South Korean musician PSY (48, real name Park Jae Sang) has come under police investigation for proxy pickup of psychotropic drugs.

On August 28, the Seodaemun Police Station booked PSY and Professor A, from a university hospital, who prescribed the medication, for violating the Medical Service Act, and is currently investigating them.

PSY is accused of having taken the psychotropic drugs "Xanax" and "Stilnox" at a university hospital in Seoul from 2022 until recently, without undergoing in-person medical examinations, and of having his manager or other third parties pick up the medication on his behalf.

It is reported that the police detected these suspicions through a tip-off and recently conducted a search and seizure at the university hospital to secure the medical records.

Under the Medical Service Act, only the doctor who directly examines the patient may issue a prescription, and prescriptions may only be received by the person who has undergone the examination.

The drugs PSY is said to have been prescribed — Xanax and Stilnox — are psychotropic medications used to treat sleep disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression. Because they carry a high risk of dependence and addiction, in-person examinations and prescriptions are considered a must.

However, Professor A is reported to have denied the allegations, claiming that the treatment was conducted remotely.

PSY’s agency, P Nation, issued a statement today, saying, “Having prescription sleeping pills collected by a third party was clearly a fault and an oversight,” and added, “We apologize.”

P Nation explained, “PSY has been diagnosed with chronic sleep disorder and has been taking sleeping medication as prescribed by a medical professional,” adding, “He has been taking the medication under medical supervision at prescribed dosages, and there was no proxy prescription.”

“However, there were cases where a third party collected the sleeping pills on his behalf, and the police are currently investigating,” and added, “We apologize once again for causing concern.”

The police, after analyzing the medical records obtained through the search and seizure, plan to summon PSY for questioning.
