Motel California

Motel California started with a couple of promising episodes that had me wanting more; however, it went downhill rather quickly after that. What could have been an engaging story turned into a frustrating mess, with a lack of communication between characters and, worse, zero chemistry between the main leads.

The biggest issue? Na In Woo. After some miraculous weight loss transformation (because that’s totally original), he takes over as the lead, and the drama nosedives even further. His acting is as exaggerated as ever—he’s the undisputed champion of overacting, turning every scene into a melodramatic mess. If you’ve seen his older works, you already know what to expect: over-the-top expressions, awkward delivery, and an inability to carry emotional depth.

The worst part is that this could have still been watchable if they had leaned into comedy. Instead, the writers actually thought they could make a serious drama out of this weak "lost childhood love" plot. The story kept going in circles for what felt like an eternity, only to lead to an oddly unsatisfying ending. It felt rushed and sloppy. Too many unnecessary side plots were added, only to be either completely forgotten or hastily wrapped up in a way that made them feel pointless.

And then there's the dialogue—absolutely terrible. One of the most ridiculous moments was when the second male lead actually told the male lead, "Please transfer the ownership of Kang Hee Si to me." This just proves how Korean society—or at least this drama—treats women as objects that can be owned and transferred. What kind of writing is this? It’s 2025, not a feudal-era drama!

Ironically, Na In Woo is only getting attention now because of his recent hit drama, which, let’s be real, was a success solely because of Park Min Young. His presence had little to do with it, yet suddenly, he’s being cast as a leading man. Motel California is proof that popularity doesn’t always equal talent.

If you’re looking for something engaging, skip this one. The slow pacing, uninspired plot, terrible dialogue, and Na In Woo’s unbearable acting make it a tedious watch.

Feelings So Far

I'm only on episode 3 and this story has definitely got me intrigued, but confused as well. The FL is too good for money apparently and would rather starve than have her work acknowledged and have a job. (She worked so hard for days just to say no to the money... What?) And the ML, while having a career and friends, is so very hung up on this FL that has only abandoned him and not treated him with the same love and respect that he treats her with. He's too passive and too attached and the FL is too selfish, cold, and demanding.

The 2nd ML, who I didn't even realize was the 2nd lead at first, has me very intrigued. I never feel this way about 2nd leads and hate the idea of love triangles as a whole, but I'm interested in him. I want them to do a lot more with his character and to really develop the leads a lot more. This story needs a lot of work, but it's got potential so far.

The FL's relationship with her father is completely bizarre though. I need that explained asap. I also need them to explain the grandfather they killed off too. Like I don't even know who this guy is, why am I supposed to care that he died in this story. They haven't fully got me invested in these leads yet and I find that to be strange writing for a drama about them.

Anyways, I want to know more, and I'll be back to update this as I get further along. Here's hoping it's going to be a good one, because I need a good show right now. 6/10 tentatively (I hope it won't be down there long)

Chata e cansativa

Custamos terminar esse drama aqui em casa. A princípio parecia legal mas foi um drama extremamente chato, cansativo, a história não se desenvolvia, quando parecia que ia caminhar alguma coisa, voltava ao ponto inicial. A sensação é que ficava rodando em círculos e a história não chegava em lugar nenhum, os protagonistas são insuportáveis, os secundários nem sei o que dizer, os únicos personagens que ainda salvo na real é o diretor, a ceo lá, a Esther e as crianças, de resto é um amontoado de chatice, gente tóxica e gente sem sal. Não vou condenar 100% pq eu aproveitei uma coisinha aqui e ali na série, mas tem mais coisa negativa do que positiva, se a gente aqui em casa não tivesse acompanhado em tempo real de lançamento, talvez pelos comentários eu nem começaria kkkkkkkkkkk minha esposa disse que merecia um 6 pra ser generosa, pra mim é um 5 e um 5 tá generoso até demais pra chatice que foi ter que aguentar 12 episódios dessa série, e ainda bem que foram só 12.
Ao mesmo tempo que tava vendo essa, tava vendo Love Scout, que é uma série muito boa por sinal, gostosa de assistir, já essa .. pra terminar ela foi doído demais.
Tem que ter coragem pra terminar, porque foi um porre 😂

Una serie che aspirava a distinguersi ma che ha puntato a un obiettivo di fatto non ben definito.

Titolo singolare e avvio promettente. Se il bullismo per il sovrappeso è cosa già vista, la discriminazione etnica non è così frequente nei drama asiatici (la protagonista viene giudicata per via della madre, dalla quale peraltro ha ereditato l’insolito colore degli occhi, i capelli e le lentiggini). La serie prende il via con i due adolescenti emarginati, apparentemente legati da un’amicizia grazie alla quale si sostengono a vicenda. All’insaputa di lui, lei è però in procinto di voltare pagina e ricominciare una nuova vita a Seul: nell’addio ci scappa la prima volta di entrambi.
Dal secondo episodio si ha il salto temporale in avanti di anni, lei che torna per un funerale, i due che si incontrano: lui, ora un uomo affascinante, senza più occhiali e chili di troppo, ancora palesemente innamorato di lei, sembra aver vissuto in un’eterna e inconcludente attesa. Lei si ritrova catapultata nella realtà dalla quale era fuggita, dal rapporto difficile col padre alla cerchia di persone che conoscono la sua storia e che, dedite ai pregiudizi, la fanno sentire ancora etichettata e giudicata come un tempo. Lei, quindi, è combattuta tra una situazione che non è mai riuscita ad affrontare e il sentimento per Yeon Su. Con lui c’è un continuo rincorrersi a vicenda dettato da un pessimo tempismo (meccanismo che può avere senso una prima volta ma che proposto così a ripetizione stufa). Lei risulta molto capricciosa: lo allontana ma poi lo cerca, pretende rimangano solo amici ma non disdegna effusioni. Lui subisce, da sempre e apparentemente per sempre: praticamente è in balia di lei e dei suoi mood quotidiani. Verso la fine, un aneddoto – evitabile – su un episodio cruciale del loro comune passato torna a galla e diventa l’ennesimo ed ultimo ostacolo di questo tira e molla infinito. Ovviamente si rivelerà superabile, dipanando alcuni dubbi legati al passato e lascerà spazio a una conclusione abbastanza scontata.
A conti fatti, la parte forse più emozionante è quella legata al rapporto padre-figlia, che concentra negli ultimissimi episodi un vero e proprio sviluppo tra questioni passate e prospettive future

Il cast non mi ha entusiasmata. Conoscevo già l’attrice protagonista, molto apprezzata in altri drama, ma devo ammettere che le sue interpretazioni iniziano a sembrarmi un po’ tutte simili.
A livello di musiche, “Here I am” meritevole di finire nella mia playlist.

Tirando le somme, “Motel California” – e a questo punto ci si chiede il perché di questo titolo, già che non ha avuto alcun significato particolare se non la denominazione dell’albergo di famiglia – sembra inizialmente promettere un viaggio verso una destinazione nuova, salvo poi perdersi per strada e non arrivare di fatto da nessuna parte. Non è nemmeno brutto, sicuramente in certi meccanismi è molto ripetitivo, ma il vero problema è che arrivati alla fine lo si archivia come quella serie vista ma già pronta per essere dimenticata e che non si avrà certo voglia di rivedere una seconda volta.

Can love heal your childhood traumas ?

PLOT: The "gangsters", a group of different children, harassed in their small town, grew up very united. The FL (mixed race child - Dead mother - living in her father's motel) fleed at the age of 20 to go to Seoul. She experienced very difficult times, poverty, but ended up becoming an interior decorator. Years later, she returns to her hometown to renovate a motel, and meets again her "gangsters" including her "soul mate", the ML who became a veterinarian (dead father, lives with a psycho mother married 4 times). Will this difficult return allow the FL to confront her traumas?

### Heavy story, with an unbearable & immature FL (she has trauma, OK, but even so !!!), the ML's mother who really needs therapy but whom everyone puts up with, contrived coincidences, the unexplained change of heart of the harassers, etc.

=> The bad writing spoils a great cast and a good plot :(

La FL (enfant métis - mère DCD - habitant ds le motel de son père) a tt quitté à 20 ans pr partir à Séoul. Elle a vécu des moments très difficiles, la pauvreté, mais finit par devenir décoratrice d'intérieur. Elle revient ds sa ville natale pr rénover un motel, et retrouve son "âme sœur", le ML devenu vétérinaire (père DCD, mère psycho mariée 4 fois) et ses amis. Ce retour difficile permettra-t-il à la FL d'affronter ses traumas ?

### Story pesante, avec une FL insupportable & immature (traumas OK, mais qd même), la mère du ML qui devrait se faire soigner mais que tt le monde supporte, des coïncidences grossières, le revirement des harceleurs inexpliqué, etc.

Decepcionante e nojento

Assisti aos dois primeiros episódios e pretendia esperar aos demais episódios, mas bastou para mim. Chega!!
A primeira impressão que tive sobre a FL é de que ela é um vadia e promíscua. A cena em que eles transam era para parecer romântica, mas deu outra impressão, deu um ar de vulgaridade para a FL. Depois de assistir o segundo episódio, tive certeza.
Senti, também, que a FL é uma pessoa extremamente rude e agressiva. Ela não consegue lidar com as suas próprias frustações e fracassos e apenas parte para agressão das pessoas. O pior, a trama tenta convencer a que está assistindo que isso é uma coisa boa, que é atitude de uma personalidade firme. Não entendo os escritores coreanos, que para retratar uma FL firme sempre recorrem as mesmas práticas: Ela tem que ter vários homens interessados nela e ela é sempre rude com as outras pessoas. Isso é nojento.
O drama não parece nada com romance, está mais para um melodrama barato.
Pelo bem do ML, espero que ele não fique com a FL. Espero que o ML encontre uma pessoa maravilhosa e siga sua vida e deixe a FL tóxica.
