This was an absolute waste of time

My Girlfriend Is the Man! (2025), directed by Yoo Kwan-mo, promised a fresh take on romance with its gender-swap premise, but it stumbles disastrously, delivering a production that feels tone-deaf, poorly executed, and riddled with offensive undertones. Adapted from a Naver webtoon, the drama follows Kim Ji-eun (Arin), who transforms into a man (Kim Ji-hoon, played by Yoo Jung-hoo) due to a hereditary condition, and her boyfriend Park Yoon-jae (Yoon San-ha) as they navigate this change. What could have been a thoughtful exploration of identity and love collapses under the weight of shoddy direction, lackluster performances, and deeply problematic portrayals of gender and relationships.
Directorial Missteps: Yoo Kwan-mo’s direction is a significant weak point, failing to harness the story’s potential for meaningful commentary. The narrative swings inconsistently between slapstick comedy and half-hearted philosophical musings, leaving viewers confused about the drama’s intent. A Carl Sagan quote opens the series, hinting at depth, but Yoo’s execution feels superficial, as if he’s uncomfortable fully engaging with the gender fluidity at the story’s core. Critics have noted the director’s insistence that this is “not a BL drama,” which seems to reflect an underlying unease with queer narratives, resulting in a story that shies away from authentic representation and instead leans into outdated tropes. The pacing is erratic, with pivotal emotional moments rushed or undermined by ill-timed humor, making it clear the director lacked a cohesive vision.
A Cast That Falls Flat: The performances, particularly from the idol-heavy cast, are underwhelming at best. Yoon San-ha (ASTRO) as Yoon-jae tries to convey emotional turmoil but often appears wooden, unable to carry the weight of his character’s complex feelings. Arin (OH MY GIRL) and Yoo Jung-hoo, sharing the role of Ji-eun/Ji-hoon, struggle to create a cohesive character, with their performances feeling disconnected—Arin’s bubbly Ji-eun lacks depth, while Yoo’s Ji-hoon feels like a caricature rather than a nuanced extension of the same person. Chuu’s Kang Min-ju, the “queen bee” pursuing Yoon-jae, is reduced to a misogynistic stereotype of a manipulative woman, her actions (including ignoring boundaries) played for laughs rather than critiqued. The cast’s inexperience is evident, and the direction does little to guide them toward authenticity, leaving scenes feeling like a circus of exaggerated expressions and missed emotional beats.
Problematic Themes: Homophobia and Misogyny: The drama’s handling of gender and sexuality is deeply troubling. Reviews have pointed out a persistent undercurrent of homophobia, particularly in how Yoon-jae reacts to Ji-eun’s male form, Ji-hoon. His discomfort—marked by physical distancing and a refusal to engage romantically with Ji-hoon—feels like a rejection of queer intimacy, reinforcing harmful stereotypes about same-sex relationships. One review notes Yoon-jae’s “disgust” at the thought of kissing Ji-hoon, which undercuts any attempt at portraying love that transcends physical form. The use of “gay panic” humor and jealousy-driven subplots further cheapens the narrative, trivializing serious themes.
Misogyny also permeates the show’s portrayal of women. Female characters like Kang Min-ju are depicted as shallow and manipulative, with Min-ju’s relentless pursuit of Yoon-jae despite his clear boundaries painted as comedic rather than predatory. Ji-eun’s own agency is often sidelined, with the story focusing more on how her transformation affects others than on her internal journey. The show’s attempt to add depth to female characters in later episodes feels like an afterthought, failing to undo the damage of earlier caricatures. Additionally, disturbing subplots—like Ji-eun’s sister Jihye’s inappropriate flirtations with Ji-hoon, played for laughs—border on incestuous and are profoundly uncomfortable, further highlighting the writers’ and director’s poor judgment.
Jeon Soo-jin: A Misplaced and Poorly Acted Character: The character of Jeon Soo-jin, the coffee shop owner, is a baffling addition to an already flawed drama. Portrayed as a supposedly wealthy individual who inexplicably falls for a “loser” character, Soo-jin’s storyline feels contrived and disconnected from the main plot. Her arc lacks any grounding in reality—why would a character with her supposed status and resources be drawn to someone so mismatched without deeper development? The performance is equally lackluster, with zero emotional range that makes her scenes feel like filler. Soo-jin’s presence adds nothing to the narrative, serving as a shallow plot device rather than a fully realized character. Her inclusion feels like a desperate attempt to add drama, but it only underscores the show’s inability to craft meaningful relationships or believable motivations.
A Missed Opportunity: My Girlfriend Is the Man! had the chance to explore gender fluidity and love in a groundbreaking way, but it squanders this potential with a director who seems out of his depth and a cast that can’t rise above the weak script. The show’s low ratings—hitting a record-breaking 0.5% for its tenth episode—reflect its failure to resonate with audiences. The homophobic and misogynistic undertones, coupled with shallow portrayals of women and a pointless character like Jeon Soo-jin, make it a frustrating watch. It’s shocking that a premise with such edge was greenlit only to be executed so poorly, leaving viewers questioning the creative choices behind this misfire.
Rating: Zero! – A bold concept ruined by terrible direction, uninspired acting, and offensive tropes.

Is this a game of endurance??!!

Here's the thing, I don't mind a love triangle, I don't care for them but it doesn't stop me from enjoying a story but this drama is getting on my nerves!!! Minutes has got to be the most annoying characters I have ever had to tolerate she's just too much!! Why the heck does she behave this way? and even worse, Why the heck does Yunjae allow this behavior?!!! I seriously don't get it. Such a cute girl, she could have any man she wants and she so shamelessly throws herself at a taken one?!!!! and Yunjae dude, Where's your back bone?!!!

Is this the way it's written in the webtoon?? or is this just a challenge by the writters to see how much the audience will endure? Both, maybe??

The subject is so cool, and interesting but it's being ruined by this unnecessary drama!!! How cool would this story be if it were focused solely on the fact the Jieun changes into a man and how hard it is for Yunjae to accept the fact that he loves this person so much that gender doesn't matter?? It is, I see him slowly getting there and that's what I thought this story was going to be, but instead it's being overshadowed by the most nerve wracking, shameless, Homewreker wannabe in the world.

I'm not dropping, yet. I really like the cast, including Chuu, I had never seen her before and we all have to admit, she's doing her job really well, it's not her fault her character is so unlikeable. The genderswap story is what I came for and annoying as it's become with this girl thrown into the mix, I still want to see where it goes.

A little update ahead of the final two episodes, Minjoo will never not ve annoying but the series is so fun even with her in it I loved episodes 9 and 10 so much that I adjusted my rating and I'm really excited to watch the ending next week.

Well I finished it 🤷‍♀️ ....

The final episode was so underwhelming, I feel cheated, but really what was I expecting? Minjoo made the series unwatchable I stayed out of spite really. I did have fun, everyone did a great Job and I am happy I finished it. I'm being quite generous with a 6.0/10 rating as much as it annoyed me and how dumb ending was, it was an Ok Watch but,I would not put myself through this torture ever again nor would I recommend it to anyone.

A TRUE GARBAGE OF A DRAMA

Dropped this drama because the male lead is one of the weakest characters I’ve ever seen. Every bit of development just collapses because he never stands his ground. And then comes the most pathetic part — his girlfriend literally turns into a boy, and suddenly his “love” disappears because he’s straight? So his love isn’t about emotions, connection, or heart-fluttering feelings… it’s just about whether she has a vagina for him. That’s such a shallow and insulting take on romance. If love can vanish that easily, then it was never real in the first place. This ruined any remaining interest I had in the story.

Perfect for people like me

This was wonderful! It reminded me a bit of kdramas circa 2012. I'm a prude who doesn't like all the spicy content that current dramas are including these days. This drama was super cute, light-hearted, and uncomplicated. Like the others said, it's not for fans of BL. I recommend for a fluffy, chuckle here and there type watch.

What I thought of the series: This series was a little different and that's so positive because it's fun to see a different concept for a series. I'm not disappointed at all. :D

My Girlfriend Is the Man! — A Webtoon Adaptation That Lost Its Own Idea

When I heard that My Girlfriend Is the Man! was being adapted from the webtoon My Girlfriend Is a Real Man by Massstar, I was honestly excited. The original concept is fun, bold, and actually quite meaningful. It plays with the idea that love shouldn’t depend on gender. The webtoon explores what happens when someone you love suddenly changes gender and how that challenges identity, attraction, and the definition of love itself. Unfortunately, the drama adaptation completely loses that idea.

The biggest issue is that the series doesn’t really feel like a BL at all. Instead of focusing on the complicated and fascinating dynamic between two boys navigating love when one of them suddenly changes gender, the drama shifts the attention toward a much safer storyline. It becomes a regular gender-transition comedy that feels very similar to dramas we’ve already seen before, like Mr. Queen. In doing so, the series avoids the very theme that made the webtoon interesting in the first place.

A big part of that shift comes from the way the characters are used. A Rin clearly receives a huge amount of screen time, and it’s obvious why. She is a very popular idol, and the production clearly wanted to take advantage of that popularity. But by giving her so much focus, the story moves further away from the BL premise. Instead of exploring the relationship between the two male characters, the drama constantly brings the narrative back to a more conventional male-female dynamic. In the end, what we get feels more like a regular romance with a fantasy gimmick rather than the daring BL story it was marketed as. Because of that decision, many moments that could have been interesting simply never happen. The webtoon suggests a story where love challenges gender expectations, where a character could still love someone regardless of whether they are male or female. That idea opens the door to many creative possibilities. The characters could have explored how their relationship changes depending on the gender shift. They could have played with different dynamics, even humorously switching roles depending on the situation. Instead, the drama avoids all of that. The romance stays extremely safe, and the emotional potential of the concept is completely wasted.

Ironically, the most impressive performance in the series comes from Yoo Jung Hoo. Because he isn’t an idol and was relatively new at the time, he ends up receiving much less focus in the story. That’s a real shame because he is easily the most interesting actor in the main trio. His performance shows real range. He manages to portray the vulnerability and emotional confusion of someone whose identity is constantly shifting. Watching him embody a female personality inside a male body is actually one of the few aspects of the drama that feels convincing and emotionally layered.

On the other hand, Yoon San Ha’s role ends up being surprisingly flat. The character barely evolves, and the performance doesn’t add much depth either. His role feels so one-note that almost any actor could have played it the same way. This is another example of a drama relying more on looks and popularity than on acting ability or character development.

The production itself is also quite average. The music is forgettable, and the tone of the series often feels inconsistent. At times the drama tries to be comedic, then suddenly emotional, but it rarely finds the right balance between those elements.

Final Thought

My Girlfriend Is the Man! is one of those adaptations that completely misses the point of its original story. The webtoon explored the idea that love goes beyond gender, but the drama avoids that concept and turns the story into something much safer and more conventional. Despite a few good performances — especially from Yoo Jung Hoo — the series ultimately feels like a missed opportunity. When you promise a BL story but never fully deliver it, disappointment is almost inevitable.

Actually I started watching this drama because of sanha. And l enjoyed it. But sometimes I feel uneasy, when they showing intimate closeness and feelings Between two man. I know, FL had a body swipe. But, my personal opinion. And I really like their friendship though.
Airin and sanha chemistry makes me continue this drama. And obviously, sanha's look in this drama was too much innocent and cute.

ça m’a fatiguée 😤

Bref, "My Girlfriend Is a Man" se regarde malgré tout facilement, j'ai parfois rigolé, mais ça reste creux...

resenha

Olha, esse dorama me surpreendeu bastante.
