I placed spoilers at the end of this review.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable series. The first episode really grabbed my attention which kept me engaged to watch more. They also did a great job introducing all of the characters. Some of the main characters start off unlikable, but the script does a decent job explaining the reasonings behind their actions. For example: I didn’t like Oh Yi Young at first but grew to like this character as the series progressed. I thought the script was good with the exception of a few aspects. My main complaint is it did not fully focus on all four main characters. This was supposed to be about all of their experiences as first-year residents, but I felt the focus was mostly on Oh Yi Young in many of the episodes. They do show some character development with Pyo Nam Gyeong, Um Jae II, and Kim Sa Bi, but most of the screentime was devoted to Oh I Young. My minor complaint is they didn’t fully explore the four main characters’ backstories. This is mostly due to another minor complaint which is the romantic storyline in the script. However, the cast was incredible.

Random Notes:

You don’t have to see “Hospital Playlist” to see this series.

It was fun to see all of the actors’ quest spots from the parent series. The good thing is they were written into the script without the need to see the parent series.

This will probably be a very unpopular opinion. I enjoyed this more than “Hospital Playlist”. It took a while for me to get into that series and also found some section boring.

As much as I would like a second season to further explore Pyo Nam Gyeong, Um Jae II, and Kim Sa Bi’s characters’ backstory/development, I would not be heartbroken if we don’t get it.

******Potential Spoiler Alert******

I was not a fan of the romantic storyline involving Oh Yi Young and Koo Do Won. This is weird because I like the characters separately and the actors had good on-screen chemistry. However, I found their storyline not very interesting and it removed the focus, and screentime, from the other three main characters.

Delightful!

I enjoyed this drama so much. I actually liked it better than Hospital Playlist. I loved all of the characters and their quirky personalities. The thing that stood out the most to me was how much the characters grew over the course of the 12 episodes. It felt like this drama was longer than it was and I mean that in a good way. Very rarely do I want a season 2 of a drama but I would love another season of these 4.

Good but not great

I have to admit that I fell into the trap of thinking this would be like Hospital Playlist, but this is totally different, they both have the same vibes but with a completely different style.

Acting was great and story was the same, 4 residents and their daily struggles, personal life representation is limited, except maybe Oh Yiyoung but not the rest we literally know nothing about them.

It's a completely medical drama, romance is too little and comedy is nonexistent and dependable heavily on cameos, I believe the only time I half-laughed was at Ik Jun cameo, and maybe jeongwon but the rest of the drama was all about cases and residents struggles with work.

I hated Eun Won character very very much, she was unredeemable and very arrogant, and the ending didn't satisfy me, it's not enough for such a character, tell me why I watch a drama to get pissed off because of someone I see on daily basis 😂 she is just the worst and I've seen many like her, I literally watch drama to skip shitty people, and I also didn't like how Yi Young and Do won were treated like push overs, specially Do won!! Dude get your shit together!!!!! At least Yi Young is her hoobae!!

Watch it if
1- you like medical dramas
2- not looking for Rom-com
3- doesn't want something like hospital playlist because this is different.

absolutely loved this drama!

at first i had dropped this drama because the first episode didn’t convince me but i gave it another try since i like medical dramas and im so glad i watched it again because it’s a really well paced and realistic drama. the relationships between characters were well fleshed out and the main leads all had their own personality which made the drama more interesting and unique. some characters received a lot of development and growth such as sabi and jaeil, they’re my two favorites out of the four because they grew a lot as people and doctors, not saying the other two didn’t but i really liked their characters.

the only thing i disliked about the drama was dr. myung, she’s a very selfish and self centered person who backstabbed a lot of people and expected to be handed everything she really showed her true colors in the last episode when she had that crash out scene 💀

another thing i loved was the romance between dowon and yi young it didn’t take over the plot but it was a great addition i loved that he became down bad for her 🤭 they complemented each other well 💕

i loved that the nurses, interns and other doctors were recurrent and important characters to the story they added a nice touch to the drama and were all nicely written esp the relationships between the professors and the first year residents, i loved the relationship between yi young and her professor because she always saw potential in yi young and was a great guide and teacher to her. sabi growing closer with her professor as well was nice to see!

the cameos from characters that appeared in hospital playlist were very nice, though i wish i could’ve understood the significance behind some characters as i didn’t watch hospital playlist but watching RP has made me consider watching HP!

lastly i want to comment on how much i liked that this is a very emotional, realistic drama regarding the cases the doctors took on. the cancer patient that passed away in the last episode made me ugly cry because it was such a painful event but it’s something that happens everyday in hospitals, new life is born while some people die and it was a reality check for me that life should be appreciated and not taken for granted. i simply loved this drama and hope it receives a season 2 because the way it ended felt complete but has potential for another season!!

Lovely romance and interesting medical drama

I Really loved this show. I came into it not watching hospital playlist so the cameos were unbeknownst to me. The romance was my favorite part, it was extremely cute and the way they did it kept it from getting boring, however I wish they gave us even more moments with them. That’s why I hope for a season 2, so I can see more of them as well as the other characters.
I enjoyed watching and learning a bit more about the medical aspect. I thought it was very interesting! I would also love to see the characters in their second year.
I thought the characters had good chemistry honestly and that the four residents may not have hit it off at first, but they gradually became friends. I also like how a romance developed overtime for Oh Ji Young’s character, not love at first site. I especially liked how they already had a relationship as in laws, and one of my favorite parts was seeing them with their siblings.

A drama to watch when you want to feel at “home”.

Let me just start by saying- this is my first ever review on this platform.

After indulging in Korean dramas for almost 10 years now, you ever so often come across a drama that just makes you feel at home. For me, there have been a couple of dramas that I’ve never wanted to say goodbye to, ResPlay being one of them.

From the beginning this drama is relatable, fun, light hearted & intriguing- just the perfect watch for when you want to be comforted or receive a warm hug. From the script all the way to end result, everything about this show has been flawless. The character development is top notch. Even though they’re doctors after years of dedicated studying; they’re still just humans at the end of the day, this is their first try at life and working as well- and throughout the drama you are reminded of the same.

It evokes emotions in you of love, life, gratitude, hatred, annoyance and you feel as if you are one with the cast. It’s realistic and non-dramatic. Seeing the first year residents’ friendship blossom and their growth as individuals is truly a delight to watch.

Overall- cutting it short, I’d definitely recommend this drama to everyone who likes feeling nostalgic and at peace. Afterall, this drama feels like a warm cup of coffee on a cold and cosy rainy evening.

Another comfort drama

For me this show started slow but slowly grew on me. It's about 4 residents in OBGYN dept. We have all this different people from different backgrounds but we don't get much backstory. Hence this drama can feel incomplete. Things like why 520 has debt and her father's involvement in that is not explored. Same for pyo nam kyung. People thought there would be some explanation about her and oh yi young's remembrance of things and why she chose medical field. It seemed like inferiority complex but it's not explored. kim sa bi's background of having doctor parents could have been explored.
Things I like
-520 and ku du won's relationship- their slow burn romance was so cute!!! And ku do won himself is so adorable
-all the hospital playlist cameos!!! To see 99s was so refreshing and much welcomed. Chu mina getting to be professor over myung eun won was cherry on top
I also loved the music. It went really well with drama and it's feeling

Perfect ??

An extremely satisfying drama that got better and better each episode.

I LOVE this drama so much 🥹 After Hospital Playlist, this was automatically a must watch regardless of what it was going to be about, purely because of its predecessor's reputation. But wow - it might have struggled in the beginning to find its footing but once it did, it became a drama that is so strong all on its own with the same emotional core that Hospital Playlist had.

I feel it delivered everything it was offering and exceeded my expectations, especially towards the end. I can understand not liking it and even tuning out in the earlier episodes because I felt too that something was missing in the beginning. What made Hospital Playlist memorable and what keeps people clamouring for a third instalment is the deep bond between the 5 characters.

I certainly had that impression going in this, subconsciously looking for that similar bond and dynamic between the characters but the earlier episodes obviously did not have that. And for good reason, these are people meeting each other and working together for the first time and are also at the beginning of their careers. There's an atmosphere of awkwardness, being unsure and out of their leagues, all of which seem to be the opposite of what Hospital Playlist was.

But if you just carry on watching, these exact things that made it seem awkward and disconnecting are the exact tools that made it so endearing to watch later on. Where it felt like the director/writer didn't seem to know what to do with all of these in the beginning, the second half felt impressive because it became visible how intentional all the details were. They knew exactly what they were doing and reminded me once again that these are the people behind Hospital Playlist. The main characters' evolution, the hurdles they faced and their relationship with the supporting cast created this warmth that made the Yulje universe what it is - a familiar warm space. Being surrounded by difficult and real circumstances but having supportive, competent and people willing to learn and grow made it feel like a place you can feel safe in despite the worries.

I even liked how they portrayed the annoying characters, Eun Won & Joon Mo because what they portrayed really do happen in real life. You can't always win against them but having people who'll support you makes it that bit better and also you learn how to face them over time.

The main leads are perfect. GYJ is amazing in this, she really nailed her character. She was just a joy to watch, from being the annoyed, can't be bothered character to being competent and passionately in love at the same time, she portrayed OYY so perfectly. One of the best characters for me. SSA's character felt a bit ambiguous in terms of where her arc was going but the times when she had the emotional scenes always got me. And the end episode which really rounded off her character's arc and development was so perfectly executed. I felt like that cemented the start of her growth and identity in her field and her portrayal was so convincing, I was so happy for that mini something in the end for her.

KYS's portrayal of Jaeil is just so adorable and warm, others have said he's got maternal instincts and that's true. He's naturally caring and I could see myself in him in that I also was very unsure and would jump to the worst conclusions. And who hasn't been moved when that scene happened and he looked tearfully at GDW? That was soooo well acted, that might be one of my most favourite scenes in this, it was so subtle but a lot of people would be able to relate I feel.

Regarding HYJ's character, I think KSB took a while later compared to others for me to warm up to her character. The earlier happenings didn't help either but I believe OYY's reaction was a make or break in terms of getting the audience to root for KSB. Thankfully things turned around and I came to adore her character and I love how they stayed true to her and still managed to convincingly show how she's changed and grown. I think it's one of the most satisfying parts of this drama.

GDW - who wouldn't want a senior like him? He's too perfect but he's got the qualities I have seen in others, esp. when I just started working too. The people who made you feel safe and who's got your back. But honestly he is a great senior and not totally a pushover, because you could see how he was willing to be disagreeable when it comes to others (defending OYY, reprimanding her, with KSB and the consent form, and with OYY & PNG).

The romance - honestlyyyyy wasn't expecting the pace with which they went with this! And they did it so well. This was the first Kdrama in a long time that made me feel as I did the first time I watch kdramas. I usually wait for series to finish airing because I hate waiting but I started this in its first week and I ACTUALLY loved waiting each week and reading other people's thoughts, watching edits 😂 in between??? I think that was part of the great experience of watching this drama. The anticipation every week, and honestly, the love line has a big part to play in that.

One of the best chemistry and it came from a drama I didn't expect to have romance. Maybe that's why it was great? Anyway, the writing, the build up, the direction and ofcourse, the acting, was PERFECT. One of the most satisfying romance ever, nothing was forced and no annoying issues that's pulled out of thin air. This was perfectly executed and the actors are amazing. GYJ's portrayal of OYY in love was so satisfying and impressive to watch. The way her eyes and her whole demeanour changed when she looks at GDW looked so natural. And the way GDW was holding back was so respectful and matured and I absolutely love that bus stop scene. I think I was just smiling the whole time when they were finally dating. I definitely didn't expect GDW to act that way but they both deserve to be so utterly in love and not hold back. They really deserve each other, both so sure of their feelings and very committed.

I love how they showed their sincerity - OYY rejecting DH and being steadfast, GDW giving her time to see if she really does like him or if it's just the 1st year sensitivity talking but willing to take responsibility once he did give in (openly showing affection and thinking of their future - eg saving for marriage).

KSB & Jaeil's romance was unexpected to me because I just didn't see it coming but reading other people's observations of the small details was quite amazing. I was one of those that thought Jaeil liking her seemed out of nowhere and just because o f her being a fan but when he started to show he does like her, I could see the vision and started to see how adorable they are together😭. I mean, Jaeil is naturally caring and I remember him spraying something on SB's clothing and wiping it without being even aware of it but SB noticed. That was so sweet.

PNG and TGO - sooo cute! The other romances obviously are just starting to come to life and it would be nice to be able to see that. I love our main leads together, their personalities just mesh so well. So different but they just let each other be and are comfortable in that fact. I will miss them being in the lounge discussing, eating and bickering together. Don't even let me start with their relationship with the professors 🥹. Plus those cameos. It's so nice to see them again but my favourite are Iksong & Gomgom couple's cameos, DJH!! (so funny lol) plus JW's - I think that cameo was put in so well. The child actress was really good too which made it more touching. Ah remembering OYY's reaction and finding out about her mother, one of my favourite scenes. She expressed those emotions so well, someone bottling things up because there's just soo much to feel if she lets it all out. It was so sad.

And ofcourse, this drama felt more homely and cosy because of OYY's sister and brother in law 😭 I just love all of the scenes with them but especially that beansprout scene lol. Oh, plus the birthday scene. I love how passionately her brother in law was singing to her and how he takes care of her too 🥹. I would love a season 2 not only because there's more to show, but also because I just want to see more of them together 😭.

Overall, watching the drama was an amazing ride. The waiting, anticipation, others thoughts and being excited together made the experience so much more solid. It honestly is such a well rounded drama and it ended in such a high that there are no lingering feelings. It was so satisfying. Like Hospital Playlist, I can just watch this drama season after season. Because it is slice of life, there are many avenues to explore and show which I would love to see especially since this drama was executed so well but it really did cover everything and well exceeded my expectations.

Highly recommended.

Relatable and Emotional

I am biased towards Go Youn Jung as she is my most favorite actress ever, and that's why i can't find any faults in her acting or the drama. To me, this drama is absolutely beautiful. It doesn't fail to match the vibe of Hospital Playlist and I love Resident Playbook more since we can see their friendship slowly building and blooming into a strong bond, and that is very wholesome to see.

The residents interactions with the patient made me tear up so many times, though Sabi hasn't had many meaningful interactions with her patients, but that one patient she had to apologize to was pretty nice to see.

This drama is a slice of life, unlike from general fast paced kdramas that are full of thrill and drama, and this is one of the many reasons why I love this so much.

And that one scene where OYY and KSB operated together made me bawl!

Overall, I really love this drama and wish it all the success in the world. I also strongly support the making of a second season as well!

Can't compare and it shouldn't compare to Hospital Playlist

This series started slow for me and I was expecting so much more. I kept wanting it to be like Hospital Playlist but it was not. Once I stopped wanting it to be Hospital Playlist and started appreciating it for what it was, I started to enjoy it, I saw the personalities and complexities of each of the characters, and better understood the purpose of the narrative. It was a well made series with a fantastic cast, and, yes, endearing cameos for Hospital Playlist fans. The creators and writes of this series have collaborated on other amazing series (Hospital Playlist, Reply 1988, and Prison Playbook) and I hope they keep collaborating together and bring us more quality series.

Funny and Heartfelt but Sometimes Aimless

Resident Playbook had a mix of charm and slow moments. I really liked the comedy throughout the show. It felt natural and brought a lightness to the story that made the characters easier to connect with.

One of my favorite parts was how the characters were all so different yet still managed to bond. Each one had their own personality, background, and struggles, but they worked hard and supported each other in a way that felt honest and real. It was nice to see a drama highlight the effort and pressure that comes with being in the medical field.

Still, there were parts that felt boring. Some scenes seemed to have no clear purpose and didn’t really move the story forward. It made the pacing feel off in a few episodes and left me wondering what the point was.

In the end, Resident Playbook had heart and humor, but it would have been better with a tighter storyline. If you like character-focused dramas with a mix of funny and touching moments, it might be worth checking out.
