Best GL out there

Everything is perfect in this drama. The director Eda is a genius. Mio and Ichika did a great job. Their acting is so good. The aesthetics are top-notch. I have never seen such great visuals although I have watched countless dramas so far. Impressed with everything. I wish they would continue the series and there will be a second season two because the chemistry of MioChika is out of this world. As individuals, they are amazing people in real life too.

Mio and Ichika chan you guys are amazing and have all my life. Fan for life.

An Intricate Web of Self Discovery!

The hardest person to face is often the one staring back at us in the mirror.

In the new Japanese GL drama Call Me by No-Name, adapted from Shasendo Yuki’s acclaimed novel, viewers are invited into a poignant and emotionally intricate journey of identity, trust, and self-discovery. The story centers on Megumi Yotsugi (Kudo Mio), a bright yet unassuming student at Eichi University, whose life is forever altered when she encounters Kotoha Furuhashi (Osaki Ichika), a mysterious and enigmatic girl abandoned at a garbage dump. What begins as Megumi’s earnest desire for friendship takes an unexpected turn when Kotoha proposes a peculiar wager: Megumi must act as her girlfriend and uncover her true name to achieve the bond she seeks.

OMG, why are most JBLs/JGLs/JQLs sooo fn dark?

Most shows in the queer spectrum from Japan have a dark undertone and this one is much darker then most.
How to articulate all the feelings I have in a not rambling way?

After watching this I'm still a bit overwhelmed. What starts as a coincidal meeting of two young women, where one of them takes the other home, gets weird after just 8 minutes into the show. I won't spoil anything to you here, because the show will only work, if you don't get spoiled imho.

Kotoha has a dark secret and bet's that Megumi can't guess her real name. Because her name is curse or fate or both. This is a novel concept and makes life for Megumi difficult. She has to explore here true feelings and she needs to confront Kotoha.

The only little downer I had in the finale episode, it was a bit dull in the end and I expected more. But overall the arc was interesting, the acting was very good and the cinematography more artsy as in many other shows and it captures the angst, the love and all feelings inbetween perfectly.

I did not expect much from the show and I stumbled over it by chance, but alone the title intrigued me.
So, if you have no fear to go to dark places this show is for you. But don't expect fluffy scenerios but there is some light in the dark places. And this show is truly outstanding.

Appealing character

What a day with this series! I really didn't expect to enjoy it so much. I particularly liked the characters of Megumi and Hiroko, and the evolution of their relationship, despite the emotional obstacles they faced on both sides. The series is really beautiful and aesthetic, and the cinematography is very captivating. I also really appreciated the emotional support one of the characters offered, an aspect not often seen in GL series.

The actresses had excellent chemistry, and I'd love to see them together again in another project. I would caution, however, that there are scenes of abuse, so watch out for triggers.

You Are Who You Choose to Be

It’s hard not to fall into philosophical tones when discussing the plot or themes of this series, but that doesn’t mean that it’s inaccessible or unnatural. Far from it. Megumi loves, breathes, and moves through the world with a courage she fights to muster, but she always tries to be authentic to herself despite the shame or embarrassment such honesty may bring; Kotoha, conversely, wears her false confidence like armor. They’re both flawed and stumbling young women that feel so real, you can’t help but identify with and root for them. Even if you aren’t a survivor of abuse, you can see the ways that a maladaptive coping mechanism helps until it doesn’t. Even if you aren’t a Meguchi or a Scheherazade yourself, you’ve known or could know someone just like them.

Beyond the characters and acting work, the show itself is violently beautiful in the way that each shot intentionally captures the interplay of shadows and colors. Like this show is absolutely gorgeous to the point where I can’t even talk about the intentionality behind the use of pink and blue without losing my mind. It’s so meticulous! The sound design is great, the soundtrack is great, the color grading is great, the use of lens depth and blank spaces is brilliant, and the episodes are as good the 7th time as they are the 1st.

Watch this show!

A Cinematographic Masterpiece

I binged this in 2 days so I could truly savor this masterpiece. There's no other way to describe it than 'dream-like'. How well-thought symbolism is woven into each scene. How it beautifully shows how traumas haunt its victims and how healing comes through different forms and people. How all the actors flawlessly portrayed seas of complicated emotions. How every frame felt like you were looking at a piece of art at a gallery. How the cinematography and editing perfectly match each wave of emotion with the characters.

I could go on and on about how much of an outstanding surprise this was for me. I really recommend going in without any expectations.
