A solid mystery drama carried by consistent writing and earned emotional payoff
I didn’t expect this drama to pull me in the way it did, but by the time I reached the end, I realized how quietly strong its grip had been all along. What stood out most wasn’t the spectacle or the mysteries themselves, but the consistency of its world and the patience of its storytelling. The cases varied in impact, some arcs landed harder than others. And the writing occasionally leaned too much on exposition rather than visual deduction, but the overall structure remained tight and purposeful.More than anything, this series succeeds for me because of Lu Lingfeng’s character journey. Watching him grow from an impulsive, proud imperial guard general into someone who learns to see the people behind the system, the suffering of the people, and eventually stand as an equal beside Su Wuming was deeply satisfying. That growth feels earned and gradual, never rushed or forced. Su Wuming remains steady and principled throughout, while Pei Xijun’s evolution from a doted, desperate daughter into a perceptive and emotionally grounded woman was another highlight.
The drama’s approach to the supernatural — where “ghosts” are almost always human cruelty, fear, or obsession — stays coherent across arcs and reinforces its themes about power, injustice, and manipulation within the court. Romance is understated and restrained, sometimes frustratingly so, but it suits the tone of the story, prioritizing trust and companionship over grand gestures.
By the finale, the story doesn’t just resolve its last case; it brings emotional closure to long-running wounds, particularly those tied to legacy, mentorship, and unfinished justice. It isn’t a flawless drama, but it is a thoughtful and well-constructed one.
Final score 8.5/10 - Not flawless, but consistently engaging and emotionally rewarding.

Slow Burn, Sharp Minds, and Totally Hooked: My Tang Dynasty Obsession
OMG, I did not expect to get sucked into this drama, but here we are. 😂 Like seriously, I went in thinking “meh, another mystery thing” and ended up binge-watching half the episodes in one night. This show low-key hit different.First off… Su Wu Ming. Bruh. 😏 This guy was flashy, yeah, but it was his brain that was insane. He was always ten steps ahead, manipulating situations, and making everyone else look like amateurs. I swear, sometimes I just sat there like, “Wtf, how did he even think of that?!” Honestly, he was my favorite reason to watch this show. High-key a genius.
Then there was Lu Ling Feng… oh boy. At first, I was like smh—he was so cocky and rushed into everything like a maniac. I was rolling my eyes so hard. But ngl, by Episode 11, he started to grow on me. He learned from Su Wu Ming, thinking before swinging his sword, and slowly became a real character instead of just being the “proud general.” The bromance though… lol, I was weak. It wasn’t even cheesy, just real—like “I don’t totally hate you yet, and maybe you’re useful.” 😂
The show didn’t shove romance in my face either, thank god. There were minor hints, but they didn’t ruin anything. That’s rare for dramas, ngl. It kept the focus on the mysteries and character growth, which was honestly the main reason I kept watching.
The supporting cast was quirky and fun too. There was the chicken-obsessed doctor, the martial artist-turned-disciple, and a pretty talented artist. They all had their own weird vibes, and watching them work together actually made me care about everyone in the team. It was chaotic but in the best way.
The cases themselves? Chef’s kiss. They were clever, twisted, and some had me like “wtf?!” but the solutions actually made sense. The supernatural stuff was fun but subtle—it was never like “ghosts everywhere lol,” it was all about human motives and clever detective work.
Pacing? Yeah, it was slow at first. But if you’re into slow-burn dramas, this is so your jam. Characters grew, the plot built, and the payoff was worth it. I couldn’t even with how satisfying some of those reveals were.
Overall, if you like mysteries, clever characters, and slow-burn shows where the leads actually develop, this one’s a must-watch. Can’t wait for Season 2. I’m already overthinking what Su Wu Ming and Lu Ling Feng are gonna do next.

Satisfying Your DeDi needs
It's pretty nice.One thing I enjoyed is the structure - the characters usually travel to a new location and solve one or two cases there.
This keeps everything fresh and fun.
The characters take a while to grow on you, but when they do they are also enjoyable to watch.
Not quite as bonkers and colourful as Tsui Hark's Detective Dee movies, but overall in a similar vein.
I wasn't a fan of the Tang simping, but thankfully the nationalist meltdowns are not that frequent.

A Ghostless Tang Dynasty
I do love Ancient detective dramas but in this category The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty would be the gold standard for me. Not that the 2 dramas are completely similar as this is focused on solving super natural murder mysteries.Positives:
Su Wu Ming -- Humorous with a slight sarcasm. By far the most interesting character.
Ghost mysteries -- Interesting decipher of fake ghosts murders with several different mysteries. Good pacing.
Political struggles between the Queen vs the Prince and some how the mysteries intertwined with them.
Decent fight scenes - Not amazing but entertaining.
Could've been better:
Character development -- practically none. I had to give the series a break when when it felt like nothing but solving mysteries. Bromance never really blossomed and Lu Ling Feng's temper remain the same.

A Folklore-Inspired Mystery with Mixed Execution
I have mixed feelings about this drama. It is structured around a series of investigation cases, each intended to carry a spooky, folklore-inspired atmosphere tied to different regions. However, I didn’t feel this concept was consistently executed throughout the series. A noticeable portion of the later episodes leans more toward conventional investigative storytelling rather than maintaining the eerie or supernatural tone introduced early on.The beginning stood out to me the most, as it leaned heavily into its atmospheric and unsettling elements. The sound design, setting, and overall mood were especially strong and created a compelling sense of mystery. These early episodes were where the drama felt most distinctive and engaging for me.
As the series progressed, the tone shifted and the remaining cases felt more grounded and procedural, which didn’t hold my interest in the same way. I also struggled to connect with the romance subplot. That said, the performances were solid throughout, and the martial arts and action choreography were definite highlights.
Overall, I appreciated what the drama was trying to do, but I personally wished it had leaned more consistently into its darker, folklore-inspired direction.

The strangest tale was that the love interest was dropped out down the line
I am at episode 13 and seriously considering to stop watching it. The first thing which draw my attention for being quite off was the fact that the love interest presented in the first five or six episodes was completely forgotten by writers, actors and directors in the next five episodes. Two young people, who were presumably in love with each other while events and people kept them appart, are as stiff as wood when events bring them together, sharing meals, rooms, adventures. No emotion, no furtive glanses, no pauses full of yearning. Nothing. It did not have to be lines, or hugs or kisses. But it had to be something there, that the actors and director could have put into it, if the writers completely forgot what they wrote in the beginning. Well, it was not. The only thing going for the series was the detective stories. And the fun the actor playing the older detective put into his character. Otherwise, no character development, overall, and the series walks the thin line which lies between skematic and bare naked and lacking.Was this review helpful to you?
Not My Cup of Tea
Despite the many positive reviews and the fact that it extended up to 3 seasons, this show was just not my cup of tea.I am a sucker for mystery, detective shows. Although I wasn’t really convinced when I read the synopsis, the story that blends mystery, detective, and supernatural beings was worth giving a try. However, I ended up finding myself getting bored mainly because it was too slow and there was too much back and forth dialogue for my taste. The mystery cases presented in this drama also did not get me hooked.
The actors did not help either. In terms of acting, I’m pretty sure they are great actors. Sadly, I just don’t find their characters interesting. However, I have to say the production quality, especially the makeup and outfits, were great though!
All in all, I wouldn’t say this drama is bad. It’s just not my cup of tea. There’s too little thrill, adrenaline, build up, romance (even a subtle one), and too strange of a mystery for my taste.

10/10 Season 2 even better!
This show is great! A period piece in Tang China with more adventures of Su Wuming and Grenral Lu Linfang. Kung-fu, wizards, demons and they solve mysteries. This show has it all. Very well acted and written spectacularly as well as shot in some absolutely beautiful places, this show is absolutely awesome. Rates right with Academy of Souls. The characters are very likeable and the mysteries are intriguing and not run of the mill nonsense. would highly recommend this show to fans of Mysteries and Kung-fu action series and those period pieces that come from China, Japan and Korea.This is my favorite show of 2024. Blows HBO's Dragons away.
