this has become my favourite kdrama of all time. i can’t stop thinking about it. every episode is a balance of romance, comedy and thriller. its the only drama even after the couple confessed I WANTED TO SEE MORE. I NEED TO SEE MORE. Kim Hyeyoon and Byeon Wooseok have killed it in this drama. every cast member actually played a huge role into bringing this masterpiece together. the chemistry between everyone is amazing and it shines through in the drama.

A Charming Rom-Com About Fate, Love and Destiny.

The series is actually quite enjoyable, especially if you're a fan of classic rom-coms. It has all the right elements—lighthearted fun, romance, and a bit of drama. However, it does feel very reminiscent of True Beauty, from the character dynamics to the overall execution, which makes it less original.

I started watching because it was trending, and the premise intrigued me. The story is sweet, centered around the idea of changing the future while navigating fate and destiny—are the coincidences really just coincidences? At its core, it's about two people fighting for each other against the tragic events in their lives, which is quite touching.

This was my first time seeing Kim Hye Yoon in a lead role. Though she has appeared in other series I've watched, she never particularly stood out to me. She did a fine job, but her performance wasn’t especially memorable. Byeon Woo Seok, on the other hand, caught my attention. I had seen viral clips of him from Strong Girl Namsoon (which I haven’t watched), and I was curious to see if he had more to offer beyond his good looks. I think he does—his acting is solid, and with his rising popularity, I wouldn’t be surprised if he soon takes on more complex roles beyond the charming boyfriend or attractive villain.

Overall, I’d recommend this series. It’s light, fun, and an easy watch.

The story quickly ran in numerous circles...Should have been shorter.

This rom-com started very well : interesting concept, an intriguing fantasy twist, a very attractive male lead and adorable heroine. The fated mates aspect of the main couple relationship was so good...But the plot itself got so repetitive with a lot of dumb choices, noble idiocy that really made the drama lost its appeal to me.

The series clearly would have benefited from a shorter length (8-12 episodes), this would have prevented a lot of the filler moments with a bunch of rather boring secondary characters, that never really got attaching to me (with the sole exception maybe of the grandma).

Having said that, I quite enjoyed the soundtrack and I was pretty impressed with the production and the making. The skillful framing of the leads and the way they played on their height difference, was super smart and butterflies inducing.

I would recommend this to people that love fated mates stories. It has a solid start and the production value as well as the chemistry between main leads is worth it (especially if you are a fan of Byeon Woo Seok and/or Kim Hye Yoon).

Lovely Runner? More Like an Overhyped, Overrated and Boring Run in Circles

If I had to describe my experience of watching Lovely Runner in one word, it would be frustrated. Several people recommended it to me, but I started it quite late because heavily hyped dramas often struggle to fulfil the enormous expectations surrounding them. Unfortunately, my hesitation proved justified. Despite its popularity and remarkably high ratings, Lovely Runner became one of my most disappointing K-drama experiences.

On paper, the premise is genuinely promising. Lovely Runner combines fantasy, romance and time travel in a story about a devoted fan attempting to change the fate of the celebrity who once gave her hope. It is an emotionally appealing concept with all the ingredients required for an engaging romantic drama. The initial episodes establish that premise reasonably well, and it is easy to understand why the story attracted so many viewers.

However, an interesting premise cannot carry an entire series by itself. After the opening episodes, the narrative becomes increasingly predictable. The repeated changes to the timeline create the appearance of movement, but the central conflicts and emotional patterns remain largely unchanged. Instead of developing naturally, the drama repeatedly manufactures danger, separation and emotional distress to keep the story moving. Several scenes feel prolonged beyond their dramatic value, while others appear to exist primarily to provoke another emotional response from the audience.

This repetition gradually weakened my investment in the characters. Rather than wondering what would happen next, I often felt that I already understood the pattern: hope would appear, another complication would separate the leads, someone would cry, and the timeline would once again rearrange the circumstances without meaningfully changing the emotional substance of the story. The nonlinear structure could have created suspense and complexity, but the screenplay handles its movement between timelines without enough clarity or discipline. As a result, the drama frequently loses momentum and, eventually, my attention.

This was my first time watching both Kim Hye-yoon and Byeon Woo-seok in leading roles, and unfortunately, neither performance connected with me as strongly as I expected. Kim Hye-yoon brings considerable energy to Im Sol, but her performance often felt excessively expressive for my taste. The exaggerated reactions, forced cuteness and frequent shifts into heightened emotion made the character more irritating than endearing to me. Some viewers clearly found this style charming, but I struggled to see a natural person beneath the performance.

Byeon Woo-seok delivers a more restrained performance as Ryu Sun-jae and handles several emotional scenes reasonably well. Nevertheless, I did not find the performance compelling enough to justify the extraordinary level of praise surrounding it. The character is likeable and devoted, but much of his appeal comes from how idealistically he is written rather than from particularly layered characterisation.

More importantly, I did not feel convincing romantic chemistry between the leads. Chemistry is subjective, and many viewers clearly experienced their relationship very differently. For me, however, their interactions often seemed carefully performed rather than naturally lived. Both actors appeared to be working extremely hard to create sweetness, comedy or heartbreak, and that visible effort prevented many scenes from feeling spontaneous. The supporting cast performs adequately, but when the central relationship fails to create an emotional connection, the surrounding story inevitably loses much of its impact.

The direction also contributes to this problem. Almost every important scene is treated as though it must become the emotional centrepiece of the entire drama. The actors are frequently asked to express everything at maximum intensity, while lingering shots, tears and music repeatedly emphasise what the audience is expected to feel. Emotional storytelling is most effective when intensity is balanced with restraint. Here, the constant insistence that every moment is special eventually makes very few moments feel genuinely special.

I always look for one or two exceptional scenes that remain in my memory after a drama ends. Great dramas usually contain moments in which the writing, performance, direction and emotional context come together so naturally that the scene stays with the viewer. Lovely Runner appears determined to manufacture that effect repeatedly. Instead of allowing a few significant scenes to stand apart, it frames numerous interactions as iconic romantic moments. For me, this overemphasis diminished their impact and left me without a single scene that felt truly extraordinary.

Visually, however, the drama is considerably more successful. The cinematography is polished, with attractive framing, warm colour grading and carefully selected locations. Recurring visual elements—including the yellow umbrella and seasonal imagery—give the series a recognisable aesthetic identity. The costumes and makeup are also excellent. The colour combinations complement both the characters and the environments, while the styling convincingly supports the movement between different periods. This department deserves genuine praise.

The soundtrack is another major strength. The songs are memorable, and the background score generally matches the intended atmosphere of each scene. Even when the narrative failed to move me, the music frequently did its best to provide the emotional weight that I found missing from the performances and screenplay.

The finale provides the happy romantic resolution that most fans would want, but by that point, I was no longer emotionally invested in the outcome. Rather than feeling satisfied, I mainly felt relieved that I had reached the end. The combination of repetitive plotting, heightened performances and excessive emotional manipulation made the series surprisingly difficult for me to complete.

I understand why Lovely Runner became popular. It offers an attractive cast, polished visuals, memorable music, an appealing fantasy-romance premise and an idealised love story built for passionate fandom. Nevertheless, popularity and personal quality are not always the same thing. For me, the execution never fulfilled the potential of the premise, and the content did not justify its exceptionally high reputation. Lovely Runner may be deeply meaningful to many viewers, but for me, it was an overextended and emotionally exhausting drama whose hype greatly exceeded its substance.

aA script writer who had me screaming at the stupidity of their script.

Okay, I'm not great at writing. I just had to say something about this. This series first three or four episodes pulled me in, intelligent, articulate, funny, engaging,. I just asked myself for having not watched it when it first came out and had such good ratings and reviews. But now I wish I'd never seen it. From episode 4 to the end the script writer made the lead actress into an barely tolerable moron. Every choice she makes is exactly the one that's going to be catastrophic.

In the episodes after the first three or four, there are occasional moments of humor that are actually really funny. I laughed out loud multiple times in between the sickening script where the actress is just horrible in her choices. Everyone around her is trying their best while she does everything to sabotage a good outcome.

The lead actress did her job. She portrayed a moronic idiot very well. The lead actor had a showcase for his looks body and talent. He'll go far. He had a dream role. He played the perfect man. He had to portray a lot of different emotions and he was good at it. So, since he's a Korean making Korean dramas or whatever even if he sucked at acting his career is mostly guaranteed. But he's a good actor and gorgeous; so he should go far.

I somehow think that having played this role the lead actress may have murdered her future. But, I don't know how film companies look at potential actors. If they look at the fact that she was really good at playing a moron then she should get more roles. But if the overall impact of her looking like a complete waste of space is what they look at, then her career is dead. The script writer pretty much must despise women. The first episodes she does something continuously that I'm not going to mention so that I'm not putting in spoilers; but you'll see. It's undeniable and constant in those first episodes and then starts disappearing as she transitioned into a moron. Her role portrayed someone that I couldn't help thinking should really just get killed. But, since this is I don't know a comedic romance story with some thriller thrown in; the character has to live. So sad.

The support cast was excellent and provided many comedic moments. The only problem I had is that the brother and his girlfriend were working with a script that had them over the top and ridiculous. Some people enjoy that. I don't. The mom and the grandmother and the dad were excellent and funny. The grandmother was absolute howl in the first few episodes. The second male lead (?), had a script that half-assed continuity and logic. He was supposed to be misunderstood, but the script writer didn't bother to actually include the pieces that would have made this flow with the story. It was choppy and either lazy or amateurish on the part of the script writer. The actor was excellent. I really liked him.

I only kept watching till the end because I hate abandoning things, but literally every episode from 10 on I was screaming at the actress and projecting my thoughts at the screenwriter as a see you next Tuesday. The storyline had potential and could have been done much better, but either time, budget, interference from investors, or that the script writer was that stupid; took the potential and beat it, strangled it, and then drowned it.

I have little to comment on the music, it was there. That's not to say that it was good or bad. I just generally don't care about the music in whatever I'm watching. My only criterion is that the music doesn't overwhelm the dialogue or the scene. In that sense, the music was great.

The series got an 8.9 or something rating on this site. I assume that the audience it was targeting was 12 to 14 maybe 15 year old girls. Not that they're dumb, but not necessarily the best judges. I only say this because of the rating. I generally assume that teenagers are able to discern quality. But the ratings seem to indicate this was just fan (atical) loyalty rather than judging the quality of the work.

2016 nostalgia. Possibly biased.

This drama surprised me: for the worldwide success, as well as the depth that went beyond a simple first love story. More than romance (believe me, it seems that it only exists in the screen), is feeling the fear and taking the plunge, and realising the people around you, possibly never finding out the little things they do when you're not looking.

I never expected a slice of life drama to blow up the way this has. Didn't even watch the trailer before clicking solely for Kim Hye Yoon, and ended up being smitten for the male lead.

Being smacked with 2016 nostalgia (seriously...there's something about the 2016 air that brought the best dramas to memory) is the reason why Lovely Runner is another iconic drama to remember.

Of course, it has its flaws. So many flaws. But this work reminded me so strongly why I loved kdramas in the first place. Why I continued watching after a decade.

It took me back to 2016 back to my high school days, where adulthood hadn't kicked in yet. So maybe I'm biased and Lovely Runner's main theme of time moved me more than it should've.

Works in recent times have been noticed to be VERY disappointing despite the high budget. But LR proved you can have a simple drama (like the old times), and still move the viewer, stuffed with emotions and moments that will forever be embedded in the heart.

3 years of waiting, and the success couldn't be more deserved. Kim Hye Yoon got her co-star, and the role was meant for Byeon Wooseok. The universe does reward perseverance.

Nice start, terrible ending

Worth watching until episode 8, but it only goes downhill from there.
Lower your expectations drastically if you plan to watch this series, it is bizarrely overrated.
You have been warned.

(SPOILERS!)

Why why why must there always be an assassin in a ROMANCE DRAMA??? Please k-drama writers, stop relying on this overused plot device to justify dragging on the show for too many episodes! This storyline isn’t even the main story of the show! The main premise was “fan with disabilities travels back in time to save her utt from depression, then discovers he was her neighbour all along and must deal with heartbreak while doing her best to save him from his bleak destiny”. This had so much potential! So many important, deep themes that could have contributed to these characters’ development and depth, but they’re all discarded to put a generic serial killer as the main excuse for all their problems! Aaaah that made me so angry!!

Seon Jae had 2 personality traits: he liked to swim and he liked Im Sol, and around episode 4 he gives up swimming. So we are left with this one-dimensional personality of his, where his sole purpose in life is to be with Sol. Not even the music bit had a significant impact on the story! I wanted to see him fall in love with music so bad after having his dreams of being a professional swimmer shattered, but it seems music is just like any other job to him. He might as well have chosen to be a janitor in Im Sol’s office building. The only purpose of him still being in music is so we can have the plot device of him being famous, but that’s it.

The show should have ended around episode 8 when they get together again in the future after she successfully avoided her accident in the past. It was completely wholesome the way they spent the entire night together just talking, enjoying funny moments and finally opening up about their true feelings for each other! It was almost like Before Sunset, but actually enjoyable. And what’s more, she didn’t have to return to the past that last time—he wasn’t dead, he was hospitalized! There was a real chance that he would wake up, and she didn’t even wait to see if it was possible! If he had woken up in that timeline, all would end up just fine seeing as the assassin was already imprisoned again. They could be together without any fear, but the writers just had to keep stalling us through another 8ish more episodes.

Between episodes 9 and 13 I was just bored, but after episode 14 is when we really start to have key lore and writing mistakes. If she went back all the way to before he first met her and stopped him from ever getting to know her at that time, in the future she SHOULD still be a wheelchair-user OR dead, because Seon Jae would have never been there to save her from her first abduction! The writers just gave up at this point, there is no more logic. No more attempts at making this story the least bit sensical. And, AND, how is she still friends with Tae Seong?? Did she make the effort to befriend him in the new timeline? Wasn’t she only able to stay in the past for one or two months? At that point teenager Sol would’ve come back and found out she was friends with Tae Seong and tried to date him again, and he would have been bored with her AGAIN, then they would end up NOT being friends after all, so IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE! The third time she went back in time we see a scene where in the future Seon Jae disappears from an Eclipse promotion billboard, but in the future after Sol went back again and never met him, he is still famous, but he doesn’t seem to be a part of Eclipse, why is that? He should be a part of the band if Sol was never there to stop him from going to auditions with them! MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!!

And oh my god, the protagonists have nothing to do with THE MAIN VILLAIN’S defeat?!?! What even is this show?? How the hell have I watched 16 mf episodes of Sol trying to save Seon Jae from this guy only for him to be killed by A RANDOM WHITE TRUCK??

Obs: I don’t think I have seen a FL cry as much as Sol. For real, she’s crying every 10 mins in each episode.

Conclusion: Can we just be honest? The only reason this k-drama is so highly overrated is Byeon Woo-seok, and that’s fine, I too will be watching every show he does. Hell, I came here after watching Perfect Crown just to see him a little more, he really is very charming! But let’s not act like this series is a work of art, please. Off the top of my head I can think of at least 5 other k-dramas that deserved the ratings Lovely Runner got with way better plot and character development.

The soundtrack is great though.

Butterfly effect caused butterflies in my who body

I started the series after the last episode was released and my only goal was to avoid spoilers about the ending, but the article titles refused to cooperate. Even so, I watched each episode intently, and even though I wanted to slap Im Sol and Ryu Sun Jae at times, I loved every scene they had.

The downside of time travel is that when the main character is transported for the first time, we can expect an episode full of awkward moments, because most of the time they think they're dreaming and therefore has no inhibitions. It was the same here, so the first few episodes had me scratching my head, but as soon as Sol got close to Sun Jae, the hour-long episodes suddenly only lasted a few minutes.

By the fourth episode, I wasn't sure if things were tangleding or unraveling or both at the same time. The further I got, the more confused I became, but at the same time it all made sense. Everything. Amnost every single detail that happened in the story, and it doesn't matter if it was in the past or the present, somehow affected everything that happened. The butterfly effect was displayed perfectly. Yes, I found some things not quite clear, but they didn't really relate to the main plot.

The story was incredibly emotional. Sometimes I laughed, sometimes I melted, sometimes I screamed and sometimes I cried. I fell in love with the main characters very quickly, and no matter what emotion I experienced with them, I really experienced it fully.

I loved how Im Sol and Sun Jae were connected from the very beginning. Their fates were sealed long before the first episode began, and it was only a matter of time before they came together. In any world, time, and universe, they were simply meant to be together and watch out for each other.

And since the story involves a fictitious music group, it is obvious that the story will be accompanied by beautiful songs. The one Sun Jae wrote for Sol is really beautiful and I'll be listening to it long after I finish watching the series.

A difficult birth?

Maybe this series suffers from the difficult birth it had, with a slow start in production. I think that its origin as a webtoon does show in the characterisation of the lead actors and the way in which the dialogue has a "comic book" quality. It did take me a while to get used to that but it the end it doesn't seem to matter.
The two lead actors, Byeon Woo-seok and Kim Hye-yoon quite simply acted their socks off and all the cast were directed to blend in together admirably. I did struggle a bit with the time slipping which was a necessary part of the story but as an older citizen, I just accepted that I didn't need to know what date it was in every scene and just sit back and enjoy it.
My family has been touched by suicide, related to that of Korean pop idols and I wanted to let your cast and production team know that the storyline is all good as far as I am concerned. Conversations about suicide are always helpful and are not disrespectful.
