Hi friend, I just asked Deepseek as below:

How Did Su Muyu Hide Eighteen Swords in His Umbrella?

This is one of the most ingenious and fascinating aspects of Su Muyu's martial arts!

His weapon, the "umbrella sword," and the eighteen slender blades hidden within it are highly iconic unique weapons in the series. While the original novel and animation don't provide exact mechanical blueprints, we can reconstruct a plausible explanation based on their descriptions.

The core principle is: It's not just an umbrella, but an exquisitely designed "sword case."

Here is a reasonable breakdown of its mechanism:

1. The Ribs are the Scabbards

  • An ordinary umbrella has ribs made of thin wooden or bamboo strips.

  • In Su Muyu's umbrella, the ribs themselves are hollow. Each rib acts as a miniature "scabbard."

  • Those eighteen slender blades (similar to enlarged flying needles or short swords) are stored within these eighteen specially made hollow ribs when not in use.

2. The Form and Material of the Swords

  • Thin and Light: These eighteen swords do not resemble ordinary long swords. They are described as "slender blades," meaning they are extremely thin and narrow, akin to long sword strips or large acupuncture needles, allowing them to fit inside the ribs.

  • Special Material: To be both strong and incredibly thin, these blades must be forged from some top-grade, highly flexible special metal (e.g., meteorite iron, refined steel).

3. The Mechanism and Trigger

The key lies in the complex internal mechanics within the umbrella. We can speculate:

  • Central Hub: There is a precise core mechanism in the handle and the top of the umbrella.

  • Internal Energy Driven: Su Muyu triggers this core mechanism by channeling his internal energy (Neili) into the umbrella.

  • Ejection and Retrieval:

    • Deploying Swords: The mechanism activates, using springs or similar components to instantly eject the slender blades hidden within the ribs.

    • Control: The ends of the blades are likely connected to nearly invisible, extremely fine yet tough threads (similar to spider silk), which are wound around a mechanism inside the handle. This allows Su Muyu to precisely control each deployed sword using his internal energy, enabling attack, directional changes, and defense, thus forming the powerful "Eighteen Sword Formation."

    • Retracting Swords: By manipulating the threads and the handle mechanism, and utilizing the elasticity of the blades themselves, the swords can be quickly retracted back into the ribs.

Summary:

Think of the umbrella as a "beehive" or "missile silo":

  • The Umbrella Body: Is the launch platform and storage compartment.

  • The Ribs: Are eighteen individual launch tubes.

  • The Slender Blades: Are eighteen precisely guided "projectiles."

  • The Handle Mechanism and Su Muyu's Internal Energy: Are the control center and power source.

Therefore, Su Muyu's ability to hide eighteen swords in his umbrella relies on "exquisitely intricate mechanical design" combined with "specially crafted weapon forms," all driven and controlled by his profound internal energy. This embodies the charm of unique weapons in the martial world, blending craftsmanship, martial arts, and imagination.

Your description of how swords are stored in the umbrella is actually how I always imagined it to be.

You are right about most part but regarding control of swords as long as I remember from novel is bit different. Su Muyu controls swords through thin threads which are wound around his fingers of left hand and hus left hand is controlling all the swords in the umbrella while his right hand is controlling the long sword.

About collecting the swords although I am not sure as I haven't gone through completely novel I just read it superficially but in one scene Su Changhe tells Muyu that his 18 swords array is bothersome because he has to collect his swords later and reload everything, although it might have been misinterpreted in translations.

Thanks for the extra details!
