A great gem
May i start with.. I rarely leave reviews, like seriously, this is my second or third review ever, and I've watched my fair share of dramas. The story is beautiful, main lead has just found out that he has 3 months to live so he re-connects with his ex-girlfriend and goes on a search for his biological father, so to say, his last mission before death.
From start to end the drama is beautiful, funny, crazy and super sad, it tucked on my heartstrings big time. And the OST, oh my, it's perfect!
I haven't watched such an amazing emotional roller-coaster for quite a while and this will stay with me for a long time, a true gem ❤️
Actors - oh my, 11/10, perfection!

JOINING HAE JO IN THE FINAL DRIFT OF HIS LIFE
The day we are born, our date of departure is also decided. Death is something we all know is inevitable, yet we're never truly prepared to face it. Without giving away too many spoilers, this is the first time I've seen a story where, instead of seeking a cure, the protagonist opts to do some last-minute homework. Out of the blue, he decides to find his father (a sperm donor), convinced that his disease was inherited from him—despite never considering that his mother could have been the carrier.Anyway, moving on, he ends up kidnapping his ex to accompany him on his adventure. Why? Because she's dealing with premature menopause, and somehow he decides to take her along. Logic? Don’t ask me. Maybe he just wanted to try his last shots at fertilizing her fallopian tubes before his time runs out—who knows?
Yet, despite all this absurdity, the story is surprisingly captivating. It made me laugh like crazy and cry like hell.
What I liked best:
1. Actors: The cast is incredible—seasoned artists, many of whom have been in the industry for decades.
2. Character depth: The leads, in particular (and everyone else, in general), have their own backstories that genuinely make you feel connected to and sympathetic towards them. For instance, the second lead, who has always been timid around his mother, undergoes significant character development. By the end, he transforms into a confident person unafraid to speak his mind.
3. Plot: The storyline is focused and concise, with no unnecessary detours. In fact, such narratives don't have room for conspiracy theories or melodramatic suspense.
4. Realistic ending: The male lead doesn’t survive. It’s tragic but also very realistic. Writers can pen countless miracles, but we know that in real life, such situations rarely end in a fairy tale.
In terms of the music, it was decent—perhaps not entirely to my taste, but it wasn't bad either.
I'm genuinely glad that Korean writers are experimenting with their typical storytelling tropes. We're moving away from the heavy makeup and designer outfits to something more raw, with imperfect backgrounds. Even the actors are expanding their range, taking on roles that go beyond merely being eye candy.
However, the re-watch value is zero. No matter how good it was, I wouldn’t recommend sticking to this gloomy story a second time.

Dropped at ep. 5 but 10/10 stars??
Mr. Plankton was the oldest “plan to watch” on my list. It had been sitting at the bottom for a year, simply because I knew it would bring about tears on top of tears. I dropped this show 5 episodes in but I rated it a perfect score. I simply could not bring myself to witness these tragic soulmates lose each other. I know, I’m a big huge coward that’s going to miss out on all the beauty this show has to offer. I KNOW…but I cannot do it🤣. I officially called it quits upon the understanding they are selfish soulmates who deeply love each other but destiny will nerf the absolute hell out of them. They understand each others sadness in a way nobody else will. Unlucky lovers, destined for a sad sad sad ending. I hate that he dragged her with him to suffer the loss of himself, but I understood him. I hated that her absolute sweety baby fiancé ran around the country for her, but I understood her choices every step of the way, too. I just couldn’t bring myself to get dragged with them…that being said, cast was absolutely amazing, soundtrack absolutely amazing, plot absolutely amazing. I wish I wasn’t a scaredy cat. Call me a cliche but I would’ve loved a universe where he healed and she had a miraculous baby and everyone lived happily ever after. (Bonus points we can all agree with: Woo Do-Hwan IS A HOT HOT HOTTIE. The shirtless scenes??? Please sir just one more before your brains pops…don’t cancel me for that one guys I’m sorry)Was this review helpful to you?
Had the cry of a lifetime to this show
I LOVED THIS! This got recommended to me by a friend and I'm so glad they did! I cried, I laughed and just about felt every emotion watching this! I love the main three actors in this as well and have seen them all in a few other things. This show is a perfect mix of comedy, romance, and tragedy. Emphasis on the tragedy. Definitely not a lighthearted story but I cannot recommend enough! Was this review helpful to you?

All of that work (hardcore spoiler)
All of that work only to rush the last episode like that. Absolutely no explanation as to why and how they concluded that his original father was his biological father. The entire series was centered around him finding five potential sperm donors to be his biological father and they pulled a stunt like that? Five minutes of a scene that landed us back to his original biological father? And with no elaboration. I am so confused. Was this review helpful to you?
The end. It was really wonderful and I think I will carry this drama with me for a very long time.

Such a emotional masterpiece!!
Mr.Plankton changed my life. The bad taste still on my lips because life can be full of crap and hae jo of all people deserved to live, to have everything that life has stolen from him.
This drama is so well written, the characters emotions, fears and joys, everything so raw and truthful, wich make you fell right there between the story. I'm so sad that I didn't watched it before, especially because I was afraid of suffering with grief of a person who doesn't even existe but...
I could never forget you 🍀🪼.

Great storyline with fenomenal acting of Do Hwan that makes you laugh & cry.
I was hooked from the first episode, as the drama keeps you entertained all the time. There is no boring moment or bad scene or useless character. The drama has great screenwriting, and the director has done a superb job. The drama will make you laugh and will make you cry.I have to say Do Hwan was perfect for this role; he slayed! I am really impressed with his performance, and their chemistry is amazing. They took us on an amazing journey, even though we knew it would not be a happy ending. I loved the dynamic of the drama and all the characters.
Even though you will cry your eyes out in the last episode, it's worth it. Do Hwan's acting was phenomenal. It will stay with me for a long time.

left me grieving, not just for what happened, but for what could have been...
I heard so much about Mr. Plankton when it first came out, and by the time I finally sat down to watch it, I was genuinely excited. I thought I was getting something quirky, maybe bittersweet, maybe even funny. Oh boy. This drama is trauma. You’ve been warned.!!!
Plot*
The story follows Hae-jo, a man born from an artificial insemination mistake. A clinic used the wrong donor sperm, and that single error destroys his family. Once the truth comes out, his parents emotionally abandon him, and Hae-jo grows up carrying the weight of rejection, displacement, and unresolved anger.
As an adult, he survives by running an errand service, drifting through life without roots. One day, he gets hired by a bride who wants to run away from her wedding and asks him to kidnap her. Chaos follows, landing Hae-jo in the hospital, where his life completely unravels. He’s diagnosed with a rare hereditary brain condition. Terminal. Three months left.
With death suddenly looming, Hae-jo decides to search for his biological father. But before starting that journey, he makes a decision that changes everything: he kidnaps Jae-mi, his ex-girlfriend, on her wedding day.
Jae-mi is about to marry Eo-heung, the heir to a 500-year-old Korean historical family. She’s also just been diagnosed with premature menopause, crushing her lifelong dream of becoming a mother. Despite the pain, she chooses happiness and stability until Hae-jo drags her back into his life, literally, right before she walks down the aisle.
Spoilers ahead***
This drama is tragic, not in a poetic way, but in a deeply emotionally heavy way. These characters are carrying layers of trauma, abandonment, and unresolved grief, and the story never really lets you breathe.
Watching it feels like being trapped in someone else’s emotional storm. It’s beautifully made, incredibly acted… and exhausting.
Hae-jo - A character I could not forgive!!
Hae-jo is written as a “tragic” character, and I understand why viewers might sympathize with him. Finding out you’re terminally ill, having no family, no roots, and no future, that kind of pain is unimaginable. But understanding pain does not excuse behavior!!
Kidnapping Jae-mi was wrong! It was not romantic. It was not love!! He knew there was no future for them.
He knew he couldn’t give her the life she wanted. He had once cruelly wished that she would never have children and then chose to come back into her life after learning she couldn’t.
Also his behaviour is so wrong, instead of telling her the truth, that he was dying, that he loved her, that he was terrified, he chose control. He makes decisions for her. He corners her emotionally and physically, even when she begged him to let her go.
That isn’t love. That’s entitlement. That’s resentment. That’s a wounded ego acting out.
As a viewer, you’re pushed to empathize with him because of his illness and his past. But honestly??? His actions would traumatize anyone. If he died, Jae-mi would be left carrying that damage forever.
His behavior was manipulative and punitive. He didn’t return because of love, he returned because he was dying. And if he hadn’t been, I truly believe he would have never come back at all.
Jae-mi
Jae-mi broke my heart. She grew up as an orphan, never chosen, never adopted, always waiting for a family to want her. All she ever dreamed of was becoming a mother, giving a child the love she never received.
Then she’s diagnosed with premature menopause. It’s like watching someone walk barefoot through shattered glass.
Hae-jo enters her life when she’s at her most vulnerable, and just when she finally chooses happiness real, calm happiness, he takes it away from her. She had one chance. And he stole it. If you love someone you should want the best for them, Hae-Jo behaviour sounded more like " If I can't have it, you can't have it either."
I hated the ending they gave her. Bringing Hae-jo back only reopened wounds she never had the chance to heal from. Jae-mi is kind, protective, and that goodness is exactly what traps her. Even staying with Hae-jo feels like another form of manipulation.
She deserved a future that wasn’t built on grief.
Eo-heung — The greenest flag this drama ignored
Eo-heung was everything Jae-mi needed. He loved her for her. Not for children. Not for legacy. Not for obligation. And in a society obsessed with bloodlines and continuation, that mattered.
He is the embodiment of the Korean son burdened by tradition, raised under a strict mother, expected to carry a family legacy, trained to obey rather than live freely. And yet, with Jae-mi, he was gentle, attentive, and genuinely happy.
I cannot believe the writers didn’t bring them back together.
After everything, the ending I wanted, no, NEEDED was Jae-mi and Eo-heung finding their way back to each other. They would have found a way to build a family. You could see it in him: children didn’t define his love. He loved her! As usual for the sake of romantic the plot had to remove the good guy and glorify the bad guy.
Abandonment is the beating heart of this drama. Jae-mi, abandoned as a child, growing up believing she was never enough.
Hae-jo, emotionally abandoned by the family who wanted him until he wasn’t biologically theirs. The constant fear of being replaced, discarded, or forgotten. It give this drama very heavy touch, and you are constantly reminded though Hae-jo's journey to find his biological father!
The drama also paints a sharp picture of Korean family structures, patriarchy, bloodline obsession, controlling parents, and the crushing expectation placed on men to carry family legacy at all costs.
Visually, this drama is stunning. The Korean provinces, the mountains, the wide open landscapes, honestly it was a feast for the eyes. So beautiful that make you genuinely want to visit Korea, and see all of these beautiful regions! Specially the part when they were climbing the mountain in Busan, it mad eye feel like travelling to Busan just to do that and enjoy the beautiful scenery! I found that the contrast between the beauty of the background setting and the heaviness of the story was clever mix.
There are so much I could say about this drama but I don't want make this review longer, so ...Mr. Plankton is a beautifully made drama. It’s powerful, emotionally intense, and unforgettable.
But it left me grieving, not just for what happened, but for what could have been. After everything these characters endured, I wanted a softer landing. I wanted healing. I wanted hope!

Emotional journey
This show wasn’t just entertainment; it was an emotional journey. With incredible actors, a compelling story, and breathtaking scenery, it truly had it all. Most importantly, it had heart. Every character was perfectly crafted, making their struggles and growth feel deeply personal. Even though the ending was bittersweet, by the time it concluded, you felt emotionally exhausted—but in the best way. It’s a beautiful exhaustion, a testament to the power and depth of the show. Highly recommend. Was this review helpful to you?
On pins and needles
I absolutely love this drama!!! I'm on the last episode and have been on pins and needles throughout; not wanting it to end the way I anticipate it doing so; goodness, he feels like my friend at this point and I'm worried about Jae mi, well all of them now, lol. I hope he's realized that he's had what he's been searching for this whole time--value, to those around him. I Even though I feel like I know how this is going to end, I remain hopeful that it doesn't, lol. It's such a beautiful story of love... falling into, giving up, rediscovering, treasuring, growing from, etc.; about what family really means--spoiler, it's not all blood relations, lol, and it's also a bit of a reminder of how much the small things touch us. So, people, be sure to go and do small things!! lol... Love fiercely, wholeheartedly, unselfishly, without limits (this excludes insanity and insane behavior, lol) and without regret!!! I have 10 minutes left on this last episode, so let me go... lol. i won't spoil how it ends, but i will let you know what the ending meant to me...... i don't want to but i do want to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(Was this review helpful to you?
