Kim Se Jeong gives character insights in her role in 'Moon River'

Kim Se Jeong shares comments on her role in the upcoming historical fantasy Moon River.

Moon River tells the story of Crown Prince Lee Kang (Kang Tae Oh), who has lost his smile, and Park Dal Yi (Kim Se Jeong), a merchant who has lost part of her memories, as their souls get swapped, unleashing chaos. 

In the K-drama, Kim Se Jeong plays Park Dal Yi, a merchant who finds her soul switched with that of the crown prince and faces an unexpected twist of fate. 

Talking about her character, Kim said, "The fact that it's a soul-swapping romance drew my interest, and when I learned that my co-star would be actor Kang Tae Oh, my trust and excitement for the story grew even stronger."

This series marks Kim Se Jeong's first role in a historical drama. "From dressing as a man to trying on all sorts of outfits, I felt a bit embarrassed. But deep down, I couldn't help thinking they actually suited me quite well. I think viewers will also find it fun to see me appear in such a variety of disguises."

Furthermore, to perfectly portray Park Dal Yi’s Chungcheong Province dialect, Kim revealed that she stayed in Boryeong for seven days. "I joined in conversations with the elders there, and as I listened and spoke with them, I realized I could make good use of the accent I already had. Though it's not perfect, I hope viewers will see it as part of the character's way of speaking [charm] and find it endearing."

Apart from the dialect and outfits, Kim also needed a deep understanding of Lee Kang (Kang Tae Oh) — the character who switches souls with Park Dal Yi. 

"For the soul swap, Kang Tae Oh and I shared ideas constantly. We even tried reading the script with our roles swapped, and whenever something felt confusing, we discussed it right away to build ideas together. I even studied his habits, way of speaking, and vocalization to try and imitate them."

Finally, Kim Se Jeong expressed her liking to the character, saying, "Park Dal Yi's bright and easygoing personality is very similar to my own." She added, "I think the charm will come from the range between Park Dal Yi's loveliness and Lee Kang's charisma. The title I'd like to earn through this challenge is 'a perfect fit for historical dramas."

Moon River premieres on October 31. The K-drama will be coming on Viki.
