Phenomenal timeslip romcom brings so many feels but has too many loops

Time travel has always been a popular theme because of how it tickles our imagination. In my experience, most of them fail terribly in delivering a satisfying resolution. I expected Lovely Runner to break this curse, however, despite the brimming amount of swoon-worthy moments and Woo Seok close-ups, Lovely Runner’s writing still falls flat and excessively drawn out.

Byeon Woo Seok as Seon Jae is a revelation. He is 2024’s breakthrough star and I fear no one can top his face card and on-the-spot comedic timings in the foreseeable future. He is more than just an eye candy because this handsome guy models, plays sports and sings, proving he is an all-rounder in the acting scene. He suits high school romance because he gives off this ulzzang or campus crush vibes and he has this relatable demeanor. Ryu Seon Jae is literally tailored fit for Woo Seok.

As expected, Kim Hye Yoon delivers a phenomenal and heartfelt performance. She shines in every role she takes. It saddens me though that she is underappreciated and overshadowed by Woo Seok’s success. Given her wide range of acting skills, it is still a mystery to me how she barely receives projects. Im Sol will not be Im Sol without Hye Yoon’s animated portrayal and soulful eyes that even a single teardrop falling from her eyes will break your heart into million pieces. This speaks volume to how Hye Yoon’s acting can move you deeply.

Lovely Runner uses the common and tested formula of K-drama which is fast-paced, full of cliffhangers, one-dimensional but entertaining supporting characters, exaggerated reactions and of course contrived conflicts that do not make sense for the sake of extended runtime. The first half of the show truly captivated my heart and piqued my curiosity. School days in the late 2000s brings back nostalgia and got me reminiscing about the good old days when everything is not yet high-tech and we just lived simple, normal lives. Indeed, those were the days. Unfortunately, the second half went down the drain and felt like a filler, full of fluff romance. The show is divided into three parts which also depicts the different stages of their lives from high school students, college students and working adults. This instills that in whichever timeline, Im Sol and Seon Jae are fated to meet each other even if it ends in doom.

There are many ways this could have turned out. This could have delivered a poignant story about how fans and idols are each other’s source of strength. They have this symbiotic relationship and bond that is unbreakable and beyond words. This kind of story would have been more heart-touching and relatable since there are millions of K-pop fans all around the world. Instead, they chose to tell a story of a one-dimensional villain who is obsessed with killing Seon Jae. The story did not even care to elaborate where this criminal came from and what his motives are for kidnapping and killing his innocent victims. I also hate how the plot treated Im Sol’s disability as an obstacle to her dreams. This is subtle discrimination against people with disability (PWD). I hate that no matter how many times she turns back time, the company is still the same and will always reject her if she's not able to walk because of the goddamn stairs. In every timeline, the company didn't bother to invest in an elevator 😤😤Doesn’t just this make Im Sol feel a lot worse because in every timeline her disability was her nemesis? Doesn’t this kind of story just add more fuel to disablism? Don’t get me wrong, I also wish Im Sol to be perfectly healthy and normal. It is just the way the story treated her paralysis as her tragedy and doom which leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Overall, Lovely Runner will go down in history as one of the most iconic romcoms which catapulted Woo Seok to stardom. It is a viral sensation and cultural phenomenon that reignited Hallyu. For some, this is a pleasant, feel-good watch, but for others this is a fluff romance with too much runtime and repetitive arc. This was truly a rollercoaster ride over 16 episodes which I will gladly ride again depending on if I’m in the mood for romance and willing to overlook plot holes and filler scenes or not.

My On Repeat Watching KDrama

I know it might be boring and so typical it drama, but somehow we need this kinda drama where Kdramas out there getting more intense and somewhat sometimes out of the box!

But for sureeee this drama sooo FUN! I really enjoyed watching this drama and been rewatching this drama like multiple times in the nearest gap!

ImSol and SeonJae really love and care each other with their own way, but their communication getting better and growing day-by-day. I just love how they get mature from 19yo to 34yo. So far this one of some KDrama that I keep rewatching until I'm gonna feel bored.

So as for the review: Every once in a while, there comes a drama or a movie that you get super attached to, something uknow will become your comfort place for the future. Lovely Runner was this for a lot of netizens out there. The amount of love it has received is totally justified by what it has provided to us.
LR has made my mondays worth waiting for for the last 2 months and as much i was anticipating the ending and couldn't wait to see it, i can't let it go. My Monday's will be blue again and my tuesday's will feel empty.
It has been a long time since I have obsessed over a drama like this. Even looking at all the bts and interviews.
Most dramas are a one time watch and over a few days we tend to forget them. But there's some, like this one, which we'll find ourselves coming backk to.
The focal point of this drama is the chemistry. If you're a hopeless romantic like me, u need to watch it. The romantic timing is so damn good in this and ur gonna be feeling all kinds of butterflies everywhere.
The main reason LR is loved by all is the family friendly storyline, the heartfluttering romance and the relatable characters. Watching this, there wasn't one second of "what is this scene" or "this scene is unnecessary".
I feel like no matter how good a story is, if u cannot present it properly to the world then it's useless. On the contrary, no matter how cliche the story is, if u add ur elements and enough spice the story will become a hit. That is what happens with any romcom. We all know what the end is gonna be but all we're watching for is the kisses (uknow it's true).
I would like to appreciate the hardwork of everyone behind this amazing kdrama, especially the directors and writers cuz they've done an amazing job here.

FOUND MYSELF HEALING THRU THIS DRAMA

These days living was so hard & disappointed in a lot of things. I need to escape, find a space where I can forget the reality for a while and imagine some dreamy future. Hehehe~ Luckily I found this drama.

I just finished all 16 episodes yesterday. I just wanna say~ GOOD JOB TO ALL CASTS, PDs & the WRITER. I totally enjoyed the drama. Started watching because of HyeYoon-nim, been her fans since running man (with her as the guest). Her bright real life character do affected me. I found myself act like her sometimes. hahaha..

The story was written perfectly. Let me present to you some of my favorite parts:

1. Im Sol's character - Quite different from other dramas. She is not in love with the ML at the beginning, it's just purely love as a fan who supported her bias idol. Just like other kpop idol fans who are unconditionally supporting their idols, wishing for their best and so on. In addition, she only accepted SunJae's love after quite some times. She's not just blindly in love with the handsome ML. And I was super in love with her funny, clumsy little girl character. HyeYoon indeed portrays Im Sol character the best. I can't even imagine others being Im Sol.

2. SunJae's character - I know that he falls in love with Im Sol at the first sight. But to stay loving someone for 15 years without confessing is another level of love. There's no second FL also a plus point. Otherwise, it would be annoying. I also love his loserism character. Dramas always portrays the ML as perfect man, but this time is different. He's charming in his own way. And he loves in Im Sol in all timeline.

3. Taesung's character - The greenest second ML ever. I was crying a few times because of him. He wished for Im Sol's happiness sincerely. And he indeed the reason why at the end SunJae & ImSol can be together. I don't mind when the writer did not elaborate on his backstory. I just want to see Taesung as it is. No need his tragic/sad back story. Present Taesung is the best as portrays.

4. In Hyuk - Our cupid friend!!! His unconditionally supporting SunJae to confess the love to Im Sol was so funny. He's being the best friend of SunJae was a good character written ever. Thankfully he can be the artist at the end, hahaha ~ how can writer wrote him as a singer with bad vocal. In real life, he is really good in singing, our N.flying leader-nim.

5. Im Geum & Hyun Joo - Although these characters seem comic and unserious, at some point there are some life lessons that I get from both of them. Im Geum seems quite clumsy, but as I realized he is a protective brother. Hyun Joo seems unserious all the time, but her character developed after married was good too. They both delivers some good advice to Im Sol's - "In order to gain something, also be ready to lose something too. - Im Geum" "It would be nice if I can change my fate but if it caused to not get seeing my children, then I hope my fate unchanged. - Hyun Joo". Love these two.

Whatever it is, I do enjoy the drama & happy while watching. Smiling, kicking my blanket like crazy~ oh my~ it's been a while since I last watching Kdramas. Seriously looking forward to their next project, especially HyeYoon-nim. Hwaiting!!!

While I can agree that this kdrama might not be a favorite for others. It deserves the hype and high rating. I was surprsied to find all of the top reviews negative when I find the show a justifiably great drama. The acting is amazing, I haven't gushed and swooned over a male lead like this since strong girl bong soon. The story and plot kept me hooked throughout. I genuiley liked all of the side characters and didn't find myself just skimming over their screen time. The kdrama got me emotional and is truly in my top 5 for its sentimental value, acting and film quality, and insane chemistry. I didn't find the whole falling for a fan thing weird at all because that isnt what happened. If I hadn't already seen the show and saw the comments rating this a 5 and below then I probably would've never watched it which would've been such a shame considering how much I genuinely love it. It beats true beauty by miles in terms of every category and true beauty is something i love and have rewatched multiple times. So I implore you, please watch it

THE BEST

this has become my favourite kdrama of all time. i can’t stop thinking about it. every episode is a balance of romance, comedy and thriller. its the only drama even after the couple confessed I WANTED TO SEE MORE. I NEED TO SEE MORE. Kim Hyeyoon and Byeon Wooseok have killed it in this drama. every cast member actually played a huge role into bringing this masterpiece together. the chemistry between everyone is amazing and it shines through in the drama.

THE OST my gosh i’m in love with the ost, sudden shower, spring snow and may I love you? is on repeat. i feel like im going through withdrawal now that Ive accepted the drama is over. its absolutely phenomenal im jealous of anyone who hasn’t watched it id do anything to erase my memory and watch it for the first time again.

A Charming Rom-Com About Fate, Love and Destiny.

The series is actually quite enjoyable, especially if you're a fan of classic rom-coms. It has all the right elements—lighthearted fun, romance, and a bit of drama. However, it does feel very reminiscent of True Beauty, from the character dynamics to the overall execution, which makes it less original.

I started watching because it was trending, and the premise intrigued me. The story is sweet, centered around the idea of changing the future while navigating fate and destiny—are the coincidences really just coincidences? At its core, it's about two people fighting for each other against the tragic events in their lives, which is quite touching.

This was my first time seeing Kim Hye Yoon in a lead role. Though she has appeared in other series I've watched, she never particularly stood out to me. She did a fine job, but her performance wasn’t especially memorable. Byeon Woo Seok, on the other hand, caught my attention. I had seen viral clips of him from Strong Girl Namsoon (which I haven’t watched), and I was curious to see if he had more to offer beyond his good looks. I think he does—his acting is solid, and with his rising popularity, I wouldn’t be surprised if he soon takes on more complex roles beyond the charming boyfriend or attractive villain.

Overall, I’d recommend this series. It’s light, fun, and an easy watch.
