Hwang Jung Eum may face a three-year prison sentence because of her embezzlement of her own company's funds. 

On August 21, it was revealed that prosecutors are seeking a three-year prison sentence for Hwang Jung Eum. During the final trial at Jeju District Court today, the actress was accused of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement) by taking 4.34 billion won (approximately $3.1 million)  in 2022 from Hunminjeongeum Entertainment, a company she solely owns.

The money was reportedly used for two main purposes, 4.2 billion won for cryptocurrency investments, and the remainder for property, local, and credit card payments. 

During her trial, Hwang Jung Eum admitted to all charges and has since repaid the entire amount. She sold personal assets to make restitution in two payments on May 30 and June 5, resolving all financial ties with the company.

Meanwhile, Hwang Jung Eum's sentencing is scheduled for September.

Hwang Jung Eum announced her divorce from her husband, businessman and former professional golfer Lee Young Don, last year. The couple, who married in 2016, had previously separated but reunited. They have two children, born in 2017 and 2022.

Hwang Jung Eum made her debut in 2002 as a member of the girl group Sugar. In 2004, she pursued a solo career and also embarked on acting in 2007. The idol-actress is known for leading the K-dramas The Escape of the Seven: War for Survival, To All the Guys Who Loved Me, She Was Pretty, Kill Me, Heal Me, Endless Love, Secret, and more.

Hwang Jung Eum was last seen in the 2024 K-drama The Escape of the Seven: Resurrection with Uhm Ki Joon, Lee Joon, Lee Yoo Bi, Shin Eun Kyung, Yoon Jong Hoon, and more.
