A Healthy Slow-Burn Romance About Shining Together
“Some people don’t steal your light. They reflect it back to you, brighter.”𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐞 is a feel-good, emotionally mature romance that stands out for its healthy relationship dynamics, strong character writing, and comforting tone. This drama truly lives up to its title.

The story follows two financially independent, accomplished adults who meet as coworkers and slowly build a relationship based on mutual respect, patience, and emotional safety.

Nice, Warm, and Easy to Watch
This is a cute and pleasant romantic drama with solid character growth and a gradual dive into the leads’ personal stories. The actors are both talented and good looking, and the couple is sweet together. The work and friendship setting is enjoyable and keeps the story moving. That said, I didn’t find anything particularly special or memorable nothing that made me giggle or feel overly excited. It’s an easy watch, perfect to pass the time, but I think it could have benefited from fewer episodes to keep the story lighter and avoid unnecessary moments.
Overall, a nice and comforting drama. 8/10

Too Many Spoilers on the internet!
“Shine On Me” actually starts with decent potential: popular leads, clean visuals, and a light modern atmosphere. The theme song is pleasant and sweet, fitting well with the youthful romance vibe. Unfortunately, none of that is enough to cover the drama’s main weakness. The biggest issue is the overly long and dragged-out storyline. The core story is very simple and could easily have been told in around 16 episodes, similar to many K-dramas. If it had been more compact, the emotions would have felt stronger and the conflicts sharper. Instead, the extended length makes many episodes feel empty, repeating the same dynamics without real progress.
This drama feels like a typical modern Chinese drama: light conflicts stretched too far, slow pacing, and an excessive focus on repetitive sweet moments. As a result, boredom becomes unavoidable, even though the actors themselves are appealing.
When compared to colossal (historical) dramas, the difference is very clear. Colossal dramas may also go in circles at times, but their core conflicts are heavier, more complex, and logically grounded whether in politics, power struggles, or moral dilemmas. There is a strong narrative reason for their length. In “Shine On Me,” however, the long runtime feels more like a production choice than a storytelling necessity.

Thankfully, not the love triangle I expected.
Tried to avoid major spoilers, but tagging just in case.--
The romance in Shine On Me takes its time, and I can see why some people might find it slow or even boring. Personally, I thought the pacing suited the story it wanted to tell. The slow build felt intentional rather than dragged out, and despite that, the chemistry between the leads is definitely there.
I was hesitant to start this drama at first because I thought it would be one of those stories where the female lead keeps going back and forth between the male lead and the second male lead. I fully expected emotional limbo, confusion, and dragged-out feelings, especially since I thought the drama began with the FL being in a relationship with the SML. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case.
There was actually nothing between the FL and the SML, it was clear from the beginning. For a long time, the FL genuinely believed her feelings weren’t reciprocated. The problem wasn’t that she couldn’t let go, but that the SML kept confusing her. He stayed vague, showed up at the wrong moments, and never clearly drew a line. What made him especially frustrating was that he had multiple chances to make things right, yet only started moving when the ML entered the picture. He projected his insecurities onto the FL, questioned her abilities, and clung to what he called a promise, even though there wasn’t a promise at all. He rejected her, never reassured her, and still somehow expected her to wait. He had the most pride and the most insecurity. While I appreciate that the drama allows him to reflect on his mistakes, I personally wished the consequences had hit harder. What I really liked, though, was that once the FL recognized this pattern, she didn’t fall back into it. Even when he tried to pull her back later, she stood her ground.
Both the ML and FL come from wealthy families, which I actually liked because it meant we didn’t have to sit through insecurity arcs about money or status. At the same time, they aren’t portrayed as out-of-touch rich characters. They’re where they are because of their own efforts. The FL does have moments early on where she doesn’t fully understand how much more difficult things can be for others, but that felt realistic rather than annoying, and she does grow from it. Her character growth is also very evident in my opinion. She learns how to value herself and choose people who don’t dim her light, whether that’s friends, family, or a partner. I also liked that both leads were able to pursue what they genuinely wanted, without being controlled by family expectations. This rich x rich pairing worked so well because there were no ego games between them.
So, instead, the insecurity shows up in other characters, especially the SML and the woman who likes him. I really disliked how this girl kept pushing the narrative that the FL only succeeded in things because of her background and connections. It felt more like jealousy she refused to admit. She wanted that story to be true because it made her feel better about herself. What made it worse was how no one around them actively defended the FL when there was no real proof to back those claims. It made sense that the FL eventually felt closer to her coworkers than to her college “friends.” I did appreciate tho that she didn’t just accept this quietly and actually stood up for herself.
The relationship between Yu Sen and Xiguang is the complete opposite of all that mess. They trust each other and communicate well. There are several situations where misunderstandings could have easily been used to create conflict, but the writers chose to let the characters communicate instead, and I really appreciated that. Yu Sen is also a very solid male lead. He gave the FL the reassurance she never received from the SML. He’s clear about his feelings and intentions and never expected her to read his mind. He’s emotionally mature, patient, and respectful. He starts off cold due to misunderstandings from before they even met, but he has never put the FL in a bad light. He never pressured her either. He simply showed up consistently when she needed him until she opened her heart to him.
One last note: I really disliked the FL’s father, while I loved her mother. Her father’s greed and pride were hard to watch, and it took a bit too long, for my liking, for the FL to finally put him in his place. He’s definitely on my list of bad cdrama fathers. I also think his affair storyline dragged longer than necessary. Her mother, on the other hand, was supportive of the FL and was steady without adding unnecessary drama. She was just as strong-headed as the FL and eventually had her own breakthrough later in the story, which was very much deserved.
The best side characters go to the FL's cousin and his parents. Thanks uncle and auntie for being there for the FL. Lots of love for them!!

high IQ and EQ in a ML character | but need a drama where also the FL is a IQ and EQ equal
What I like:- The ML is soo majestic, Amazon forest. Gentle, smart, emotionally intelligent, has both IQ and EQ, charismatic, handsome and good acting
- I really loved the idea of courtship, he had so much patience, and his smile and eyes ... omg they talked endlessly
- I really liked the maturity of the relationship between FL and her mother.
- her cousin, Jiang Rui is absolutely delicious, I loved his character.
- I like that the relationship between FL and ML is easily built.
- I like also the relationship between ML and his mother.
- I liked that for the first time in a drama I saw an entire episode with their settled and beautiful life.
What I did not like:
- FL, her character is teenager, immature, even the kisses was hard to watch.. all the parts where they have intimate communication, connection she is afraid, she is acting scared and numb, shy.
- how they transformed narcissists, toxic behaviors into better characters... which in reality is impossible... because they never heal, they never change
- a huge discrepancy between FL at work, smart, determined, ambitious and in her personal life, completely immature, spoiled, lacking emotional maturity, including in the scenes when they are married
- the role of her being a mother is completely strange , she has no physical and emotional connection with the child
- the publicity and the encouragement of digitization
I keep watched till the end as a respect for the ML acting and character and the nice relationship of her family.
In every episode I wondered what it would have been like if they had had an actress who played a more mature role, a role of a Woman and not a scared teenager. Because I have rarely seen such a masculine character. Absolutely inspirational for a balanced partnership.
I wanted to give a 10 for the ML and a 4 for FL.

The real genius of this drama is the love triangle at the centre of it. Both men start from places of coldness and rejection for various reasons, but then they diverge:
1) One is so insecure, stubborn, and stuck in his own head that he misses chance after chance to change course and confess
2) The other resists due to misunderstandings and is also stubborn and a bit cold but wakes up to the fact that he wants what he wants, and he needs to go for it and not have regret
Various realistic and kind of intriguing misunderstandings keep this slow burn romance interesting through 3/4s of it, but once the love triangle resolves, the other plot lines don't have much interest.
The acting is good enough for the limited range they are portraying in this show, this doesn't have the high highs and low lows of more ambitious and dramatic projects.
The morals are simple the key to success in love, work, life is to work hard, take risks and change course, and believe in an optimistic future. Cinematography and clothes are competent enough.
If you like Jane Austen, slow burn, love triangle/misunderstanding type plots, this one could be for you.

So not worth it
I have watched 25 episodes of this show, and literally NOTHING of substance has happened. There are lots of possibilities for character development, but the show is devoid of this. The two main characters may have some chemistry, but you would never know. They act like strangers after 25 episodes. The original premise that she stood him up after his accident is lame. They never actually met, so he really can't hold that against her, but he does...? They go to lots of beautiful places and eat tons of food, but nothing happens. They are so wooden and vanilla! I really like most of the shows Zhao Jin Mai has been in so I watched this far, but I found myself rooting for the guy she confessed to back in college, even though that, too, is an unbelievable story arc. Maybe this kiss they have as a thumbnail will happen in the last scene. Watch anything else. This is not worth your time. Was this review helpful to you?
We love a romance with character development!
Initial Review at the half way point (12/30/25):I shouldn’t love this drama. It’s so far from my normal vibe. But here I am 18 episodes in and can’t get enough.
Pros:
* Slice of life done right — I am not a fan of this genre. It typically feels boring to me. I truly can’t say what makes this different, but it has this engaging storyline that keeps you wanting more… more of our leads, more of the backstories, more of the subplots… It’s an absolutely charming story of healing and love.
* Chemistry for days — As of right now, our leads are not officially together, but they’re on the verge of it. I can’t stop grinning at their interactions and chemistry. These two can tease and flirt so naturally. I’m obsessed. Plus our ML is a walking green flag and we love to see it.
* Our leads — I find our two leads so charming. Xiguang is such a relatable FL. She is strong when she needs to be, but she has her breaking points. Watching her journey has been amazing. Yusen is equally amazing. Leave it to SWL to give us yet another Woolworth male lead who is fleshed out and so well-acted.
Cons:
* College friends — I’m so glad we don’t have to deal with these pieces of work very often. They are so unbelievably annoying. I like them in the first two episodes, and that’s it.
* Where to begin with the SML — Our second male lead is hard to describe. You ship him with the FL at the beginning, then you hate his guts, then you feel sorry for him. He is truly a complex character. I’m not entirely sure he’s truly a con on this list or not. Right now, he’s infuriating me, but something in me still wants him to find love with someone new. Who knows how I’ll feel in the second half?
All in all, this first half was solid. Nervous because we have another 18 episodes to go, but if it keeps this trajectory, then this show is shaping up to a be a hit.
Final thoughts:
“Shine on Me” just a joy to watch. It takes you on quite the journey. The second half was excellent. It delivered us a phenomenal couple to root for, squeal over, and invest in. This also has one of the best happy endings of any show. It wraps up things very well.
It wasn’t perfect. It should have been a few episodes shorter. Some of the pacing was a bit too slow for my taste so I did get a bit bored sometimes. Also I would have liked to see the SML’s story go a different and more healing direction, but overall, I enjoyed it.
Not much else to say. It was a great drama to wrap up the year.

Little unsatisfied
Things that i liked:1) liked the main leads, both of them were perfect for each other. Their whole story was good and a perfect ending too🥰❣️
2) the sml got what he deserved; he was the only bad character that got what he deserved. He was silent throughout clg when rumors of fl were spread by people saying she was trying to take him from sfl Rong which wasn't true. He never called out lies infront of others. Silence is nothing but supporting the wrong.
He inturn got rumors spread about him in his office and then he realized what he did wrong towards fl. Also him being miserable throughout...good!! Well deserved 👏
Things that i disliked:
1) Sfl yu rong absolutely deserved karma for what all she put the fl through, not only did she lie many times to sml but manipulated him and others around her. The rumors fl faced is bec of her. But nothing zero nada she didnt get any retribution at all. I wanted what all she said to sml be out there in her friends group but that never happened. I wish she got what she deserved but nothing sadly😒
2) then comes so called fls friends they were pathetic too. They stayed silent whenever this girl was putting her down it was a constant thing. Good that fl didn't go out of her way to be friends with them.
3) the times fls friends used to pity her in clg as well was after annoying...same thing never happened towards Rong and sml after what was revealed.
4) fls was pathetic guy a loser. Again he lost nothing. Neither did his mistress and daughter. They lost nothing. No karma. As the mistress said atleast rhey got few yrs of living a lavish life. I would say very lacking. He even paid their dept. Atleast if he didnt and they were gambling their way to make money for it woukd have been nice. Idk man. Very disappointing .
5) overall i felt when fl was going through something bec of bad ppl it was made around lots of people, very loud declaration type. But when retribution came a little that too. .....somehow everything became intimate and less known.

Nice Central Romance but some side characters and plots drag it down
The romance between Nie Xiguang and Lin Yusen feels genuinely believable, with excellent chemistry that builds gradually. It’s a true slow-burn, which will appeal to fans who enjoy watching relationships develop slowly over time rather than rushing into fireworks. The corporate setting adds a nice layer of realism and workplace dynamics without overwhelming the emotional core.At 32 episodes, the show is quite long. Some viewers (including me) felt a few episodes could have been trimmed, cutting out a focus on side stories that were not followed through but especially toward the later stages when the story essentially felt like it ended. But others thought the length was just right and every part served a purpose. If you decide to watch, just go in prepared for a lengthy, relaxed pace. I personally enjoyed the journey a lot, didn’t regret watching it at all, and would happily recommend it to anyone who loves heartfelt romance, slow-burn stories, and dramas set in a professional environment. It’s comforting and well-acted overall, even if it’s not perfect.
Spoilers
My biggest critique is that the main part of the story, their romance, had pretty much tied up but it dragged on to show you a lot of their life after. Like even beyond their marriage. The settled into marriage, have a kid, and career playing out. I didn’t feel like we needed to see so much of their life 10 years later — it was nice to know they stayed happy and had a child, but it started to feel drawn out. We already knew Nie Xiguang and Lin Yusen would both be successful in their careers; spelling it out in extended scenes didn’t add much for me. It almost felt like watching Sims characters live their daily routines at times, especially with all the flashbacks to their earlier relationship mixed in. I kept thinking, “Okay, they’re happy — we can leave it there.” It's that fine balance between don't end it so I can't figure out the trajectory of their life from there, but also let's not settle into the day to day where we are no longer watching an exciting romance but an old married couple.
Another "gripe" and this is more along the lines of a cultural difference is how there was any blame placed on the blind date for the accident. Yes, she might have lied to him but she had nothing to do with his accident. Even later, when it turned out main girl was not the blind date, it was a trick, they spoke as if the family had some fault with his accident even though none of them were anywhere near the scene. It is this weird fault model that I also see in Korean dramas that I never understand. Blame yourself for deciding to go. Blame the truck who hit you. But blaming the person you were supposed to meet simply because you got in an accident on the way to meet them - completely defies logic in my opinion.
The entire mutual fixation around Zhuang Xu dragged the plot a lot. It never fully made sense why Nie Xiguang held on to him for so many years when they barely had any real moments together (a tutor connection and one flirty kitchen scene). There were no deep romantic moments and he not only rejected her romantically but failed to stand up for her when others wrongly accused her. Once Lin Yusen entered the picture and they actually started building something meaningful, with genuine romance and shared moments, the lingering attachment to Zhuang Xu felt especially unconvincing. It didn't make sense for either of them to be so fixated on each other. They never had a romantic relationship just interest and flirtation. So for both of them to be hung up on each other to the degree they were, made no sense.
I also wished some side stories had better closure. For example, after Rong Rong got rejected by Zhuang Xu — I thought she might get a redemption moment or at least apologize and part as friends, but it never happened. Then there was the girl at work (Chris) who confessed to Zhuang Xu; I hoped he might eventually move on and find happiness with her or someone else, but it ends with him still seeming hung up years later. Ten years after Nie Xiguang has clearly moved on and built a life with someone else, it just didn’t feel realistic that his attachment would linger that strongly, especially since their connection was never that deep to begin with.
On the positive side, I absolutely loved Nie Xiguang’s relationship with her cousin — their scenes were always cute and heartwarming. The mothers on both sides were great too; the women in this drama were generally strong and enjoyable to watch. Her work friends felt like real, supportive colleagues, which was refreshing. In contrast, her college friends were pretty horrible to her (resenting her background in a way she couldn’t control), and it was understandable why she wouldn’t want to revisit that tension.
Zhuang Xu was a bit moody throughout, which made it hard for me to fully see what everyone saw in him at times. I kept expecting a scene years later where he finally seemed happy and moved on, but instead we get reminders that he’s still not over things.
Nie Xiguang’s parents had unfinished-feeling arcs too — her mom seemed to still have lingering feelings but never pursued anything new, while her dad showed some awareness of his past mistakes but never fully reconciled in a satisfying way. Even in the very end, we get a random update on the manipulative character moving to the same city with no clear purpose, which left me wondering why they brought her back at all.
Overall, these pacing and closure issues kept me from loving it as much as some reviewers did. I don’t agree with the super-low ratings, but I also wouldn’t put it in my top dramas or plan to rewatch it. It’s still a very good show with a sweet central romance — definitely worth watching once if you enjoy this genre, but it could have been tighter and more focused in the later episodes.

I think I Just Expected... More :/
Just want to start by saying that I love our leads, and I think this pairing was adorable. BUT after seeing him act with Tang Song Yun in Go Ahead, and her with Leo Wu in Amidst a Snowstorm of Love, the chemistry between them was just subpar. Both are visually STUNNING🥵 of course, but I didn't really get the butterflies when seeing them together, and the long process of them actually flirting and whatnot had me... wanting more. I just couldn't help but think it lacked some sparks⚡️. For me, if the leads have chemistry that's out of this world, the drama is an automatic must-watch. (Speed and Love, for example. No strong plot at all, but their chemistry was off the charts.)Story-wise, it was also whatever. Both are from affluent backgrounds, and while he had his accident that served as some big catalyst to kickstart the plot, it was almost overshadowed because they essentially just skip over it. They talk about the accident ofc, and how his career and hard work vanished because of it, but they don't really show him strongly affected by it as much as they should, considering he went to med school and residency only to suddenly go into the business world.
The workplace/business part of the story was VERY banal, and I found myself skipping over all of it. Them talking about the PV industry and growing China's influence in the world was just more typical nationalist propaganda-themes I always find ruin a good cdrama, like in Go Go Squid and You Are My Glory. Not too big of a deal, since I can just skip over it, but it did cover a lot more than I hoped-- meetings that should've been shown for two minutes tops were given too much screen time and I just got bored. The college drama with the second main lead was honestly pretty interesting at first, but then fell flat too. 🥲
There were cute parts, as expected. Without giving spoilers, the little things he notices and does for her before they get together are really adorable⛄️. Her character is pretty mature, and doesn't behave cocky despite her wealthy family, nor does she play the naive girl who just accepts defeat in every situation. She knows how to put herself first, and that was something I liked about this drama. And having solid side characters really elevates a drama's likability, but again, there weren't any worth liking lol. Her friends, some, yeah, but nobody with any real story.
Maybe my expectations were just too high, with the star leads. Maybe because I just finished Speed and Love, where I would internally scream. It was really really hard finishing the last handful of episodes...

Start from episode 4,skip the first 3 and you will like it
The first 3-4episodes is quite borinng, just START at episode 4. The past events is revelant but it does get explained in later episodes. This poor start would have caused many people to abandon it but ep 4 starting is good after thatI learnt a lot about the industry and the work life of a new graduate. Both actors did really well and I was amazed at how good at skiing Song Wei Long is (he did grow up in the NE of China where everyone ski)
Other than that, it's a good story and an enjoyable watch. Nothing epic but ok for a modern drama just to kill time and enjoy the atmosphere
Worth watching -not a 10 but definitely 8
