Love’s Ambition was such a good watch. I really enjoyed it in the beginning, and although my interest started to waver toward the end, overall, I still liked it. What immediately stood out to me was how the drama started with the couple already married. That alone felt refreshingly different from the usual “meet, fall in love, misunderstand, separate” formula. We were dropped straight into the chaos of two people who looked perfect on the outside but were slowly crumbling underneath the surface. It made for such an intriguing start; watching them navigate love, ambition, and pride while keeping up appearances.

Zhao Lusi absolutely ate this role. She looked incredible in every single outfit, from elegant dresses to chic casual fits, she radiated confidence and style in every frame. But beyond her looks, what really pulled me in was how naturally she expressed emotion. Zhao Lusi has that rare ability to say a thousand things just through her eyes, the way she smiles while clearly holding back pain, or pretends to be fine when she’s breaking inside. Every little flicker of emotion felt real. She played Xu Yan with such layered vulnerability that you couldn’t help but root for her, even when she wasn’t entirely honest.

William Chan also did great as Shen Haoming. On the surface, he was the perfect husband: gentle, composed, attentive, basically the dream partner. But beneath that calm exterior, he was detached, emotionally distant, and unaware of how much damage that perfection was doing. The irony is that while Xu Yan built a life based on lies and pretense to be worthy of him, he was doing his own pretending, too. Watching him slowly realize how deeply he actually loved her too late, of course, was both satisfying and frustrating. Their chemistry though? Off the charts. From their subtle glances to their more intense scenes, you could feel the tension, the push and pull, the unspoken longing. They made the relationship feel messy, real, and painfully human.

The tone of the drama was also a great mix: flirty, serious, silly, and occasionally heart-wrenching. It had all the elements that make a modern romance addictive, and both leads carried that energy effortlessly. But what stood out most to me was Xu Yan’s growth. After all the lies, the fake background, the made-up image, the exhausting act of trying to fit into a world that wasn’t hers, she finally learned to live for herself. She learned to stop performing and start being real. That part of her journey was honestly the most beautiful thing about the drama. Which is exactly why I kind of wish she hadn’t gone back to Shen Haoming. I know, I know, he regretted everything, realized his feelings, chased after her, got jealous, and groveled like his life depended on it. But still, after everything she’d been through, I wanted her to choose herself this time. She deserved a clean slate, free from the lies she once created for him. But hey, I guess it’s drama land for a reason, they love their reconciliations, no matter how bittersweet.

All that said, Love’s Ambition was still a gorgeous and emotionally engaging ride. Zhao Lusi and William Chan’s chemistry carried the show, the fashion and visuals were stunning, and the emotional beats hit where they needed to. Even if I didn’t love the ending, I can’t deny that it was a passionate and beautifully told story about love, self-worth, and learning when to stop pretending.

Mature storytelling, clever and funny writing with superb acting.

❤️This isn't your typical, frothy romance. It’s a sophisticated, character driven story for those who appreciate emotional depth and realism.
The drama follows the complex marriage between glamorous anchor Xu Yan (Zhao Lusi) and elite businessman Shen Hao Ming, a marriage strained by class differences, carefully curated images, and personal ambition.

The journey is less about fairytale love and more about painful growth, rebuilding after betrayal, and two people shedding their facades to find themselves and each other.💙
Side note: My favorite Character was her mother-in-law 😳
OK! Why you should watch!
💕 Substance Over Spark: The focus is on emotional complexity and character growth. The conflicts stem from layered issues like family, identity, and social climbing, not simple misunderstandings.
Xu Yan’s journey from a place of neglect to self-made success feels earned and deeply moving.

🏆 A Performance for the Ages: Zhao Lusi proves once again why she is a formidable force. Her portrayal of Xu Yan is a masterclass in subtlety you feel every ounce of her inner pain, quiet determination, and hard-won resilience.
Given her difficult year, this role cements her dramatic prowess.

🎬 Exceptional Craftsmanship: The visuals, styling, and ambience are top-tier. Costumes and settings aren't just beautiful; they intelligently reflect character psychology and public facades.

🏆🏆🏆 Quiet Success Story: Despite launching with almost zero promotion (due to circumstances many are aware of), the drama has achieved remarkable success through word-of-mouth.

It recently dominated the Tencent Video Golden Penguin Awards 2025, winning
🏆Blockbuster Drama of the Year,
🏆Drama of the Year, and
🏆VIP Members' Favorite Drama of the Year, alongside awards for
🏆Best Styling,
🏆Producer, and
🏆Director.

⚠️ A note for pacing: Be aware the tone is initially heavier and more melancholic, with a deliberate pace that savors emotional moments. (but some of the funniest and heartwarming scenes too) 💙

The early episodes build tension, so it requires a little patience, but the payoff in character development is significant.❤️❤️❤️

Title should be On n On Hiding Secrets

So far. Its just bunch of people coming risking identity and background reveal, boring.

Basically recycling the same overused C-drama formula: endless melodrama, dragged-out misunderstandings, and unrealistic character decisions designed only to stretch episodes. The pacing often feels bloated, like the show could’ve told the same story in half the time. And while the drama sells itself as deep and ambitious, it sometimes leans more on clichés and exaggerated conflicts rather than genuine character growth. In short, it’s not as groundbreaking as fans make it out to be.

Love’s Ambition: Rediscovering Each Other

🔹 Would I rewatch? Yes.
🔹 You know how you can instantly love a song from the first beat or recognize your favorite dessert after one bite?
🔹 Dramas are similar; you can quickly tell if the pace, chemistry, and story work.
✨ What happens when love is built on image and influence instead of trust?

📕 Overview
🔹 32 episodes, romance, drama
🔹 Adapted from the web novel "Da Qiao Xiao Qiao" by Zhang Yueran
🔹 Zhao Lusi plays Xu Yan, an aspiring television host who appears confident on screen and manages her public image.

🔹 William Chan plays Shen Hao Ming, a wealthy city guy who seems put-together.

🔹 The story begins when Xu Yan, an aspiring TV anchor from a modest background, starts a relationship with accomplished urban elite Shen Hao Ming. Their differences in upbringing and status quickly surface, shaping the path ahead

🔹 At the time of this review, only the early episodes have aired, and you can see them navigating big expectations for their future together

🌸 How It Felt Watching
🔹 The initial episodes felt like entering a carefully crafted world where appearance is as significant as emotions.
🔹 I was captivated by Zhao Lusi's portrayal of Xu Yan; her attitude and ambition feel refreshing.
🔹 William Chan doesn’t reveal much on screen, which makes me want to understand him better.
🔹 The drama’s about love and trust, but what stood out to me was how each character tries to protect themselves and still connect

✨ Cast & Acting
🔹 I enjoy seeing Zhao Lusi take on a sharper, more serious role. She effectively portrays the ambitious anchor while still making it easy to root for her.
🔹 William Chan seems reserved. While I wanted more expression at times, it suits his character, so I understand.
🔹 The rest of the cast fills out the story and adds tension and conflict where it counts.

🎞️ Production Style
🔹 Sets are contemporary and sometimes reflect the current trend in lifestyle.
🔹 The drama shifts between office power struggles, upscale residences, and the behind-the-scenes life of a TV studio.

☕ Tea Notes
🔹 What worked: The setting, engaging chemistry between the characters, and the way the show intertwines ambition and romance.
🔹 What could be better: At times, I wished for more genuine reactions and real emotions, especially from Shen Hao Ming.
🔹 Would I rewatch? Yes, I like dramas that weave together the chaos of life with the drive for ambition, creating a captivating narrative
🔹 I noticed some small flaws along the way, but I overlooked them because I genuinely connected with the cast and the show’s themes.
☕ SpillTheDramaTea’s Rating: 10/10
🌿 Tea-Scale: Perfect Cup
✏️ Can success and love really work together when so much is hidden?

I'M SO PROUD OF ZHAO LUSI AND ALL THE CAST!

Tbh, I honestly didn’t expect this drama to air this year, but seeing Zhao Lusi take on such a mature and emotionally heavy role makes me so proud of her. She truly brought this character to life it feels like she’s personally going through every emotion, and that level of realism is rare.

She’s always been known for her funny and lighthearted roles, but with this drama, she’s proven that she’s so much more than that. She’s shown incredible depth and versatility, proving all her haters wrong that she’s not just a one-type actress, she can handle any role beautifully!

I really hope one day she’ll have the freedom to explore even more diverse roles and work with different teams, because she deserves it. I’m just so proud of how far she’s come, and I hope we’ll all continue to support her no matter what! ❤️

My reviews UpTo episode 8 ( to be continued )

I devoured the first eight episodes in one sitting. It was completely to my liking. It's a rare show with a compelling narrative, starting with a bang.

The first 6 episodes, without any drag, pull the audience right into "Xu Yan's battle." We're treated to Zhao Lusi's portrayal of Xu Yan, a woman trying to rise from the bottom of society and escape the pain of her family. She navigates the treacherous workplace and the struggles of love, refusing to lose herself in her own desires, refusing to be sentimental, and facing her desires with a clear "want" written all over her face as she pursues her life's purpose.

The high-energy scenes of Xu Yan tearing apart her competitors in episodes 7 and 8 are incredibly satisfying, stress-relieving, and truly captivating. They're another highlight of the series, highlighting Xu Yan's ruthless character.

Love's Ambition narrative rhythm, its immersive narrative style that keeps the audience on edge, represents the innovation and breakthrough that Chinese dramas so desperately need. Xu Yan has finally broken free from the stereotypical heroine. Imperfect but perceptive, she maintains a strong and courageous demeanor, personally embracing the game and orchestrating its strategies.

Of course, Xu Yan's ruthlessness isn't aimless; it's the inevitable result of the intertwined narratives laid out in the first six episodes.

Xu Yan dares to look directly into her heart, her undisguised desires written across her face. She exists to defy the traditional Chinese drama stereotype of women being "subtle and tolerant." She eschews the clichés of the self-admiring "sacrifice for love."

Instead, she possesses a clear sense of purpose and a knack for leveraging resources. By observing the conflicts within the wealthy women's circle through ball-picking, and by helping Mr. Qu connect with resources, she transforms "favors" into tangible leverage.

The freshness of this characterization lies in her unwavering resilience and adaptability.

Of course, Xu Yan's attraction stems from her charm, not just her ruthlessness, but also her underlying kindness amidst the jungle of lies. She changed her surname to "Xu," taking her grandmother's as her sole support, unwilling to let her participate in her "scam," forcing her to regretfully miss her wedding. Seeing her grandmother's self-deprecating self-deprecation, Xu Yan rarely reveals her inner emotions, tears welling up in guilt. Meanwhile, Shen Haoming, attentive to her and considering her career, arranged a surprise for her. The deep affection she expresses towards her lover and the emotional struggles she endures are vividly portrayed in scenes where she smiles and cries.

In these episodes, Love's Ambition not only allows us to witness Xu Yan's ruthlessness and determination, but also, through the director's masterful camerawork, embodies her inner struggles in light and shadow. When she discusses her grandmother, the camera illuminates the sincerity in her eyes. The interplay of reality and illusion precisely depicts her oscillation between the facade of "Xu Yan" and the true nature of "Qiao Yan." Furthermore, clever transitions and clips of flowing sleeves suggest that her composure stems from foresight and hard work.

The greatest success of Love's Ambition lies in its portrayal of an imperfect heroine. Xu Yan is resourceful and capable of lying, but every decision she makes is driven by her instinct for survival and her desire for dignity. In a market where a sense of life is a rarity, this ruthless character, who doesn't mince words or hide her true intentions, is undoubtedly a powerful force in the industry. After all, women who dare to admit their desires and take control of their lives should be so dazzling.

Drama drought fixer

“If you want to seize every chance to change things around, never pin your hopes on someone else”.

This line from 3rd episode I feel is not only reflective of her drama character but i feel applies to what we’ve seen her experiencing in her life. As Xu Yan, she’s the neglected child, having to rise to her ideal through own hard work. In her personal life, she fell sick to a very serious disease that left her nearly vegetative with a recovery that was harrowing. On top of that, she has been battling her agency that she’s made known have treated her badly. As fans, she’s missed on the screen. This drama though, filmed before her illness has been the great anticipation. Throughout the year, teasers have spread about its release. Without promotion, it appeared. Now it’s on fire, spreading wildly. Her dedication to her art is evident as this has risen to some ground breaking firsts. Its popularity also is a result of people who have come to support her. Kindness begets kindness. Her love for people, even when it’s inconvenient (putting her vulnerable recovery publicly to bring awareness to her decease, compensating cancelled events, bringing attention to village farmers products resulting, and so much more). Zhao Lusi shines her light that transcends not just in china but globally. Her actions is her agency, her cure, her humanity.

The reason this not so new plot line is doing so well is the leads of course. This is a great pairing. They really do compliment each other and if anyone has any complaints about age, I think it’s silly. Just as the pairing for Dating in the Kitchen was great, this is just as well. Though it’s not my trade, I’d think it’s how you approach a script. You read it, study it, adjust as needed to make it work. Thus, the big success of both dramas with age gap. Directing is superb as well. Each episode is filled with connections and not just fillers. Script writer is commendable. The dialogues are understandable with the right amount of lines adoptable and adaptable to life. A good script needs good actors to make its mark. Check, check, and check. Supporting cast are just as commendable. All around a wonderful cast brings a delightful fluttering worth romance worth the anticipation.

I’m up to ep 22 currently and nothing is disappointing this viewer. I’m glued in to every word, emotions, actions and it’s my dopamine after each day of work. (Sadly it’s coming to an end too fast). It really is very good. Join in.

All done! Everything wrapped, great drama, HE.

The pace of first half is fast and the plot is intense. I was even more nervous than Xu Yan!! I was afraid she would be exposed! I originally thought they might not have a strong chemistry, but it turns out they are surprisingly a good match! Their acting is spot on! The male lead has a strong sexual dynamism! Experience always brings the best! The director's vision is indeed the best! It's one of those dramas that will make you jump into the story in a second if you need to go to the bathroom or watch some interludes later! The first few episodes already have so many highlights! It's a must-see!

2nd half has different genre, it’s changed from a melodrama to urban RomCom with slower pace, in here we experience a good laugh, you can see more intense and good chemistry between the leads

Overall it’s a good Urban slice of life romcom

“Modern Romance, Complicated Hearts”

Honestly, this drama was the most emotionally stressful modern drama I’ve seen 😅💔. The story is strong, the characters are interesting, and the acting is impressive, but the constant cheating in the relationship made it hard for me to fully enjoy it 😕💔. The romance starts and develops with deception and infidelity, which kept me feeling tense and frustrated rather than relaxed.

The plot follows Xu Yan, an ambitious and elegant anchorwoman 💼✨, and Shen Hao Ming, a successful and charming man. Their relationship seems perfect at first glance, but it’s built on manipulation and secret affairs 😳🎭. Even as their feelings deepen, the cheating continues to complicate their bond, making it difficult to root for them completely ❤️‍🔥⚡. The story is modern, intense, and full of emotional highs and lows, showing how ambition, desire, and personal mistakes intersect with romance.

What I loved most was the acting and chemistry between the leads 🌹. Zhao Lusi and William Chan deliver convincing performances, capturing both the passion and the tension in their complicated relationship 💞. A modern couple whose relationship is as much about ambition, image, and power as it is about love. It moves beyond simple romance into something rawer and more psychologically complex. The production values are polished, and the modern settings — from elegant offices to intimate personal spaces — enhance the story’s emotional impact ✨🏙️.

But—there’s a “but”. The core of their romance is built around cheating, manipulation and lies. 😕💔 Xu Yan’s crafted identity and Haoming’s control over elements of their marriage made it difficult to fully root for their relationship. Whenever they tried to repair things, I found myself asking: Based on what? Also, the narrative sometimes dragged in the middle episodes as it kept circling around the same emotional loop rather than pushing forward. Some scenes felt heavy rather than hopeful. 🕰️

At its heart, Love’s Ambition is a modern romance that isn’t afraid to show scars — ambition‑driven choices, love tainted with mistrust, and redemption that has to be earned. 🌹🔥 If you're okay with a messy love story, filled with cheating and power‑dynamics, and prioritizes growth over instant emotion, this will intrigue you.
