Nostalgia, Heartbreak, and Real Growth

If you're looking for a warm, grounded, and low-key emotional C-drama to sink into, In My Prime is definitely worth having on your radar. It’s a slice-of-life period drama set in the 90s, and it follows two neighboring families as their kids grow up and navigate real-life chaos.

Plot
The story follows two neighboring families, the Qis and the Caos, as their kids grow up together in a northern factory town starting back in the 90s. At the center of it all is Qi Shi, a headstrong girl learning to navigate the world while living with albinism, and her neighbor Cao Xin, the classic "perfect kid" secretly suffocating under his dad’s massive expectations. The story does not have major plot twist or super villain, it focuses on the messy, everyday reality of childhood rivalries, family pressure, and trying to figure out who you are.

What To Expect
Solid Characterization : It feels real because sometimes you would want to punch them, sometimes you fall in love with them. They are toxic, gullible, passionate, proud yet vulnerable and full of life. None of them are perfect. The show leaves room for growth and actual accountability.

Top-Tier Acting : The acting in this show is ridiculously good. Guan Xiao Tong and Wang Zi Qi bring so much real emotion to their roles, and you can tell they completely understood their characters. Even the actors playing the parents do a fantastic job, making you absolutely despise them one minute and low-key sympathizing with them the next.

Unique Concept and Raw Emotional : I have never watched a drama where albinism is mentioned in such way. The show dives into real issues like family guilt, money stress, and feeling like an outsider without sugarcoating any of it. The emotional moments feel super earned—not cheap or forced just to make you cry—because you're so invested in these kids and their messy families.

** Do not expect Heavy Romance, story is slow burn slice of life.
** The show takes its time building up the world and character relationships.

Ultimately, it's a slow-burn comfort drama that hits you right in the feel with its raw, relatable family dynamics.

Frustrating Yet Relatable: A Deep Dive into Toxic Asian Parenting and Child Resilience

This drama tells the story of two families, the Cao and Qi families, whose fates are inextricably intertwined—a bond that stems from a major tragedy in their lives.

While the main themes of family and growing up are quite common, what sets this drama apart is the character of Qi Shi, played by Guan Xiaotong, who is an albino. I have never encountered an albino character in any drama or movie before. Through this show, I gained a deep understanding of the struggles they face.

The drama maintains a steady pace. Conflicts are resolved directly and to the point without dragging on, and every issue is well-explored. If you're looking for romance, this might not be the right choice for you. As listed on kisskh, its genres are Drama and Family, so the emphasis is strictly on family dynamics.

Honestly, I really appreciate how this drama challenges us to stop romanticizing poverty and hardship. It portrays them as real obstacles that genuinely hold people back, rather than romanticized experiences that magically make you stronger, as many clichés suggest.

That said, Qi Shi's character is a true fighter, and there’s a lot we can learn from her. On the other hand, Cao Xin—who suffers the most from his parents' reckless decisions—turns out to be the most understanding and mature character of all.

I was thoroughly frustrated by Qi Shi’s parents, who embody typical toxic Asian parenting: a dominant mother and a passive father. The father constantly allows his wife to express her love in toxic ways. Yelling at your child when you should be praising them is never the right approach. Their parents, especially the mother, are incredibly self-centered and lack self-awareness. She firmly believes she made the best decisions at the time and expects everyone to understand and appreciate her efforts.

I genuinely disliked the mother. Even though the story keeps reminding us that she has a soft heart deep down, what good is that if she can’t express it and ends up hurting everyone with her harsh words and sky-high ego?

At first, I also disliked Cao Xin’s passive father. However, by the end, I grew to respect him. Out of all the adults, he was the only one who genuinely felt guilty and was willing to apologize to his child. He swallowed his pride completely just to ask for his child's forgiveness.

This drama is frustrating yet compelling to watch. It irritated me because it reflects how many real-life parents still don't know how to communicate with their children—often guilt-tripping them just to avoid admitting their own mistakes.

Ultimately, this show made me realize even more that children are truly the most forgiving beings.

However, I have to say that the chemistry between Guan Xiaotong and Wang Ziqi is absolutely top-tier. It's such a shame that their romantic screentime was so limited. Every single interaction between them felt heartwarming and gave me butterflies, even though their relationship was never officially made explicit. Given that the drama doesn't focus on romance, I tried to be understanding. But honestly, if their romance had been explored just a bit further, I definitely would have given this drama a higher rating. It feels like a missed opportunity to not fully leverage such overpowered chemistry.

A warm, messy & painfully human slice-of-life

Such an underrated gem. I loved how #InMyPrime showed that sometimes there isn’t one big villain, it’s just life, family, old mindsets, pride & misunderstandings.
Shi’s growth was one of my fav parts, especially watching her become more confident in herself and find her own path. I also loved her relationship with Xin, their friendship, banter & the way caring for her became 2nd nature to him.
The family dynamics were messy but felt very real. Qing Lian frustrated me A LOT, but I appreciated that her growth wasn’t sudden or unrealistic. My biggest issue was how passive the fathers were. So many situations wouldn’t have snowballed if they had just stood their ground, communicated properly & spoken up when it mattered.
I also loved the friendship grp and watching everyone grow from school into adulthood. It made me laugh, frustrated me, broke my heart and still left me feeling warm by the end.
Not perfect, but definitely one of my fav slice-of-life dramas this year. 8/10. 🥺🤍

warm family comedy drama

this drama is about two families with totally different vibes living in qingwu town. the cao and qi families both welcome a new baby—and end up swapping them. the conflict builds from misunderstandings between the caos and qis, and honestly, their bond just falls apart.

this drama really shows how toxic asian parenting can be. qi shi has a dominant mother and a passive father, and she deals with albinism while struggling to succeed. i don't want to blame anyone, but qi shi's struggles start with her mom's bad temper and qi zhi causing trouble. qi's mom is totally self-centered and has zero self-awareness. like, why is she always yelling and blaming her kids for reasons only she thinks make sense?

on the other hand, cao xin's life looks great, bright, and smooth as butter. but nobody knows his struggle against his dad's pressure to study abroad and unilaterally decide his future. when cao xin confronts his dad and says he doesn't want to go, i was honestly so relieved. finally, he has the courage to speak up for what he wants.

the complexity of their characters shows that it's just life.

the script is so good, and the details are totally nailed. it's not just about the main leads; every single character has their own story. the plot flows smoothly, the timeline is pretty clear, and the character development is great. the pacing is good too—slow, but not dragging.

though the writer must have been high when they came up with the baby swap plot, because logically, the older kids in the cao and qi families should have been old enough to realize their siblings got switched🥴 and seriously, i am so not okay with qi shi and qi zhi getting back together. like, after everything they did, their ending is still staying together?? what about the younger siblings, don't you feel bad for them???

sadly, the romance between xin and shi is super, super thin, and the second couple actually stands out more. there's zero explanation for how their feelings even grew—just an ambiguous smile, and boom, they're together in the very last episode. if only there had been more bonding between cao xin and qi shi instead of their older brother and sister, i would totally rewatch this.

overall, it's such a warm family comedy drama. everyone nailed the chemistry and the vibes, and the ost really fits the atmosphere.

Beautiful and emotional piece of work

I genuinely loved how the story unfolded—it has became my favorite drama .hats off to female lead qi shi as both younger and adult ,both made me love and cry at the same time. I am amazed to how female lead acted with a character of albinism and male lead cao xin was brilliant i loved his character. it wasn’t just about romance, but also about family, growth, sacrifices, and the emotions that come with life. The characters felt real, and their journey kept me emotionally invested throughout.
Some moments were truly heartwarming, while others broke my heart. I cried like a fool .i am so happy that i decided to watch it .The chemistry between the leads and the way their relationship developed made the story even more special.
A drama that made me smile, cry, and feel deeply connected to the characters. Definitely one of those stories that stays with you even after you finish watching it. ❤️✨.i will definitely watch it again and again.
Highly recommended if you love emotional stories with meaningful relationships and beautiful character development.

Heart warming family comedy

What a refreshing heartwarming family comedy. With a multi-generational home environment, this is a pleasure to watch. I enjoyed the dynamics of both families. You need a box of tissues close by to watch this. It brings out good emotions, dealing with life issues not often discussed. I would recommend watching this series.

PS.: eu amei a música do drama, nossa. Uma vibe muito BOA!!!!
