Love Sea: The Home for Lovers — The Characters I Imagined While Reading the Novel

After watching the Thai version, I was curious to see how Japan would approach Love Sea. Surprisingly, this remake ended up feeling closer to the novel I had in my head. The production is obviously smaller, but what it lacks in budget, it makes up for by understanding the characters.

The biggest improvement is undoubtedly Kaishin. Kunigami Masato is exactly how I imagined Mahasamut while reading MAME's novel. He's naturally sexy without trying too hard, carries himself with quiet confidence, and has that irresistible charm that makes it believable people constantly fall for him. Unlike the Thai version, where I always felt Mahasamut had been softened too much, this version finally gives the character the charisma and sexual appeal I expected from the beginning.

Nishime Shun is equally convincing as Rakumoto Ai. He perfectly captures the character's vulnerability, awkwardness, and gradual emotional growth without exaggerating any of it. He's incredibly likeable from the very first episode, making it easy to understand why Kaishin slowly falls in love with him. Together, the two leads create a relationship that feels remarkably faithful to the novel.

Another pleasant surprise is the female cast.

Habu Mizuho is absolutely mesmerising as Himeka. She naturally commands every scene she appears in, and it's easy to see why she's already so popular as an idol. Kawazu Asuka also brings a great deal of experience to her role, and her performance adds another layer of credibility to the story. In fact, the women are so memorable here that I barely found myself thinking about their counterparts in the Thai adaptation. This version gives every major character enough presence to feel equally important, regardless of gender.

What surprised me most is that I never felt the quality dropped after the first couple. Usually, when a drama tells two separate love stories, I naturally end up preferring one over the other. Here, that never happened. Both romances kept me invested for different reasons, and I enjoyed following each of them until the very end. That balance is something the Thai adaptation didn't quite achieve for me.

Despite the more modest production, the series never feels cheap. Japan wisely focuses on atmosphere, performances, and character interactions instead of trying to compete with the Thai version's larger scale. That decision pays off because the emotions remain at the centre of every episode.

Final Thought

Love Sea: The Home for Lovers proves that a faithful understanding of the characters matters more than a large budget. Kunigami Masato and Nishime Shun feel exactly like the protagonists I imagined while reading the novel, and the female cast is equally outstanding. While the second couple doesn't quite reach the same level, this remake captures the spirit of MAME's story better than I expected and, in several aspects, even better than the original adaptation.

Better adapation

I must say....Yes this was better than the Thai version. Better acting, better characterization, and better pacing. I really enjoyed this one. I was worried cause Japan doesn't usually do NC that well. Well this one was fantastic, but more importantly I love the recharacterization of Kaishan. I got why he fell in love with Ai. In the Thai version I never understood why Mahasamut fell in love with Rak. There was literally no reason to. The acting was just better and natural. I never really felt any dragging of the plot like I did in the Thai version. The one part that I did feel the Thai was better was the confrontation with the father. It was definitely done better in the Thai version and felt more like an unleashed dog in that one. Very spicy. I also still love the part where Mahasamut was called a dog and he barked. Also the side GL couple in the Thai version really angered me. I thought at the beginning that the Japanese version was going to go that same route but they tone down the obnoxiousness a LOT, and I actually enjoyed them. But other than that, yep. I'm surprised cause the last Thai to Japan remake was not good. This one exceeded my expectation. While the Thai verson was a 7/8 to me, this one is firmly in the 9 territory.

Too rushed they seem to be going on 2x

Idk if it's cz I've watched the Thai version but i feel like they kinda rushed like in the dialogue delivery or acting i felt like they were rushing to cover everything. Like they had too many things to show so they were asked to talk, walk n act in a 2x mode.

Usually when i watch Japanese version of something I'd expect a totally new interpretation of the character. Their acting, the way the story is interpreted and showed is different. I think love sea and love in the air Japanese versions dissapointed me in that area.

They've copied the thai version right down to the acting especially ai's character. He looks and acts too much like peat that i see peat when i look at him. Which is just not my preference they shouldn't have let him watch the original version before making him play the character that way you'd get his interpretation of the character. He has definitely watched the series and ended up copying the same... i know its just ep1 but I'm not sure if i should continue cz the pacing is just too fast and off. In the thai version you could see the characters fall in love and feel it but here they're just running to complete the scenes. Also love sea is a tan guy x pale guy story. They could have found someone with the right skin tone but the obvious tan and whiting looks really fake. They've done a horrible work at makeup. You can easily tell the person playing ai is a slightly tan guy whitened and the tan is not consistent either somtimes too dark or too light.

I think u can skip this if you've watched the thai version but give it a go if you've not watched it... the story is actually good. The director messed up. I'm dropping it for now lets see in future if i pick it up

Uma versão resumida e ainda mais charmosa de Love Sea

Comecei a assistir achando que seria só mais um remake morninho, daqueles que resumem tudo e ainda perdem o encanto no caminho. Mas o Japão me surpreendeu. Eles conseguiram pegar a essência da história tailandesa e transformar em algo bonito à sua maneira, mais contido, mais delicado. É basicamente um resumo da versão original, sim, e dá pra sentir que faltou tempo pra algumas coisas, mas o que coube ali dentro foi bem feito.

E olha… eu preciso falar disso logo: Love Sea tailandês ficou marcado por muitos motivos, mas nenhum tão icônico quanto a bundinha do Fort. Então, claro, eu fiquei curiosa pra saber o que fariam com isso na versão japonesa. E o melhor de tudo é que eles não fugiram da responsabilidade histórica. Teve coragem, teve beijo decente, e entregaram tudo nas cenas NC seguintes, e, vindo de onde veio, isso já é uma evolução.

Os atores foram um acerto enorme. A química do casal principal é natural, intensa e, acima de tudo, convincente. Não tem aquele toque robótico, nem beijo de lábio congelado. Aqui, eles se olham e a coisa acontece. O carinho é real, o desejo é palpável, e a emoção vem de um jeito que não parece forçado. Fiquei realmente surpresa com o quanto eles conseguiram equilibrar ternura e paixão sem cair no melodrama.

Mesmo com o foco claro no casal principal, o enredo não esquece das meninas, e eu realmente gostei disso. A relação entre elas é curta, e é um tipo de amor mais silencioso que contrasta bem com a intensidade dos protagonistas. Só que, diferente do casal principal, elas parecem um pouco mais engessadas, como se não tivessem se conectado totalmente aos próprios personagens. E com o tempo limitado da série, acabam ficando meio espremidas entre as cenas do casal principal, assim como aconteceu na versão original. Ainda assim, foi bonito ver o esforço do roteiro em manter essa parte da história viva, sem apagar o que as duas representam dentro do universo de Love Sea.

O único pecado da série é o tempo. Esses episódios curtinhos acabam antes que a gente consiga se apegar totalmente. Fica uma sensação agridoce (no bom sentido): você gosta do que viu, mas sente que poderia ter sido ainda mais. Mesmo assim, o roteiro foi cuidadoso o suficiente pra preservar o que realmente importa, o amor, o amadurecimento e aquele toque de melancolia que faz Love Sea ser o que é.

No fim, eu terminei com o coração quentinho. Foi leve, doce e, de certa forma, mais sensível do que eu esperava. Então sim, eu recomendo. Love Sea Japão pode ser curto, mas é gostoso de assistir. E se você já conhece o original, vale a pena ver como essa versão encontra sua própria forma de dizer a mesma coisa.

Eu acredito que quando avaliei Love Sea original eu estava muito de bom humor (porque pensando hoje eu daria um 7 e este um 7,5/8), porque sim, me lembro que a atuação da atriz mirim foi ótima, cenários maravilhosos, mas me incomodou muito a atuação do Peat, já aqui, nesta adaptação japonesa, eu realmente gostei mais da atuação do Nishime Shun para este personagem, não me pareceu falso ou forçado em momento algum.
Eu gosto muito de quando as produções japonesas adaptam os dramas tailandeses, eu acho que eles conseguem pegar o que há de melhor na história e dar o seu toque único e deixar superior a obra original, mas não desmereço nenhuma das versões.
Eu gostei que nesta versão as locações eram mais reais, apesar de saber o status do personagem Ai, nem toda atuação me convenceu nos pontos cruciais, mas a escolha dos dois atores foi muito certeira. Entregaram beijos ótimos, química maravilhosa e uma atuação mais em sintonia, ainda mais por ser a primeira atuação do Kunigami Masato, acho que foi ótimo.
Sobre o casal GL, a personagem da atriz Aya lá na outra versão me conectou bem mais, acho que a cena do carro e o choro silencioso e extremamente doloroso mexeu muito comigo, então não me conectei com elas aqui. Não gostei do beijo, do toque da Ui Himeka, parecia tudo tão travado, independente de querer passar o oposto do relacionamento do Ai e Kaishin, que era muito intenso e sexual.
Gostei muito dos cenários e adorei como todo final de episódio o encerramento ia mudando as cenas e mostrando também belas paisagens.

APÓS TERMINAR EU PERCEBI QUE MEU PROBLEMA SEMPRE FOI O RAKUMOTO AI/ RAK

Assisti essa versão meses depois de ter terminado Love Sea na versão tailandesa. Eu tive problemas em avançar e terminar Love Sea tailandês justamente pela personalidade do Rak (nome do mesmo personagem do Rakumoto Ai) e sua história familiar, eu não gostava disso nem um pouco a após assistir essa versão (que eu achei mais condensada e agradável em vários aspectos) eu percebi que isso não mudou. Eu não suporto o personagem.

Esses 10 episódios foram muito bonitos e bem gravados, a sintonia entre os protagonistas é absurda, eu nunca vi tanta química, cenas intimas tão intensas e beijos tão bonitos em nenhum outro projeto japonês. Eu fiquei positivamente surpresa.

Inclusive o romance secundário das meninas eu achei muito superior aqui (apesar de eu não ligar muito para elas nas duas versões kkkk).

Meu problema com a história é 100% com a personalidade insuportável do Rakumoto Ai. Tudo nele me dá asco e olha que eu não me importo com personagens narcisistas, grossos e mimados, mas alguma coisa na caracterização que a MAME deu para o personagem me desagrada profundamente, e a passividade do Muto Kaishin perante a ele é a cereja do bolo para o meu descontentamento.

Algo nessa combinação não é pra mim.

Tudo ao redor no nosso protagonista detestável (porque pra mim ele é, Jesus) é sobre ele ser um pobre coitado, ele esta sempre mal, em perigo e precisa que tudo gire ao redor dele e de seu drama familiar. Eu realmente não gosto e olha que eu não tenho problema com isso em muitas outras historias, o meu problema é definitivamente com esse projeto. Essa história não me pega, mas sei reconhecer algo bem feito e por isso não dei uma nota baixa.

Gostei desse BL e achei uma boa experiência no geral. A história tem potencial e conseguiu me entreter, principalmente com a química entre os protagonistas, que foi convincente e trouxe momentos emocionantes e leves. As atuações foram boas, a produção teve qualidade aceitável e a trilha sonora combinou bem.

Porém, faltou consistência. Alguns episódios tiveram ritmo arrastado, enquanto outros pareceram corridos demais. Além disso, certos personagens ou tramas paralelas poderiam ter sido melhor explorados. Não chega a ser decepcionante, mas também não alcança todo o impacto que poderia ter.

They stayed true to the original plot and that is the key element of making a successful adaptation. This series was well directed and the main couple and side couple had a good chemistry. The acting was decent from most actors and actresses. And just like the original Love Sea, this one has several spicy NC scenes. So if you don't like to see same sex intimate scenes, don't watch this series.
