Maybe the issue on the 1 year separation I am misunderstanding it.

No. If possible no year separation, they keep being friend or keep contact. But if hard separation is OK. Not kind of childhood friend but separated & meet again later in the adult years. Like for examples My Little Happiness, is not the drama for this...

Majority of drama should be set in the past/present and time jump should go to the present/future. No short flashbacks/pre story

Also, it can be series of relatively big time jumps to depict a long period of time, like in biopics
