Slow Burn Romance and Second Chances at Life
Shine on Me(SOM) has been a quietly engaging watch so far. I’m enjoying its slow-burn approach and the steady, unhurried pace of its storytelling. Though it is yet to be one of the best dramas for me, there are flashes of genuinely wonderful moments that linger, especially in the way ML pursues the FL with a rare unpretentiousness and also the family dynamics that are portrayed. Those relationships feel reminiscent of You Are My Glory, and while I absolutely love Yu Tu and Qiao Jingjing as a couple, SOM somehow keeps nudging me back into YAMG nostalgia rather than fully eclipsing it.One of the drama’s interesting aspects is its second male lead. The SML here has narrative weight, and it’s hard not to feel for him even while consistently rooting for the ML. His insecurities feel integral to who he is—not entirely unjustified—and it’s clear the story is intentionally framing him as someone who “misses out” on being the ML in life, not because he lacks worth, but because of timing, fear, and self-doubt. In contrast, despite having his own demons to battle the ML (Yinsen) is secure in his space when it comes to his love for the FL. Yu Tu struggled with insecurities owing to his not being financially that stable in YAMG in the initial part and it is Jingjing's re-entry into his life that makes him realise how much he loves working for the outer space. While Yu Tu took the chance the third time in YAMG, in SOM it is almost as if we are seeing an alternate narrative of how a good looking, genius, aloof hero battling insecurities misses out on real happiness (Zhuang Xu). And so, midway in the drama's journey, you cannot help feeling bad for him too and like I said above, while rooting for the ML who so deserves the FL, rather whom the FL deserves so well as they are actually of similar natures, I also would hope Zhuang has his own happy closure in the drama.
I also loved Jiang Rui, the younger brother. His moments—particularly at the Changbai Mountain resort, where he tries to stand up for his sister—add warmth and emotional grounding to the story.
I appreciate that none of the characters are painted in pure black or white. Their greyer shades make them feel human, flawed, and believable.
For now, I’m content to wait and see how the story unfolds, hoping it leans fully into the emotional depth it’s been quietly building.

When green forest meets sunlight
This series is definitely up there when it comes to butterfly-inducing chemistry and green-forest main characters. What I appreciated most was how communicative and supportive the leads were, and how sure they were of their love for each other. Their relationship felt steady and reassuring, not forced or dramatic, which made it so easy to believe in them. The story itself felt very natural and realistic. The business details actually made sense and didn’t feel thrown in for the sake of plot. Even the “evil” characters didn’t come across as over-the-top villains — they just felt like people with bad attitudes and questionable morals, which made them feel real rather than fabricated for a show.
The side characters were also a strong point. Each of them brought something meaningful to their roles and added so much life to the world of the series. They made me want to stay in that world a little longer. Overall, this was a quietly nostalgic story with deeply devoted leads.

Best Drama I've ever seen for the past 3 years i'm into Chinese Drama
This actually my first time write a review about drama and upload it on web. Drama "Shine On Me" can make me not think twice to cancel the intention of giving a review. For approximately 3 years I have followed Chinese dramas (of course I also watch past dramas from year to year with various genres in them) and there are also many romance dramas that I have watched. But for some reason, Shine On Me is visually beautiful in terms of actors, storyline, cinematic, OST, and the story they want to convey is clearly read by the audience, and I did not get bored while watching it.Those of you who are looking for a light drama, but still romantic without any cringe feeling, you can try watching this drama. This is my honest review, for someone who has similar preference drama like me, you must watch it and i think you gonna like it. ^^ 谢谢
P.s : Shine On Me still on going today!

Without Lai WeiMing, I would have stopped watching because it's very boring
A promising cast, enticing trailers—I started watching SHINE ON ME without hesitation! Having never read the novel, I'd only managed to glean a few details from fans. From the very first episode, I fell under the spell of the second lead, and that might be what ruined my overall viewing experience…Indeed, the first few episodes, being part of our FL's college years, gave a lot of screen time to the second lead and "their story," and that's where I noticed three fatal mistakes.
I discovered the actor Lai Weiming in Fang of Fortune, but for me, he truly shone in Shine On Me, thanks to his striking good looks and expressive stage presence.
Why cast such a cute second lead? That was my first mistake.
2) Second mistake: giving him so much screen time! There were parts where I felt like I saw him more than the lead, and since I already had a soft spot for the actor, it definitely didn't help me prefer Song WeiLong (I'm only talking about the actors for now, not the characters.
3) And finally, the last mistake: creating all this mood around their story only to turn him into an immature guy, bordering on a red flag, by giving him unpleasant lines, incomprehensible reactions, and an alcohol addiction?? Why??? In my opinion, they sabotaged him. I would have much preferred him to be the best friend and have his own romance.
The protagonists: why didn't I feel anything? Well, because of the second lead, I had a lot of trouble connecting with the main romance despite their solid performances and Song WeiLong, whom I absolutely adore outside of dramas. Firstly, I didn't think the actress's chemistry was her best (I found her more at ease in Our Generation). Secondly, Song Weilong was too stiff and flat at times, with poorly tailored costumes. Aside from his good looks and haircut, I didn't think he was really showcased in them. And finally, the kisses took forever to appear!
Overall, without the second lead, there were two choices: either I would have been more invested in the protagonist, but again, I found their romance too bland, or I would have stopped watching this drama altogether because, overall, the story offers absolutely nothing innovative or addictive. It's cute, that's for sure, but it's also sometimes long, very long…especially with the family storylines that take up so much space in the second half.
Would I recommend SHINE ON ME? Yes and no. YES: because it's still a romance that follows all the hallmarks of a "green flag" romance, ending happily with attractive protagonists, but NO: if you prefer more developed and intense romances, and especially if you have a crush on the second lead, you're going to suffer terribly, both from the episodes and from people's comments about him. So, in the end, a mixed review, leaning more towards the negative than the positive! 4.5/10

Not my cup of tea.
I really tried to get into this drama, but it just didn’t work for me. My experience was very similar to what I felt while watching The Best Thing—another drama that everyone seemed to love and praise, yet I personally found painfully boring. So I think this comparison might help: if you enjoyed The Best Thing, chances are you’ll probably also like Shine on Me.My main issue was the pacing. There simply isn’t enough happening in the plot to justify 30+ episodes that run over 40 minutes each. On top of that, many scenes honestly felt like blatant propaganda. Anyone choosing to watch this drama is expecting a slow-burn romance, not an extended lesson on photovoltaic technology nor company management.
Another point that really pulled me out of the story was the whole conflict about LYS somehow blaming her for his car accident. The logic just wasn’t there. Even if he was on his way to meet her, the accident itself had nothing to do with her. I mean… blame the truck driver who hit you, my guy.
The OST was another major letdown. I genuinely don’t understand this recent trend of using songs with predominantly English lyrics in Chinese modern dramas. Instead of enhancing the emotional impact, the music did the opposite—it made key scenes feel cheap and unnecessarily cheesy, completely undercutting whatever feelings the drama was trying to build in my opinion.
On the positive side, the FL is cute, rich, smart, and—most of the time—not a complete pushover, which is always appreciated. The ML is also likeable, but his background was just impossible for me to take seriously. You’re telling me this man is 28 years old, already a former neurosurgeon, and then—just like that—manages to switch careers and become a fully competent director of a tech company without missing a beat? Please. That level of career whiplash completely broke my suspension of disbelief.
Honorable mention goes to the FL’s cousin, who was genuinely a great character. The siblings-like dynamic between them was always a highlight, and their banter brought some much-needed energy to the episodes he appeared in.

The male lead, by contrast, is far more engaging, charming, grounded, and genuinely pleasant to watch, which only highlights the imbalance between the two. The production leans heavily into the overly polished, makeup‑heavy aesthetic common in many C‑dramas, resulting in visuals that feel artificial rather than refined.
Overall, the slow pacing, uneven performances, and overly stylized presentation keep the drama from reaching its emotional potential.

Amazing Drama! ❤️❤️
I dont much write reviews, but for this drama. I'm going to write. Love this drama so much. looking forward for their new episodes everyday.... great chemistry for Weilong and Maimai. Weilong played the character so well, he is very expressive. I can see it in his eyes his emotions that makes the drama more interesting to watch. I also like how maimai played the innocent role nie xiguang she's so cute, charming and adorable. love them so much for their role. Remarkable and impressive!!!! it doesn't make the drama cringy. Congratulations to the team of Shine on Me: Director, script writer and all the cast of Shine on Me. ❤️❤️Was this review helpful to you?
Gets better if you can handle the first half of the drama
The first part of the drama is super hard to watch. I can’t understand why the characters that appear in the beginning are just so bad at acting, her uni friends especially. The script n directing was bad too super early 2000s style, but eventually got better like they completely changed the director. Luckily if you managed to make through that the casting got better. Can’t miss song weilong awkwardness though, i hope he will improve, he can’t be like this till the end of his career. Jinmai also seems the type to reflect her counterparts acting, if she’s paired with someone bad, her acting also becomes awkward. The good thing is, among hundreds of dramas ive watched, this one has the best last episode, showing how the mains improve and stay together till they are old, absolutely something that i wished more dramas would showWas this review helpful to you?

First love, loss & closure: a story with emotional poignancy at the start that languished at the end
I really liked this drama until episode 22, when it became boring and slow. For me, the best, most memorable part of SOM is LWM. I don’t think I would be as emotionally invested in the story if another actor played ZX, he really did a phenomenal job with his portrayal, with a lot of angst, inner turmoil, and suppressed emotion. I would like to see a drama spin-off or read a novel with ZX as protagonist.
ZJM as NXG was good too. I like her acting but the chemistry between her & SWL was not there all the time, and a lot of their romantic scenes were awkward. It might be because these didn’t flow very well with the rest of the story. I was also not convinced with SWL's acting, thought his expressions were too bland/wooden in many scenes after they got together. Although I appreciated a lot of the script & dialogue, the pacing of the story after ep 22 became uneven (too much on the business side, too much attention on NXG’s father’s mistress & comeuppance, etc.), which made the MC’s romantic moments feel unnatural and forced.
Overall, I liked the growth/development arcs of NXG & ZX, family dynamics of the MC, and the friendships with Yin Jie, Chris & Dr. Fang. Also enjoyed seeing the different sceneries in China (Changbai ski resort & desert in Dunhuang), and appreciated seeing how business was conducted, and even learning about solar panels & integrating green design into buildings (although this could have been shortened!). But as a romantic drama? I didn’t really feel it at the end.
