Recently, I found myself watching a lot but a lot of shows, that looked, like RR (on the synopsis) , felt like RR (in the setting or in the firsts scenes) but end up not being so RR.
In short, a clever or badass FL in the first scenes almost always ends up letting herself be bullied by villains. Which is a demolition of her persona in my opinion.
This is definitely a trend I keep seeing pop up more and more and I'm loathing it. I've seen SO many beautiful RR intros that then get butchered into the same boring tradslop we keep seeing everywhere. That bait-and-switch is atrocious and is my #1 most-hated 'trope' for a reason
FL being an overlord who take some liberties with ML, being handsy with him, forces herself onto him, using aphrodisiac to have intercourse with him but him being reluctand at first then falling for her but still doesn't submit totally with a tsundere demeanor. All that, if I remember correctly.

I rated that vertical dark romance 10/10 because the story in good, complex, visualy beautiful and the dialogues sometimes are just unbelivable to hear in a drama ( FL's sharp tong is lethal hahaha).

I honestly prefer a steady strong FL who doesn't wave, even if she is shaking inside , because it is more satisfying for me, than those supposed RR heroines whose Personas scrumble after a few minutes in.

I had shared this one a few weeks ago cuz it also seemed like it could have some role reversal, but the trailer is giving me mixed feelings... I think it'll end up similarly to Destined, Pursuit of Jade, and The First Jasmine for me, which is, mostly egal with maybe some RR-leaning best-case scenario ๐ญ It really depends a lot on how unpleasant they make ML and how epic and cool and badass they make him when he inevitably recovers from his injury (because of course he will ๐). Not holding my breath for this one.

Not sure what kind of jdramas you're watching but for me it's been a VERY mixed bag ๐ฌ Jdramas are very misogynistic and their FLs are meek to the point of being outright pathetic ๐ญ What Japan DOES do good is more out-there topics like gender nonconforming men and even mpreg, but... role reversal? Yikes...
Thai drama are also more reliable but their is a lake of quality in writing most of the time.
I've only ever seen a very small handful Thai dramas with the illusion of role reversal and all got a 'slightly RR' rating from me. Do you have reccs? I can't find any ๐ญ

I think it might just have had the opposite effect of what it intended, because that lady looks really cool.
She looks SO cool!!! A nice suit, a confident posture, and smoking??? Such a badass!! And the gentleman looks so dainty and proper beside her! I like this!
But so yes this what they imagined/feared women would be like by now. And I mean I guess a lot of women do smoke and wear pants, they did get that part right.

I haven't been in a big movie-watching mood for ages, but I want to attempt this over the long weekend (Monday is a holiday in the states).
The aesthetics reminds me of "Only Lovers Left Alive", another indie vampire fic starring Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton. The soundtrack is one of my favorites! I remember it being egal with RR leanings, but I could be imagining the latter.
Aaah Yue Bang Jiu Xiao looks so good ๐ญ I was hoping for a Forever Love type of show but historical lol, so thank you so much XD excited to give it a watch!!

Okay, so I tried to take into account the character's personality, role, and job while also kinda keeping it within the realm of "if censorship eased like 20% maybe this could air". I also challenged myself to try and find as many male models as I could for โจ realism โจ
This turned out very cute!
The secretary and brother-in-law's outfits would pass censorship with flying colors, so good job! I think you could sneak some of ML's outfits in too, but the CCP would definitely be paying attention to ML's friend ๐ Quite a few of the outfits I chose would land the actors in prison or require bribery, but I was having too much fun so I went overboard with the sluttiness... :( I couldn't help myself even though I was the one who proposed trying to get them past censorship.
ML - Went with a more of a softboy/androgynous style that would get progressively cuter and more fem as the drama unfolds. I feel like he'd be pretty awkward at first and would try to dress as masc as possible, but with like, flair (to fit in, ofc, winkwonk) and then the outfits further down are him embracing his pretty kawaiicore, because idk, he seems like that kinda guy to me ๐
Adorable! I love the blue daisy vest. And idk who you thought you were foolin', but you knew exactly what you were doing with the picture of the rainbow shorts...
ML's bestie - I remember this man being SUCH a diva so I went with that trendy it-girl insta baddie vibes.
The pink shirt and ripped black shorts came up A LOT in my own Pinterest search. I can now identify Earth from the neck down LOL.
FL's secretary/ML's rival - I feel like this is a style that could actually air with relative ease in like a vertical (it's sooo Wu Tianhao-coded, lol. Man's always in a chanel-style jacket). But yeah, preppy, elegant, "I'm better than you"-core, "trynna bag a millionaire"-core.

ML's brother in law - I remember this poor man being overworked asffff, working a job while raising his two daughters (one unfortunately being his wife, LOL), so I kinda went with a more practical/androgynous style that he tries to spice-up with some pretty patterns to still feel like he can still have nice things ๐ฅบ

So, I only watched about two episodes of the drama, so I did my best to recall them while making the ML's board. I barely remember the other characters, so I took fashion cues from you while leaning into, well, slutty. And what I could possibly get away with. I'm pleasantly surprised at some of the "straddling the censorship line" outfits I found that still show something. The makeup's just for fun since I know none of it would pass censorship.

Okay, hear me out. The sleeveless shirt with the deep side slit? I've seen an ML or two wear something similar in dramas while playing basketball. The naked striped black t-shirt? Easy. And I think the officer at the censorship office would only look twice at the navy blue collarbone exposing sweater and partially see-through mesh shorts before stamping a pass. I'd have trouble with the backless sweater (more revealing than the one above) and possibly the crop top.

Where have I been? I like Bollywood and Indian cinema in general, but had no RR media on my radar. The closest I've ever gotten was a kind of egal thriller called Kahaani.
I'm kind of curious about Man's World...why was it scarring?
I mean Man's world is supposed to be dark. It was a time when Indian women were facing alot. That was the rise of working women and they faced alot like harrasment at work place, oppression and all. So this series was a part of like a campaign. It's like basically trying to show people wt women go through but in male perspective.... So it should be dark like that.

Same, it's soooo dry out here in all aspects: full-lengths, minis (now that I'm done Lady Painter and Shadow Sovereign), and especially verticals. I'm still baffled and devastated at this shift because the beginning of the year was so good!
Anyway, Alix E. Harrow is definitely one of us! Her couples are so thoroughly RR, and she's a fantastic writer! "The Everlasting" is slow-going because I don't want to read it when I have mental fog, but I'm enjoying it nevertheless.

I have never even heard of a real Thai RR ๐ฎ Can you recommend some? Their actors are beautiful, but whenever I try to watch their dramas, the ML is always in control and the FL is always very whiny, or appears strong but isn't actually strong.
