sue risorse limitate. Le idee c'erano, la macchina da presa anche , mancavano gli ingredienti. Peccato.
